    Extraction Landscape Elements from Remote Sensing Data

    V této práci je popsán postup pro automatickou detekci krajinných prvků z dat pořízených bezkontaktními dálkovými metodami. Tato interpretace dat byla provedena v softwaru eCognition Developer prostřednictvím procesu klasifikace. Pro klasifikaci byla využita matoda obektově orientované analýzy, která dělí data takovým způsobem, že přiřazuje informaci o příslušnosti k nějaké třídě, například krajinnému typu, skupinám pixelů - objektům. Klasifikace byla provedena se současným využitím produktů dvou různých mapovacích technik - ortofot pořízených z leteckého snímkování a normalizovaného digitálního modelu povrchu, který byl určen pomocí LiDARU. Bylo identifikováno a klasikováno pět typů krajinných prvků.In this thesis, an approach to automatically derive information about land cover from the remotely sensed data is presented. The data interpretation was done with classification process and performed in software eCognition Developer. The Object-based image analysis, which assignes the classes - for example land cover types, to clusters of pixels (=objects), was used. For the classification, products of two different data sources were combined - the orthophotos generated from aerial imagery and Normalized Digital surface model derived from LiDAR data. Five types of landscape elements were identified and classified.

    Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition Methods for Remote Sensing Image Registration and Fusion

    In the last decade, the remote sensing world has dramatically evolved. New types of sensor, each one collecting data with possibly different modalities, have been designed, developed, and deployed. Moreover, new missions have been planned and launched, aimed not only at collecting data of the Earth's surface, but also at acquiring planetary data in support of the study of the whole Solar system. Indeed, such a variety of technologies highlights the need for automatic methods able to effectively exploit all the available information. In the last years, lot of effort has been put in the design and development of advanced data fusion methods able to extract and make use of all the information available from as many complementary information sources as possible. Indeed, the goal of this thesis is to present novel machine learning and pattern recognition methodologies designed to support the exploitation of diverse sources of information, such as multisensor, multimodal, or multiresolution imagery. In this context, image registration plays a major role as is allows bringing two or more digital images into precise alignment for analysis and comparison. Here, image registration is tackled using both feature-based and area-based strategies. In the former case, the features of interest are extracted using a stochastic geometry model based on marked point processes, while, in the latter case, information theoretic functionals and the domain adaptation capabilities of generative adversarial networks are exploited. In addition, multisensor image registration is also applied in a large scale scenario by introducing a tiling-based strategy aimed at minimizing the computational burden, which is usually heavy in the multisensor case due to the need for information theoretic similarity measures. Moreover, automatic change detection with multiresolution and multimodality imagery is addressed via a novel Markovian framework based on a linear mixture model and on an ad-hoc multimodal energy function minimized using graph cuts or belied propagation methods. The statistics of the data at the various spatial scales is modelled through appropriate generalized Gaussian distributions and by iteratively estimating a set of virtual images, at the finest resolution, representing the data that would have been collected in case all the sensors worked at that resolution. All such methodologies have been experimentally evaluated with respect to different datasets, and with particular focus on the trade-off between the achievable performances and the demands in terms of computational resources. Moreover, such methods are also compared with state-of-the-art solutions, and are analyzed in terms of future developments, giving insights to possible future lines of research in this field

    An improved algorithm for identifying shallow and deep-seated landslides in dense tropical forest from airborne laser scanning data

    © 2018 Landslides are natural disasters that cause environmental and infrastructure damage worldwide. They are difficult to be recognized, particularly in densely vegetated regions of the tropical forest areas. Consequently, an accurate inventory map is required to analyze landslides susceptibility, hazard, and risk. Several studies were done to differentiate between different types of landslide (i.e. shallow and deep-seated); however, none of them utilized any feature selection techniques. Thus, in this study, three feature selection techniques were used (i.e. correlation-based feature selection (CFS), random forest (RF), and ant colony optimization (ACO)). A fuzzy-based segmentation parameter (FbSP optimizer) was used to optimize the segmentation parameters. Random forest (RF) was used to evaluate the performance of each feature selection algorithms. The overall accuracies of the RF classifier revealed that CFS algorithm exhibited higher ranks in differentiation landslide types. Moreover, the results of the transferability showed that this method is easy, accurate, and highly suitable for differentiating between types of landslides (shallow and deep-seated). In summary, the study recommends that the outlined approaches are significant to improve in distinguishing between shallow and deep-seated landslide in the tropical areas, such as; Malaysia

This paper describes the imagc exploitation system developed at the Aeronautical Dcvclopment Establishment, Bangalore, for the remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) Nishonr and highlights two major areas (i) In-flight imagc exploitation, and (ii) post-flight imagc cxploitatlon. In-flight imagc study includes real-timeenhancement of images frames during RPV flight. target acquisition. calculation of geo-location of targets, distance and area computation, and image-to-map correspondence. Post-flight image exploitation study includes image restoration, classtfication of terrain, 3-D depth computation using stereo vision and shape from shading techniques. The paper shows results obtained in each of these areas from actual flight trials

    Improving landslide detection from airborne laser scanning data using optimized Dempster-Shafer

    © 2018 by the authors. A detailed and state-of-the-art landslide inventory map including precise landslide location is greatly required for landslide susceptibility, hazard, and risk assessments. Traditional techniques employed for landslide detection in tropical regions include field surveys, synthetic aperture radar techniques, and optical remote sensing. However, these techniques are time consuming and costly. Furthermore, complications arise for the generation of accurate landslide location maps in these regions due to dense vegetation in tropical forests. Given its ability to penetrate vegetation cover, high-resolution airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is typically employed to generate accurate landslide maps. The object-based technique generally consists of many homogeneous pixels grouped together in a meaningful way through image segmentation. In this paper, in order to address the limitations of this approach, the final decision is executed using Dempster-Shafer theory (DST) rule combination based on probabilistic output from object-based support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) classifiers. Therefore, this research proposes an efficient framework by combining three object-based classifiers using the DST method. Consequently, an existing supervised approach (i.e., fuzzy-based segmentation parameter optimizer) was adopted to optimize multiresolution segmentation parameters such as scale, shape, and compactness. Subsequently, a correlation-based feature selection (CFS) algorithm was employed to select the relevant features. Two study sites were selected to implement the method of landslide detection and evaluation of the proposed method (subset "A" for implementation and subset "B" for the transferrable). The DST method performed well in detecting landslide locations in tropical regions such as Malaysia, with potential applications in other similarly vegetated regions

    Disaster debris estimation using high-resolution polarimetric stereo-SAR

    AbstractThis paper addresses the problem of debris estimation which is one of the most important initial challenges in the wake of a disaster like the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Reasonable estimates of the debris have to be made available to decision makers as quickly as possible. Current approaches to obtain this information are far from being optimal as they usually rely on manual interpretation of optical imagery. We have developed a novel approach for the estimation of tsunami debris pile heights and volumes for improved emergency response. The method is based on a stereo-synthetic aperture radar (stereo-SAR) approach for very high-resolution polarimetric SAR. An advanced gradient-based optical-flow estimation technique is applied for optimal image coregistration of the low-coherence non-interferometric data resulting from the illumination from opposite directions and in different polarizations. By applying model based decomposition of the coherency matrix, only the odd bounce scattering contributions are used to optimize echo time computation. The method exclusively considers the relative height differences from the top of the piles to their base to achieve a very fine resolution in height estimation. To define the base, a reference point on non-debris-covered ground surface is located adjacent to the debris pile targets by exploiting the polarimetric scattering information. The proposed technique is validated using in situ data of real tsunami debris taken on a temporary debris management site in the tsunami affected area near Sendai city, Japan. The estimated height error is smaller than 0.6m RMSE. The good quality of derived pile heights allows for a voxel-based estimation of debris volumes with a RMSE of 1099m3. Advantages of the proposed method are fast computation time, and robust height and volume estimation of debris piles without the need for pre-event data or auxiliary information like DEM, topographic maps or GCPs

    Constant False Alarm Rate Target Detection in Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery

    Target detection plays a significant role in many synthetic aperture radar (SAR) applications, ranging from surveillance of military tanks and enemy territories to crop monitoring in agricultural uses. Detection of targets faces two major problems namely, first, how to remotely acquire high resolution images of targets, second, how to efficiently extract information regarding features of clutter-embedded targets. The first problem is addressed by the use of high penetration radar like synthetic aperture radar. The second problem is tackled by efficient algorithms for accurate and fast detection. So far, there are many methods of target detection for SAR imagery available such as CFAR, generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) method, multiscale autoregressive method, wavelet transform based method etc. The CFAR method has been extensively used because of its attractive features like simple computation and fast detection of targets. The CFAR algorithm incorporates precise statistical description of background clutter which determines how accurately target detection is achieved. The primary goal of this project is to investigate the statistical distribution of SAR background clutter from homogeneous and heterogeneous ground areas and analyze suitability of statistical distributions mathematically modelled for SAR clutter. The threshold has to be accurately computed based on statistical distribution so as to efficiently distinguish target from SAR clutter. Several distributions such as lognormal, Weibull, K, KK, G0, generalized Gamma (GGD) distributions are considered for clutter amplitude modeling in SAR images. The CFAR detection algorithm based on appropriate background clutter distribution is applied to moving and stationary target acquisition and recognition (MSTAR) images. The experimental results show that, CFAR detector based on GGD outmatches CFAR detectors based on lognormal, Weibull, K, KK, G0 distributions in terms of accuracy and computation time.
