    Exploitation of Digital Filters to Advance the Single-Phase T/4 Delay PLL System

    With the development of digital signal processing technologies, control and monitoring of power electronics conversion systems have been evolving to become fully digital. As the basic element in the design and analysis phases of digital controllers or filters, a number of unit delays (z-1) have been employed, e.g., in a cascaded structure. Practically, the number of unit delays is designed as an integer, which is related to the sampling frequency as well as the ac signal fundamental frequency (e.g., 50 Hz). More common, the sampling frequency is fixed during operation for simplicity and design. Hence, any disturbance in the ac signal will violate this design rule and it can become a major challenge for digital controllers. To deal with the above issue, this paper first exploits a virtual unit delay (zv-1) to emulate the variable sampling behavior in practical digital signal processors with a fixed sampling rate. This exploitation is demonstrated on a T/4 Delay Phase Locked Loop (PLL) system for a single-phase grid-connected inverter. The T/4 Delay PLL requires to cascade 50 unit delays when implemented (for a 50-Hz system with 10 kHz sampling frequency). Furthermore, digital frequency adaptive comb filters are adopted to enhance the performance of the T/4 Delay PLL when the grid suffers from harmonics. Experimental results have confirmed the effectiveness of the digital filters for advanced control systems

    A Fully-Integrated Reconfigurable Dual-Band Transceiver for Short Range Wireless Communications in 180 nm CMOS

The TRX consists of two individually-optimized RF front-ends for each band and one shared power-scalable analog baseband. The sub-GHz receiver has achieved the maximum 75 dBc 3rd-order harmonic rejection ratio (HRR3) by inserting a Q-enhanced notch filtering RF amplifier (RFA). In 2.4 GHz band, a single-ended-to-differential RFA with gain/phase imbalance compensation is proposed in the receiver. A ΣΔ fractional-N PLL frequency synthesizer with two switchable Class-C VCOs is employed to provide the LOs. Moreover, the integrated multi-mode PAs achieve the output P1dB (OP1dB) of 16.3 dBm and 14.1 dBm with both 25% PAE for sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, respectively. A power-control loop is proposed to detect the input signal PAPR in real-time and flexibly reconfigure the PA's operation modes to enhance the back-off efficiency. With this proposed technique, the PAE of the sub-GHz PA is improved by x3.24 and x1.41 at 9 dB and 3 dB back-off powers, respectively, and the PAE of the 2.4 GHz PA is improved by x2.17 at 6 dB back-off power. The presented transceiver has achieved comparable or even better performance in terms of noise figure, HRR, OP1dB and power efficiency compared with the state-of-the-art.Peer reviewe

    Design and Implementation of Control Techniques of Power Electronic Interfaces for Photovoltaic Power Systems

    The aim of this thesis is to scrutinize and develop four state-of-the-art power electronics converter control techniques utilized in various photovoltaic (PV) power conversion schemes accounting for maximum power extraction and efficiency. First, Cascade Proportional and Integral (PI) Controller-Based Robust Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) of a DC-DC boost converter has been designed and investigated. Non-minimum phase behaviour of the boost converter due to right half plane zero constitutes a challenge and its non-linear dynamics complicate the control process while operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). The proposed control scheme efficiently resolved complications and challenges by using features of cascade PI control loop in combination with properties of MRAC. The accuracy of the proposed control system’s ability to track the desired signals and regulate the plant process variables in the most beneficial and optimised way without delay and overshoot is verified. The experimental results and analysis reveal that the proposed control strategy enhanced the tracking speed two times with considerably improved disturbance rejection. Second, (P)roportional Gain (R)esonant and Gain Scheduled (P)roportional (PR-P) Controller has been designed and investigated. The aim of this controller is to create a variable perturbation size real-time adaptive perturb and observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm. The proposed control scheme resolved the drawbacks of conventional P&O MPPT method associated with the use of constant perturbation size that leads to a poor transient response and high continuous steady-state oscillations. The prime objective of using the PR-P controller is to utilize inherited properties of the signal produced by the controller’s resonant path and integrate it to update best estimated perturbation that represents the working principle of extremum seeking control (ESC) to use in a P&O algorithm that characterizes the overall system learning-based real time adaptive (RTA). Additionally, utilization of internal dynamics of the PR-P controller overcome the challenges namely, complexity, computational burden, implantation cost and slow tracking performance in association with commonly used soft computing intelligent systems and adaptive control strategies. The experimental results and analysis reveal that the proposed control strategy enhanced the tracking speed five times with reduced steady-state oscillations around maximum power point (MPP) and more than 99% energy extracting efficiency.Third, the interleaved buck converter based photovoltaic (PV) emulator current control has been investigated. A proportional-resonant-proportional (PR-P) controller is designed to resolve the drawbacks of conventional PI controllers in terms of phase management which means balancing currents evenly between active phases to avoid thermally stressing and provide optimal ripple cancellation in the presence of parameter uncertainties. The proposed controller shows superior performance in terms of 10 times faster-converging transient response, zero steady-state error with significant reduction in current ripple. Equal load sharing that constitutes the primary concern in multi-phase converters has been achieved with the proposed controller. Implementing of robust control theory involving comprehensive time and frequency domain analysis reveals 13% improvement in the robust stability margin and 12-degree bigger phase toleration with the PR-P controller. Fourth, a symmetrical pole placement Method-based Unity Proportional Gain Resonant and Gain Scheduled Proportional (PR-P) Controller has been designed and investigated. The proposed PR-P controller resolved the issues associated with the use of the PI controller which are tracking repeating control input signal with zero steady-state and mitigating the 3rd order harmonic component injected into the grid for single-phase PV systems. Additionally, the PR-P controller has overcome the drawbacks of frequency detuning in the grid and increase in the magnitude of odd number harmonics in the system that constitute the common concerns in the implementation of conventional PR controller. Moreover, the unprecedented design process based on changing notch filter dynamics with symmetrical pole placement around resonant frequency overcomes the limitations that are essentially complexity and dependency on the precisely modelled system. The verification and validation process of the proposed control schemes has been conducted using MATLAB/Simulink and implementing MATLAB/Simulink/State flow on dSPACE Real-time-interface (RTI) 1007 processor, DS2004 High-Speed A/D and CP4002 Timing and Digital I/O boards

    An Enhanced DC-Bus Voltage-Control Loop for Single-Phase Grid-Connected DC/AC Converters

This paper presents a method to enhance the dc-bus voltage-control loop of a single-phase grid-connected dc/ac converter, which improves its responses in terms of oscillation on its dc-bus voltage as well as its output ac current. Conventionally, the double-frequency (2-f) ripple is reduced by using a large electrolyte capacitor, which increases the cost and size of the system. A state-of-the-art approach is to use a notch filter (NF) to block the 2-f ripple in the voltage-control loop. This can significantly reduce the capacitor size. The existing presentations of this method, however, do not integrate the internal dynamics of the NF into consideration. This paper proposes a new way of implementing the NF, which allows integration of its internal variables into the control loop. The resulted system exhibits enhanced transient responses at both the dc-bus voltage and the output ac current. The proposed method is analyzed in detail and its effectiveness is verified through simulations and experimental results

    Enhanced Quasi Type-1 PLL-Based Multi-Functional Control of Single-Phase Dynamic Voltage Restorer

    This paper considers the reference signal generation problem for the multi-functional operation of single-phase dynamic voltage restorers. For this purpose, a single-phase quasi type-1 phase-locked loop (QT1-PLL) is proposed. The pre-loop filter part of this PLL is composed of a frequency-fixed delayed signal cancellation method and a two-stage all-pass filter. Thanks to the frequency-fixed nature, the pre-loop filter is easy to implement and can provide rejection of any measurement offset. Moreover, this PLL benefits from the excellent harmonic robustness property of the conventional QT1-PLL. Small-signal modeling and gain tuning procedures are detailed in this paper. In order to track the reference voltage signals generated by the proposed PLL, a super-twisting sliding mode controller is also presented, which helps to achieve fast dynamic responses. Laboratory-scale prototype-based experimental studies were conducted to validate the developed reference generator and the controller. Experimental results show that the proposed method is fast in detecting and compensating any grid voltage anomalies to maintain constant load voltage despite voltage sag, swell, and harmonic distortions

    Three-phase phase-locked loop synchronization algorithms for grid-connected renewable energy systems:A review

    The increasing penetration of distributed renewable energy sources (RES) requires appropriate control techniques in order to remain interconnected and contribute in a proper way to the overall grid stability, whenever disturbances occur. In addition, the disconnection of RES due to synchronization problems must be avoided as this may result in penalties and loss of energy generation to RES operators. The control of RES mainly depends on the synchronization algorithm, which should be fast and accurately detect the grid voltage status (e.g., phase, amplitude, and frequency). Typically, phase-locked loop (PLL) synchronization techniques are used for the grid voltage monitoring. The design and performance of PLL directly affect the dynamics of the RES grid side converter (GSC). This paper presents the characteristics, design guidelines and features of advanced state-of-the-art PLL-based synchronization algorithms under normal, abnormal and harmonically-distorted grid conditions. Experimental tests on the selected PLL methods under different grid conditions are presented, followed by a comparative benchmarking and selection guide.
