Molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics analysis of Drexler-Merkle gears and neon pump
Over the past two years at the Materials and Process Simulation Center, we have been developing simulation approaches for studying the molecular nanomachine designs pioneered by Drexler and Merkle. These nanomachine designs, such as planetary gears and neon pump, are described with atomistic details and involve up to 10 000 atoms.
With the Dreiding and universal force fields, we have optimized the structures of the two planetary gear designs and the neon pump. At the Fourth Foresight conference, we reported rotational impulse dynamics studies of the first and second generation designs of planetary gears undergoing very high-frequency rotational motions. We will explore stability of these designs in the lower frequency regimes which require long time simulations. We will report the molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics simulations performed on these model systems. We explore the following modes in these studies: (1) impulse mode; (2) constant angular velocity - perpetual rotation; (3) constant torque - acceleration from rest
Nanotechnology: radical new science or plus ça change?
Is a radical nanotechnology involving the construction of macroscopic products via software-directed manipulation of single molecules possible? Are we only a few decades
away from a technological utopia where virtually any product may be constructed via molecular manufacturing? These and other similarly provocative questions formed the
backdrop for a well-attended debate on nanotechnology held in the University of Nottingham last year (26 August 2005)
The eminent need for an academic program in universities to teach nanomedicine
Nanomedicine is on the cutting edge of technology applied to medical and biological sciences. Nanodevices, nanomaterials, nanoinstruments, nanotechnologies, and nanotechniques (laboratory methods and procedures) are important for the modern practice of medicine and essential for research that could stimulate the discovery of new medical advances. Accordingly, there is an eminent need for implementing an academic program in universities to teach this indispensable and pragmatic discipline, especially in the departments of graduate studies and research in the areas of pharmacology, genetic engineering, proteomics, and molecular and cellular biology
Molecular Motor of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotube Driven by Temperature Variation
An elegant formula for coordinates of carbon atoms in a unit cell of a
single-walled nanotube (SWNT) is presented and a new molecular motor of
double-walled carbon nanotube whose inner tube is a long (8,4) SWNT and outer
tube a short (14,8) SWNT is constructed. The interaction between inner an outer
tubes is analytically derived by summing the Lennard-Jones potentials between
atoms in inner and outer tubes. It is proved that the molecular motor in a
thermal bath exhibits a directional motion with the temperature variation of
the bath.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, revtex
Nanotechnology: Interdisciplinary science of applications
Nanotechnology is the study of particle sizes between 1 and 100 nanometers at least at one dimension. Particle size reduced to nanometer length scale exhibit more surface area to volume size ratio and showing unusual properties makes them enable for systematic applications in engineering, biomedical, agricultural and allied sectors. Nanomaterial can create from bottom up or top down approaches using physical, chemical and biological mode of synthesis. Keywords: Nanotechnology, nanomaterial, nanobiotechnology, nanotech-applicationsAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(3), pp. 219-22
