    Human-Agent Decision-making: Combining Theory and Practice

    Extensive work has been conducted both in game theory and logic to model strategic interaction. An important question is whether we can use these theories to design agents for interacting with people? On the one hand, they provide a formal design specification for agent strategies. On the other hand, people do not necessarily adhere to playing in accordance with these strategies, and their behavior is affected by a multitude of social and psychological factors. In this paper we will consider the question of whether strategies implied by theories of strategic behavior can be used by automated agents that interact proficiently with people. We will focus on automated agents that we built that need to interact with people in two negotiation settings: bargaining and deliberation. For bargaining we will study game-theory based equilibrium agents and for argumentation we will discuss logic-based argumentation theory.     An improved multi-agent simulation methodology for modelling and evaluating wireless communication systems resource allocation algorithms

    Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) constitute a well known approach in modelling dynamical real world systems. Recently, this technology has been applied to Wireless Communication Systems (WCS), where efficient resource allocation is a primary goal, for modelling the physical entities involved, like Base Stations (BS), service providers and network operators. This paper presents a novel approach in applying MAS methodology to WCS resource allocation by modelling more abstract entities involved in WCS operation, and especially the concurrent network procedures (services). Due to the concurrent nature of a WCS, MAS technology presents a suitable modelling solution. Services such as new call admission, handoff, user movement and call termination are independent to one another and may occur at the same time for many different users in the network. Thus, the required network procedures for supporting the above services act autonomously, interact with the network environment (gather information such as interference conditions), take decisions (e.g. call establishment), etc, and can be modelled as agents. Based on this novel simulation approach, the agent cooperation in terms of negotiation and agreement becomes a critical issue. To this end, two negotiation strategies are presented and evaluated in this research effort and among them the distributed negotiation and communication scheme between network agents is presented to be highly efficient in terms of network performance.     An LSPI based reinforcement learning approach to enable network cooperation in cognitive wireless sensor networks

    The number of wirelessly communicating devices increases every day, along with the number of communication standards and technologies that they use to exchange data. A relatively new form of research is trying to find a way to make all these co-located devices not only capable of detecting each other's presence, but to go one step further - to make them cooperate. One recently proposed way to tackle this problem is to engage into cooperation by activating 'network services' (such as internet sharing, interference avoidance, etc.) that offer benefits for other co-located networks. This approach reduces the problem to the following research topic: how to determine which network services would be beneficial for all the cooperating networks. In this paper we analyze and propose a conceptual solution for this problem using the reinforcement learning technique known as the Least Square Policy Iteration (LSPI). The proposes solution uses a self-learning entity that negotiates between different independent and co-located networks. First, the reasoning entity uses self-learning techniques to determine which service configuration should be used to optimize the network performance of each single network. Afterwards, this performance is used as a reference point and LSPI is used to deduce if cooperating with other co-located networks can lead to even further performance improvements

    This chapter considers the social component of interactive information retrieval: what is the role of other people in searching and browsing? For simplicity we begin by considering situations without computers. After all, you can interactively retrieve information without a computer; you just have to interact with someone or something else. Such an analysis can then help us think about the new forms of collaborative interactions that extend our conceptions of information search, made possible by the growth of networked ubiquitous computing technology. Information searching and browsing have often been conceptualized as a solitary activity, however they always have a social component. We may talk about 'the' searcher or 'the' user of a database or information resource. Our focus may be on individual uses and our research may look at individual users. Our experiments may be designed to observe the behaviors of individual subjects. Our models and theories derived from our empirical analyses may focus substantially or exclusively on an individual's evolving goals, thoughts, beliefs, emotions and actions. Nevertheless there are always social aspects of information seeking and use present, both implicitly and explicitly. We start by summarizing some of the history of information access with an emphasis on social and collaborative interactions. Then we look at the nature of recommendations, social search and interfaces to support collaboration between information seekers. Following this we consider how the design of interactive information systems is influenced by their social elements
