Count three for wear able computers
This paper is a postprint of a paper submitted to and accepted for publication in the Proceedings of the IEE Eurowearable 2003 Conference, and is subject to Institution of Engineering and Technology Copyright. The copy of record is available at the IET Digital Library.
A revised version of this paper was also published in Electronics Systems and Software, also subject to Institution of Engineering and Technology Copyright. The copy of record is also available at the IET Digital Library.A description of 'ubiquitous computer' is presented. Ubiquitous computers imply portable computers embedded into everyday objects, which would replace personal computers. Ubiquitous computers can be mapped into a three-tier scheme, differentiated by processor performance and flexibility of function. The power consumption of mobile devices is one of the most important design considerations. The size of a wearable system is often a design limitation
An Integrated Software-based Solution for Modular and Self-independent Networked Robot
An integrated software-based solution for a modular and self-independent
networked robot is introduced. The wirelessly operatable robot has been
developed mainly for autonomous monitoring works with full control over web.
The integrated software solution covers three components : a) the digital
signal processing unit for data retrieval and monitoring system; b) the
externally executable codes for control system; and c) the web programming for
interfacing the end-users with the robot. It is argued that this integrated
software-based approach is crucial to realize a flexible, modular and low
development cost mobile monitoring apparatus.Comment: 9 pages, Proceeding of the 10th International Conference on Control,

Smart Embedded Passive Acoustic Devices for Real-Time Hydroacoustic Surveys
This paper describes cost-efficient, innovative and interoperable ocean passive acoustics sensors systems, developed within the European FP7 project NeXOS (Next generation Low-Cost Multifunctional Web Enabled Ocean Sensor Systems Empowering Marine, Maritime and Fisheries Management) These passive acoustic sensors consist of two low power, innovative digital hydrophone systems with embedded processing of acoustic data, A1 and A2, enabling real-time measurement of the underwater soundscape. An important part of the effort is focused on achieving greater dynamic range and effortless integration on autonomous platforms, such as gliders and profilers. A1 is a small standalone, compact, low power, low consumption digital hydrophone with embedded pre-processing of acoustic data, suitable for mobile platforms with limited autonomy and communication capability. A2 consists of four A1 digital hydrophones with Ethernet interface and one master unit for data processing, enabling real-time measurement of underwater noise and soundscape sources. In this work the real-time acoustic processing algorithms implemented for A1 and A2 are described, including computational load evaluations of the algorithms. The results obtained from the real time test done with the A2 assembly at OBSEA observatory collected during the verification phase of the project are presented.Postprint (author's final draft
Multifunctional photonic integrated circuit for diverse microwave signal generation, transmission and processing
Microwave photonics (MWP) studies the interaction between microwave and
optical waves for the generation, transmission and processing of microwave
signals (i.e., three key domains), taking advantages of broad bandwidth and low
loss offered by modern photonics. Integrated MWP using photonic integrated
circuits (PICs) can reach a compact, reliable and green implementation. Most
PICs, however, are recently developed to perform one or more functions
restricted inside a single domain. In this paper, as highly desired, a
multifunctional PIC is proposed to cover the three key domains. The PIC is
fabricated on InP platform by monolithically integrating four laser diodes and
two modulators. Using the multifunctional PIC, seven fundamental functions
across microwave signal generation, transmission and processing are
demonstrated experimentally. Outdoor field trials for electromagnetic
environment surveillance along an in-service high-speed railway are also
performed. The success to such a PIC marks a key step forward for practical and
massive MWP implementations.Comment: 17 page

Bioinspired Multifunctional Anti-icing Hydrogel
The recent anti-icing strategies in the state of the art mainly focused on three aspects: inhibiting ice nucleation, preventing ice propagation, and decreasing ice adhesion strength. However, it is has proved difficult to prevent ice nucleation and propagation while decreasing adhesion simultaneously, due to their highly distinct, even contradictory design principles. In nature, anti-freeze proteins (AFPs) offer a prime example of multifunctional integrated anti-icing materials that excel in all three key aspects of the anti-icing process simultaneously by tuning the structures and dynamics of interfacial water. Here, inspired by biological AFPs, we successfully created a multifunctional anti-icing material based on polydimethylsiloxane-grafted polyelectrolyte hydrogel that can tackle all three aspects of the anti-icing process simultaneously. The simplicity, mechanical durability, and versatility of these smooth hydrogel surfaces make it a promising option for a wide range of anti-icing applications
Functionalized MoS2 nanosheet-capped periodic mesoporous organosilicas as a multifunctional platform for synergistic targeted chemo-photothermal therapy
The combination of different therapies into a single platform has attracted increasing attention as a potential synergistic tumor treatment. Herein, the fabrication of a novel folate targeted system for chemo-photothermal therapy by using thioether-bridged periodic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (PMOs) as a drug-loading vehicle is described. The novel targeted molecular bovine serum albumin-folic acid-modified MoS2 sheets (MoS2-PEI-BSA-FA) were successfully synthesized and characterized, and then utilized as a capping agent to block PMOs to control the drug release and to investigate their potential in near-infrared photothermal therapy. The resulting PMOs–DOX@MoS2–PEI-BSA-FA complexes had a uniform diameter (196 nm); high DOX loading capacity (185 mg/g PMOs-SH); excellent photothermal transformation ability; and good biocompatibility in physiological conditions. The PMOs–DOX@MoS2–PEI-BSA-FA exhibited pH-dependence and near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation-triggered DOX release. In vitro experimental results confirmed that the material exhibits excellent photothermal transfer ability, outstanding tumor killing efficiency and specificity to target tumor cells via an FA-receptor-mediated endocytosis process. The in vivo experiments further demonstrated that the platform for synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy could significantly inhibit tumor growth, which is superior to any monotherapy. Meanwhile, cytotoxicity assays and histological assessments show that the engineered PMOs@MoS2–PEI-BSA-FA have good biocompatibility, further inspiring potential biomedical applications. Overall, this work describes an excellent drug delivery system for chemo-photothermal synergistic targeted therapy having good drug release properties, which have great potential in cancer therapy
