Love Thy Neighbors: Image Annotation by Exploiting Image Metadata
Some images that are difficult to recognize on their own may become more
clear in the context of a neighborhood of related images with similar
social-network metadata. We build on this intuition to improve multilabel image
annotation. Our model uses image metadata nonparametrically to generate
neighborhoods of related images using Jaccard similarities, then uses a deep
neural network to blend visual information from the image and its neighbors.
Prior work typically models image metadata parametrically, in contrast, our
nonparametric treatment allows our model to perform well even when the
vocabulary of metadata changes between training and testing. We perform
comprehensive experiments on the NUS-WIDE dataset, where we show that our model
outperforms state-of-the-art methods for multilabel image annotation even when
our model is forced to generalize to new types of metadata.Comment: Accepted to ICCV 201
Assessment of algorithms for mitosis detection in breast cancer histopathology images
The proliferative activity of breast tumors, which is routinely estimated by counting of mitotic figures in hematoxylin and eosin stained histology sections, is considered to be one of the most important prognostic markers. However, mitosis counting is laborious, subjective and may suffer from low inter-observer agreement. With the wider acceptance of whole slide images in pathology labs, automatic image analysis has been proposed as a potential solution for these issues.
In this paper, the results from the Assessment of Mitosis Detection Algorithms 2013 (AMIDA13) challenge are described. The challenge was based on a data set consisting of 12 training and 11 testing subjects, with more than one thousand annotated mitotic figures by multiple observers. Short descriptions and results from the evaluation of eleven methods are presented. The top performing method has an error rate that is comparable to the inter-observer agreement among pathologists
Content-Based Video Retrieval in Historical Collections of the German Broadcasting Archive
The German Broadcasting Archive (DRA) maintains the cultural heritage of
radio and television broadcasts of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR).
The uniqueness and importance of the video material stimulates a large
scientific interest in the video content. In this paper, we present an
automatic video analysis and retrieval system for searching in historical
collections of GDR television recordings. It consists of video analysis
algorithms for shot boundary detection, concept classification, person
recognition, text recognition and similarity search. The performance of the
system is evaluated from a technical and an archival perspective on 2,500 hours
