    In response to growing fears from the entertainment industry over online file-sharing of valuable content, the Federal Communications Commission ( FCC ) enacted sweeping regulations over the production of electronic devices in the name of protecting digital television broadcasts. Although the FCC\u27s broadcast flag regulation was struck down on jurisdictional grounds, Hollywood has not given up the push for strict control. If Hollywood successfully acquires broadcast flag protection there could be far-reaching implications for innovation and development of new digital technologies. While content providers have important reasons to protect copyrighted material, there is too much at stake to merely acquiesce to their demands in the name of piracy prevention

    Fuzzy logic controller for half car active suspension system

    This work presents the MATLAB/Simulink simulation results of half car active suspension system controlled by the fuzzy logic controller. The half car model consists of one front and rear wheel. Firstly, a mathematical model of the suspension system is developed. Based on the developed mathematical model, the fuzzy logic controller for the system is designed. The input to the controller is the vertical displacement and velocity of the front body of the vehicle. The membership function of these two variables is adjusted accordingly so that the output, i.e., the car body acceleration, the deflection of the wheels and other output are better than that of the passive suspension system. The results clearly show that all of the active suspension system output has improved when compared to that of the passive system

    Ambient RF energy harvesting and efficient DC-load inductive power transfer

    This thesis analyses in detail the technology required for wireless power transfer via radio frequency (RF) ambient energy harvesting and an inductive power transfer system (IPT). Radio frequency harvesting circuits have been demonstrated for more than fifty years, but only a few have been able to harvest energy from freely available ambient (i.e. non-dedicated) RF sources. To explore the potential for ambient RF energy harvesting, a city-wide RF spectral survey was undertaken in London. Using the results from this survey, various harvesters were designed to cover four frequency bands from the largest RF contributors within the ultra-high frequency (0.3 to 3 GHz) part of the frequency spectrum. Prototypes were designed, fabricated and tested for each band and proved that approximately half of the London Underground stations were found to be suitable locations for harvesting ambient RF energy using the prototypes. Inductive Power Transfer systems for transmitting tens to hundreds of watts have been reported for almost a decade. Most of the work has concentrated on the optimization of the link efficiency and have not taken into account the efficiency of the driver and rectifier. Class-E amplifiers and rectifiers have been identified as ideal drivers for IPT applications, but their power handling capability at tens of MHz has been a crucial limiting factor, since the load and inductor characteristics are set by the requirements of the resonant inductive system. The frequency limitation of the driver restricts the unloaded Q-factor of the coils and thus the link efficiency. The system presented in this work alleviates the use of heavy and expensive field-shaping techniques by presenting an efficient IPT system capable of transmitting energy with high dc-to-load efficiencies at 6 MHz across a distance of 30 cm.Open Acces

    Joint energy harvesting time allocation and beamforming in two-way relaying network

    Abstract. A two-way relaying system with amplify-and-forward technique, where relay stations (RSs) acquire the energy from transmission signal and interferences, is considered. The RSs use the energy to amplify the signal received from the transmitter and forward it to the receiver. Particularly, energy harvesting (EH) and time switching (TS) are deployed. Based on the TS architecture, we divide transmission time into two time slots, which are EH phase and information transmission (IT) phase. In the EH phase, the RSs harvest the energy from the received radio frequency (RF) signal. In the IT phase, the RSs process and forward the transmission signal to the destination by energy harvesting during the EH phase. From such a transmission scheme, we investigate the optimal time ratio of the EH and IT phase as well as the beamforming at RSs in order to acquire the sum rate maximization. Since the sum-rate maximization problem is nonconvex, we develop an iterative algorithm based on the majorization-minimization (MM) technique to solve the problem. Furthermore, we deployed two schemes to overcome the self-interference to see the efficiency of each scheme related to sum-rate performance. The results show that power transmission and a number of relay station have a major impact on the sum rate performance of the two-way relay system
