    Exploiting multimedia in creating and analysing multimedia Web archives

    The data contained on the web and the social web are inherently multimedia and consist of a mixture of textual, visual and audio modalities. Community memories embodied on the web and social web contain a rich mixture of data from these modalities. In many ways, the web is the greatest resource ever created by human-kind. However, due to the dynamic and distributed nature of the web, its content changes, appears and disappears on a daily basis. Web archiving provides a way of capturing snapshots of (parts of) the web for preservation and future analysis. This paper provides an overview of techniques we have developed within the context of the EU funded ARCOMEM (ARchiving COmmunity MEMories) project to allow multimedia web content to be leveraged during the archival process and for post-archival analysis. Through a set of use cases, we explore several practical applications of multimedia analytics within the realm of web archiving, web archive analysis and multimedia data on the web in general

    Composing Measures for Computing Text Similarity

    We present a comprehensive study of computing similarity between texts. We start from the observation that while the concept of similarity is well grounded in psychology, text similarity is much less well-defined in the natural language processing community. We thus define the notion of text similarity and distinguish it from related tasks such as textual entailment and near-duplicate detection. We then identify multiple text dimensions, i.e. characteristics inherent to texts that can be used to judge text similarity, for which we provide empirical evidence. We discuss state-of-the-art text similarity measures previously proposed in the literature, before continuing with a thorough discussion of common evaluation metrics and datasets. Based on the analysis, we devise an architecture which combines text similarity measures in a unified classification framework. We apply our system in two evaluation settings, for which it consistently outperforms prior work and competing systems: (a) an intrinsic evaluation in the context of the Semantic Textual Similarity Task as part of the Semantic Evaluation (SemEval) exercises, and (b) an extrinsic evaluation for the detection of text reuse. As a basis for future work, we introduce DKPro Similarity, an open source software package which streamlines the development of text similarity measures and complete experimental setups

    SILA: a system for scientific image analysis

    A great deal of the images found in scientific publications are retouched, reused, or composed to enhance the quality of the presentation. In most instances, these edits are benign and help the reader better understand the material in a paper. However, some edits are instances of scientific misconduct and undermine the integrity of the presented research. Determining the legitimacy of edits made to scientific images is an open problem that no current technology can perform satisfactorily in a fully automated fashion. It thus remains up to human experts to inspect images as part of the peer-review process. Nonetheless, image analysis technologies promise to become helpful to experts to perform such an essential yet arduous task. Therefore, we introduce SILA, a system that makes image analysis tools available to reviewers and editors in a principled way. Further, SILA is the first human-in-the-loop end-to-end system that starts by processing article PDF files, performs image manipulation detection on the automatically extracted figures, and ends with image provenance graphs expressing the relationships between the images in question, to explain potential problems. To assess its efficacy, we introduce a dataset of scientific papers from around the globe containing annotated image manipulations and inadvertent reuse, which can serve as a benchmark for the problem at hand.     Text mining, also known as Intelligent Text Analysis is an important research area. It is very difficult to focus on the most appropriate information due to the high dimensionality of data. Feature Extraction is one of the important techniques in data reduction to discover the most important features. Proce- ssing massive amount of data stored in a unstructured form is a challenging task. Several pre-processing methods and algo- rithms are needed to extract useful features from huge amount of data. The survey covers different text summarization, classi- fication, clustering methods to discover useful features and also discovering query facets which are multiple groups of words or phrases that explain and summarize the content covered by a query thereby reducing time taken by the user. Dealing with collection of text documents, it is also very important to filter out duplicate data. Once duplicates are deleted, it is recommended to replace the removed duplicates. Hence we also review the literature on duplicate detection and data fusion (remove and replace duplicates).The survey provides existing text mining techniques to extract relevant features, detect duplicates and to replace the duplicate data to get fine grained knowledge to the user

    Image-based Social Sensing: Combining AI and the Crowd to Mine Policy-Adherence Indicators from Twitter

    Social Media provides a trove of information that, if aggregated and analysed appropriately can provide important statistical indicators to policy makers. In some situations these indicators are not available through other mechanisms. For example, given the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, it is essential for governments to have access to reliable data on policy-adherence with regards to mask wearing, social distancing, and other hard-to-measure quantities. In this paper we investigate whether it is possible to obtain such data by aggregating information from images posted to social media. The paper presents VisualCit, a pipeline for image-based social sensing combining recent advances in image recognition technology with geocoding and crowdsourcing techniques. Our aim is to discover in which countries, and to what extent, people are following COVID-19 related policy directives. We compared the results with the indicators produced within the CovidDataHub behavior tracker initiative.     Historical collaborative geocoding

    The latest developments in digital have provided large data sets that can increasingly easily be accessed and used. These data sets often contain indirect localisation information, such as historical addresses. Historical geocoding is the process of transforming the indirect localisation information to direct localisation that can be placed on a map, which enables spatial analysis and cross-referencing. Many efficient geocoders exist for current addresses, but they do not deal with the temporal aspect and are based on a strict hierarchy (..., city, street, house number) that is hard or impossible to use with historical data. Indeed historical data are full of uncertainties (temporal aspect, semantic aspect, spatial precision, confidence in historical source, ...) that can not be resolved, as there is no way to go back in time to check. We propose an open source, open data, extensible solution for geocoding that is based on the building of gazetteers composed of geohistorical objects extracted from historical topographical maps. Once the gazetteers are available, geocoding an historical address is a matter of finding the geohistorical object in the gazetteers that is the best match to the historical address. The matching criteriae are customisable and include several dimensions (fuzzy semantic, fuzzy temporal, scale, spatial precision ...). As the goal is to facilitate historical work, we also propose web-based user interfaces that help geocode (one address or batch mode) and display over current or historical topographical maps, so that they can be checked and collaboratively edited. The system is tested on Paris city for the 19-20th centuries, shows high returns rate and is fast enough to be used interactively.Comment: WORKING PAPE
