Fast parallel volume visualization on cuda technology
In the medical diagnosis and treatment planning, radiologists and surgeons rely
heavily on the slices produced by medical imaging scanners. Unfortunately, most of
these scanners can only produce two dimensional images because the machines that
can produce three dimensional are very expensive. The two dimensional images from
these devices are difficult to interpret because they only show cross-sectional views
of the human structure. Consequently, such circumstances require highly qualified
doctors to use their expertise in the interpretation of the possible location, size or
shape of the abnormalities especially for large datasets of enormous amount of slices.
Previously, the concept of reconstructing two dimensional images to three
dimensional was introduced. However, such reconstruction model requires high
performance computation, may either be time-consuming or costly. Furthermore,
detecting the internal features of human anatomical structure, such as the imaging of
the blood vessels, is still an open topic in the computer-aided diagnosis of disorders
and pathologies. This study proposed, designed and implemented a visualization
framework named SurLens with high performance computing using Compute
Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), augmenting the widely proven ray casting
technique in terms of superior qualities of images but with slow speed. Considering
the rapid development of technology in the medical community, our framework is
implemented on Microsoft .NET environment for easy interoperability with other
emerging revolutionary tools. The Visualization System was evaluated with brain
datasets from the department of Surgery, University of North Carolina, United
States, containing 109 datasets of MRA, T1-FLASH, T2-Weighted, DTI and
T1-MPRAGE. Significantly, at a reasonably cheaper cost, SurLens Visualization
System achieves immediate reconstruction and obvious mappings of the internal
features of the human brain, reliable enough for instantaneously locate possible
blockages in the brain blood vessels without any prior segmentation of the datasets

Having established that technology mediated instruction of some kind\ud
has potential and a valuable role to play in education for on the move and remote\ud
area learners the paper looks at practice as documented and suggests that social\ud
and cultural barriers are a greater challenge than technological ones. It concludes\ud
by suggesting that successful implementation may depend both on use of familiar\ud
technology i.e. phones rather than internet, and establishing for users a social and\ud
cultural validity for using that technology for the delivery of education

The Open University Library in your pocket
The Open University library is working to support mobile learners through provision of mobile access to information management skills tutorials, the library website, and the library helpdesk. In 2007, we joined hands with the Athabasca University library team to develop the first mobile-friendly version of our library website. Since then, we have been actively researching and developing around other mobile library services, and more recently have consulted users to identify their requirements and what services theyâd prefer to access through mobile phones. Recommendations from this user consultation (and from other sources, including regular users' feedback and by tracking user behavior through Google Analytics) include revamping the mobile version of the Library website to offer only the most used services on the home page, implementing SMS (Short Messaging Service) such as loan reminders or library reference service, and developing a consolidated search to offer results from various sources including the library catalogue and e-journals collection
An Architectural Framework for Collaboration of Heterogeneous Communication Devices Using WAP and Mobile Device Augmented(MDA)Gateway Integration
Within the last couple of years, the challenge of displaying collaborative multimedia
information has become very important with the large diversity of communication devices
such as Personal Computers, laptops, notebooks and handheld devices. The shared data
and information may be presented with different views depending on the communication
device used by a particular collaborator. The use of various web tools (HTML, WML etc)
offers some solutions to the problem but if the target application requires more complex
features such as rich multimedia data than is manageable using HTML or WML format,
something else need to be done. In this paper, we propose a framework that integrates WAP
and MDA Gateway to support collaboration among virtual teams and nomadic workers
using heterogeneous communication devices. We then discuss an approach for augmenting
mobile device small screen capabilities with surrounding large screen display device
mLearning, development and delivery : creating opportunity and enterprise within the HE in FE context
This research project was funded by ESCalate in 2006-7 to support Somerset College in developing the curriculum, as well as widening participation via the use of mobile communications technologies such as mp3 players and mobile phones. The Project represents a highly topical and timely engagement with the opportunities for learning provided by the burgeoning use of mobile computing/ communications devices. Activities bring together colleagues from Teacher Education and Multimedia Computing in an innovative approach to designing for and delivering the curriculum. The Project addresses pedagogic issues and also vitally involves current and future learners, providing them with a new context for skills development and entrepreneurship. Anticipated outcomes include informed development of new HE modules and professional CPD activities which address the skills and context of this emerging approach to delivering the curriculum. The Project also intends to trial and evaluate the use of mobile technologies to support a blended learning approach to programme delivery and the development of a FD module which could be delivered via a mobile computing device. Demonstrating the feasibility of standardized application program interfaces that will allow mobile/portable terminals to receive services combining UMTS and DVB-T
Crucial to the commercial exploitation of any service combining UMTS and DVB-T is the availability of standardized APIâs adapted to the hybrid UMTS and DVB-T network and to the technical limitations of mobile/portable terminals. into services ready for broadcast. This is achieved by a series of tools that de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces (UI) and applications for mobile terminals.
The benefits of rapid prototyping are essential for the production of these new types of services, and are therefore discussed in the first section of this paper.
In the following sections, an overview of the
operation of content, service, creation and management sub-systems is presented, which illustrates why these tools compose an important and integral part of a system responsible of creating, delivering and managing converged broadcast and telecommunications services.
The next section examines a number of metadata
languages candidates for describing the iTV services user interface and the schema language adopted in this project. A detailed description of the operation of the two tools is provided to offer an insight of how they can be used to de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces and applications for mobile terminals. Finally, representative broadcast oriented and telecommunication oriented converged service components are also introduced, demonstrating how these tools have been used to generate different types of services
Synote mobile HTML5 responsive design video annotation application
Synote Mobile has been developed as an accessible cross device and cross browser HTML5 webbased collaborative replay and annotation tool to make web-based recordings easier to access, search, manage, and exploit for learners, teachers and others. It has been developed as a new mobile HTML5 version of the award winning open source and freely available Synote which has been used since 2008 by students throughout the world to learn interactively from recordings. While most UK students now carry mobile devices capable of replaying Internet video, the majority of these devices cannot replay Synoteâs accessible, searchable, annotated recordings as Synote was created in 2008 when few students had phones or tablets capable of replaying these videos
