    EAD - enabling armchair delivery : approaches to encoding finding aids at the University of Liverpool

    EAD is increasingly being selected as the primary data format for constructing archival finding aids in the British Archive Community as the new technologies and know-how required to encode lists are being embraced in many repositories. One major problem facing archivists, though, is how to convert finding aids held in a variety of formats (including databases, word processed documents and paper lists with no machine readable form) into EAD. This article will discuss the methods used in Special Collections and Archives at the University of Liverpool Library in converting finding aids into EAD. Two main examples will be discussed: firstly, designing database output styles which automatically generate EAD tags to wrap around database fields using the ProCite bibliographic database and secondly, offshore keying of paper lists with the addition of basic EAD tags following a rigorous template designed by Special Collections and Archives staff. Both methods have proved effective and have facilitated the generation of EAD encoded lists for a number of our largest collections. Finally, there will be a brief discussion of our use of native EAD generation using AdeptEdit software and our continuing use of conversion methods

    Designing multilingual information access to Tate Online

    The Tate is Britain's premier national art gallery and includes content from internationally-renowned artists such as Constable and Turner. Like most cultural heritage institutions, the Tate provides online access to a large amount of digitized material. Given the international importance of content provided by the Tate Gallery, multilingual access would seem an ideal way in which to increase accessibility to the collections, and thereby increase traffic to the website. In this short paper we propose using the Tate as a case study for cross-language research and evaluation, determining the gallery’s requirements and the multilingual needs of their end-users

    A strategic approach to making sense of the “wicked” problem of ERM

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an approach to viewing the “wicked” problem of electronic records management (ERM), using the Cynefin framework, a sense-making tool. It re-conceptualises the ERM challenge by understanding the nature of the people issues. This supports decision making about the most appropriate tactics to adopt to effect positive change. Design/methodology/approach – Cynefin was used to synthesise qualitative data from an empirical research project that investigated strategies and tactics for improving ERM. Findings – ERM may be thought of as a dynamic, complex challenge but, viewed through the Cynefin framework, many issues are not complex; they are simple or complicated and can be addressed using best or good practice. The truly complex issues need a different approach, described as emergent practice. Cynefin provides a different lens through which to view, make sense of and re-perceive the ERM challenge and offers a strategic approach to accelerating change. Research limitations/implications – Since Cynefin has been applied to one data set, the findings are transferrable not generalisable. They, and/or the approach, can be used to further test the propositions. Practical implications – The resultant ERM framework provides a practical example for information and records managers to exploit or use as a starting point to explore the situation in particular organisational contexts. It could also be used in other practical, teaching and/or research-related records contexts. Originality/value – This paper provides a new strategic approach to addressing the wicked problem of ERM, which is applicable for any organisational context

    Characteristics of pervasive learning environments in museum contexts

    There is no appropriate learning model for pervasive learning environments (PLEs), and museums maintain authenticity at the cost of unmarked information. To address these problems, we present the LieksaMyst PLE developed for Pielinen Museum and we derive a set of characteristics that an effective PLE should meet and which form the basis of a new learning model currently under development. We discuss how the characteristics are addressed in LieksaMyst and present an evaluation of the game component of LieksaMyst. Results indicate that, while some usability issues remain to be resolved, the game was received well by the participants enabling them to immerse themselves in the story and to interact effectively with its virtual characters

    Multimedia retrieval in MultiMatch: The impact of speech transcript errors on search behaviour

    This study discusses the findings of an evaluation study on the performance of a multimedia multimodal information access sub-system (MIAS), incorporating automatic speech recognition technology (ASR) to automatically transcribe the speech content of video soundtracks. The study’s results indicate that an information-rich but minimalist graphical interface is preferred. It was also discovered that users tend to have a misplaced confidence in the accuracy of ASR-generated speech transcripts, thus they are not inclined to conduct a systematic auditory inspection (their usual search behaviour) of a video’s soundtrack if the query term does not appear in the transcript. In order to alert the user to the possibility that a search term may be incorrectly recognised as some other word, a matching algorithm is proposed that searches for word sequences of similar phonemic structure to the query term

    Story Sharing – Model of Collective Collaboration in Online Museum Environment

    The need for a more pronounced role of museums in today’s democratic and heterogeneous society has led to a change of the institutional framework which have now come to include voices of all those who have been underrepresented in museums. The new museum needs to pluralize the range of possible meanings by accepting views and interpretation not only of curators but museums users as well. However, museums have been reluctant to adopt new approaches in their work. The paper therefore suggests a more acceptable, on-line model which allows for multivocal interpretations of museum material by connecting the museum data base and web 2.0 applications. The usual repository of actions facilitated by on-line social networks is mostly reserved for web sites outside the direct museum’s digital realm. Conversely, the web service presented in this paper supports participative activities on the very museum web site by allowing users to engage with museums’ collection. The collection in the form of a digital catalogue can thus serve either as a source or inspiration for individual interpretation. Both choosing museum objects from the on-line catalogue and publishing extra-museum material in different media in order to contextualize the object and create stories builds a two- way communication between curators and actively participating users which is presented to all other types of online users. User-generated content is here seen as a possible influence on the actual institutional policies, namely, collecting, research, exhibiting practices, giving relevance to certain topics etc. By allowing active participation in the creation of meaning, de-authorizing the museum, and at the same time creating a massive depository of heritage information, this model contributes to the paradigmatic shift that has been indicated in the museum world in the last ten years
