Cutting out the middleman: measuring nuclear area in histopathology slides without segmentation

The size of nuclei in histological preparations from excised breast tumors is predictive of patient outcome (large nuclei indicate poor outcome). Pathologists take into account nuclear size when performing breast cancer grading. In addition, the mean nuclear area (MNA) has been shown to have independent prognostic value. The straightforward approach to measuring nuclear size is by performing nuclei segmentation. We hypothesize that given an image of a tumor region with known nuclei locations, the area of the individual nuclei and region statistics such as the MNA can be reliably computed directly from the image data by employing a machine learning model, without the intermediate step of nuclei segmentation. Towards this goal, we train a deep convolutional neural network model that is applied locally at each nucleus location, and can reliably measure the area of the individual nuclei and the MNA. Furthermore, we show how such an approach can be extended to perform combined nuclei detection and measurement, which is reminiscent of granulometry.Comment: Conditionally accepted for MICCAI 201

Sacred Basket: Reflections on Facilitating Black Women’s Self-Love Retreats

When the U.S. seemed to disintegrate in 2020 from the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing murders of unarmed Black people by the police, my fear levels rose dramatically, and understandably so. Like other Black women, I experienced intersectional oppressions including, but not limited to, racism and sexism. I needed to shore up my inner strength. In this essay I discuss online retreats that I have been facilitating for Black women since September 2020. I describe my approach to the retreats, how participants have responded to them, and the community that has developed through them. The retreats are healing spaces that offer Black women contemplative themes and practices to explore in community. And through contemplative practices, the retreats increase Black women’s self-love, which helps dismantle their internalized oppression by offering them more accurate—and beautiful—images of self. These images shift their inner experience, which then shifts their external experiences

If the Beautiful See Themselves, They Will Love Themselves: Contemplative Practice and Cultural Healing

This essay, originally delivered as the 2nd annual Arthur Zajonc Lecture on Contemplative Education during CMind’s 2018 Contemplative Pedagogy Seminar, emphasizes the importance of works by black women artists in, and beyond, the context of the American black liberation struggle. Through discussions of the work of Dianne McIntyre, Alice Coltrane, Alice Walker, and Minnie Evans, the author demonstrates how the contemplative practices of creative expression are a means of growth and learning, helping all people to see their own beauty, connect with the Divine within, and thrive

How I Got Over: A Study of the Tenure Experiences of Black Female Professors at Predominantly White Institutions

    Get PDF
This study explored the tenure experiences of seven Black female professors as they pursued tenure at select public higher/highest research activity predominantly white institutions. This study was pursued in an attempt to determine what challenges were presented during the tenure process. More importantly, this study sought to determine the role of mentorship in the pursuit of tenure. In addition, recommendations for success were offered to Black females who are currently pursuing tenure or who may choose to enter the academy. A narrative research study was utilized for this study which was informed by Black Feminist Thought. This allowed for a look into the experiences of Black female faculty at PWIs. Interviews were conducted with seven tenured Black female professors in spring 2017 at public, higher/highest research activity predominantly white institutions in the Midwestern and Southern states of the U.S. Interviews included 5 associate professors and 2 full professors. Participants talked about their experiences during open-ended semi-structured interviews. Evidence is presented on how the tenure and promotion process was viewed by each participant. The three research questions addressed in the study are: (1) What are the experiences of Black female professors at select public higher/highest research activity predominantly white institutions as they pursued tenure? (2) What recommendations would they offer to other Black female professors at public higher/highest research activity predominantly white institutions pursuing a career in academia? (3) What role has mentorship played in their experiences in academia

The Efficiency of Bilingual Children in Understanding Analogies in the English Language

It is felt that the bilingual population in the southwest is of significantly large enough proportions to warrant specialized emphasis on its education problems. These children need to become better comprehensive readers, not merely word-callers. Teachers frequently assume that if their pupils recognize the words of selection, comprehension is assured. Unfortunately, this is not true in many instances. There are many aspects of English language which might cause bilingual children some difficulty. A few of these might be the analogy, synonym, homonym, multiple meaning, antonym, and the idiomatic expression. This study is designed to reveal the extent which bilingual children have difficulty in understanding analogies in the English language. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficiency of Indian and Spanish speaking children in understanding analogies in the English language. The procedure followed was: (1) to prepare to elementary tests of analogies of equal difficulty which were found in standard reading texts up to and including fourth grade reader level; (2) to administer these analogy tests to a selected sample of fourth grade children in the Albuquerque Public Schools to establish norms for comparison; (3) to compare the performance of fourth and sixth grade Indian and Spanish-American children in selected schools in New Mexico; (4) to determine the extent to which Indian and Spanish-American children as bilingual groups do not understand analogies in the English language; (5) to formulate recommendations for teaching of reading in the elementary school based on the performance of bilingual children

Exploring the similarity of medical imaging classification problems

Supervised learning is ubiquitous in medical image analysis. In this paper we consider the problem of meta-learning -- predicting which methods will perform well in an unseen classification problem, given previous experience with other classification problems. We investigate the first step of such an approach: how to quantify the similarity of different classification problems. We characterize datasets sampled from six classification problems by performance ranks of simple classifiers, and define the similarity by the inverse of Euclidean distance in this meta-feature space. We visualize the similarities in a 2D space, where meaningful clusters start to emerge, and show that the proposed representation can be used to classify datasets according to their origin with 89.3\% accuracy. These findings, together with the observations of recent trends in machine learning, suggest that meta-learning could be a valuable tool for the medical imaging community

Domain-adversarial neural networks to address the appearance variability of histopathology images

Preparing and scanning histopathology slides consists of several steps, each with a multitude of parameters. The parameters can vary between pathology labs and within the same lab over time, resulting in significant variability of the tissue appearance that hampers the generalization of automatic image analysis methods. Typically, this is addressed with ad-hoc approaches such as staining normalization that aim to reduce the appearance variability. In this paper, we propose a systematic solution based on domain-adversarial neural networks. We hypothesize that removing the domain information from the model representation leads to better generalization. We tested our hypothesis for the problem of mitosis detection in breast cancer histopathology images and made a comparative analysis with two other approaches. We show that combining color augmentation with domain-adversarial training is a better alternative than standard approaches to improve the generalization of deep learning methods.Comment: MICCAI 2017 Workshop on Deep Learning in Medical Image Analysi
