Improvement of schedulability bound by task splitting in partitioning scheduling
International audienceWe focus on the class of static-priority partitioning scheduling algorithm on multiprocessor. We are interested in improving the schedulability of these algorithms by splitting the tasks which cannot be successfully allocated on processors
Rate-monotonic scheduling on uniform multiprocessors
Each processor in a uniform multiprocessor machine is characterized by a speed or computing capacity, with the interpretation that a job executing on a processor with speed s for t time units completes (s×t) units of execution. The scheduling of systems of periodic tasks on uniform multiprocessor platforms using the rate-monotonic scheduling algorithm is considered here. A simple, sufficient test is presented for determining whether a given periodic task system will be successfully scheduled by algorithm upon a particular uniform multiprocessor platform — this test generalizes earlier results concerning rate-monotonic scheduling upon identical multiprocessor platforms
Scheduling Mandatory-Optional Real-Time Tasks in Homogeneous Multi-Core Systems with Energy Constraints Using Bio-Inspired Meta-Heuristics
In this paper we present meta-heuristics to solve the energy aware reward based scheduling of real-time tasks with mandatory and optional parts in homogeneous multi-core processors. The problem is NP-Hard. An objective function to maximize the performance of the system considering the execution of optional parts, the benefits of slowing down the processor and a penalty for changing the operation power-mode is introduced together with a set of constraints that guarantee the real-time performance of the system. The meta-heuristics are the bio-inspired methods Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm. Experiments are made to evaluate the proposed algorithms using a set of synthetic systems of tasks. As these have been used previously with an Integer Lineal Programming approach, the results are compared and show that the solutions obtained with bio-inspired methods are within the Pareto frontier and obtained in less time. Finally, precedence related tasks systems are analyzed and the meta-heuristics proposed are extended to solve also this kind of systems. The evaluation is made by solving a traditional example of the real-time precedence related tasks systems on multiprocessors. The solutions obtained through the methods proposed in this paper are good and show that the methods are competitive. In all cases, the solutions are similar to the ones provided by other methods but obtained in less time and with fewer iterations.Fil: Micheletto, MatÃas Javier. Reliabilibity Aware Thermal Management of Real-time Multi-core Systems
Continued scaling of CMOS technology has led to increasing working temperature of VLSI circuits. High temperature brings a greater probability of permanent errors (failure) in VLSI circuits, which is a critical threat for real-time systems. As the multi-core architecture is gaining in popularity, this research proposes an adaptive workload assignment approach for multi-core real-time systems to balance thermal stress among cores. While previously developed scheduling algorithms use temperature as the criterion, the proposed algorithm uses reliability of each core in the system to dynamically assign tasks to cores. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm gains as large as 10% benefit in system reliability compared with commonly used static assignment while algorithms using temperature as criterion gain 4%. The reliability difference between cores, which indicates the imbalance of thermal stress on each core, is as large as 25 times smaller when proposed algorithm is applied
Migrating Constant Bandwidth Servers on Multi-Cores
This paper introduces a novel admission test for partitioned CBS reservations on multi-core systems, that, on a new reservation arrival, is capable of exploiting better the CPU capacity in cases in which tasks have just recently left the CPU (for example, due to termination or migration to a different CPU). This is particularly useful for highly dynamic scenarios (with frequent arrivals of new tasks or leaves of existing ones) or when adaptive and possibly power-aware partitioning techniques (in which task migrations are triggered quite often to re-balance the workload among the available cores) are used
Efficient processor management strategies for multicomputer systems
Multicomputers are cost-effective alternatives to the conventional supercomputers. Contemporary processor management schemes tend to underutilize the processors and leave many of the processors in the system idle while jobs are waiting for execution;Instead of designing faster processors or interconnection networks, a substantial performance improvement can be obtained by implementing better processor management strategies. This dissertation studies the performance issues related to the processor management schemes and proposes several ways to enhance the multicomputer systems by means of processor management. The proposed schemes incorporate the concepts of size-reduction, non-contiguous allocation, as well as job migration. Job scheduling using a bypass-queue is also studied. All the proposed schemes are proven effective in improving the system performance via extensive simulations. Each proposed scheme has different implementation cost and constraints. In order to take advantage of these schemes, judicious selection of system parameters is important and is discussed
