However, practical applications are still limited by factors such as non-rigid facial motion and head movement. In this work, a detailed system framework for remotely estimating heart rate from facial videos under various movement conditions is described. APPROACH: After the rPPG signal has been obtained from a defined region of the facial skin, a method, termed 'Project_ICA', based on a skin reflection model, is employed to extract the pulse signal from the original signal. MAIN RESULTS: To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a dataset containing 112 videos including the challenges of various skin tones, body motion and HR recovery after exercise was created from 28 participants. SIGNIFICANCE: The results show that Project_ICA, when evaluated by several criteria, provides a more accurate and robust estimate of HR than most existing methods, although problems remain in obtaining reliable measurements from dark-skinned subjects

AbstractOver the last few years, the contactless acquisition of cardiovascular parameters using cameras has gained immense attention. The technique provides an optical means to acquire cardiovascular information in a very convenient way. This review provides an overview on the technique’s background and current realizations. Besides giving detailed information on the most widespread application of the technique, namely the contactless acquisition of heart rate, we outline further concepts and we critically discuss the current state.</jats:p

Methods for acquisition and integration of personal wellness parameters

Wellness indicates the state or condition of being in good physical and mental health. Stress is a common state of emotional strain that plays a crucial role in the everyday quality of life. Nowadays, there is a growing individual awareness of the importance of a proper lifestyle and a generalized trend to become an active part in monitoring, preserving, and improving personal wellness for both physical and emotional aspects. The majority studies in this field relies on the evaluation of the changes of sensed parameters passing from rest to “maximal” stress. However, the vast majority of people usually experiences stressing circumstances in everyday life. This led us to investigate the impact of mild cognitive activation which can be somehow comparable to usual situations that everyone can face in daily life. Several signals and data can be useful to characterize the state of a person, but not all of them are equally important. So it is crucial to analyse the mutual relevance of the different pieces of information. In this work we focus on a subset of well-established psychophysical descriptors and we identified a set of devices enabling the measurement of these parameters . The design of the experimental setup and the selection of sensing devices were driven by qualitative criteria such as intrusiveness, reliability, and ease of use. These are deemed crucial for implementing effective (self-)monitoring strategies. A reference dataset, named “Mild Cognitive Activation” (MCA), was collected. The last aim of the project was the definition of a quantitative model for data integration providing a concise description of the wellness status of a person. This process was based on unsupervised learning paradigms. Data from MCA were integrated with data from the “Stress Recognition in Automobile Drivers” dataset . This allowed a cross validation of the integration methodology

VOLUNTARY CONTROL OF BREATHING ACCORDING TO THE BREATHING PATTERN DURING LISTENING TO MUSIC AND NON-CONTACT MEASUREMENT OF HEART RATE AND RESPIRATION

We investigated if listening to songs changes breathing pattern which changes autonomic responses such as heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) or change in breathing pattern is a byproduct of listening to songs or change in breathing pattern as well as listening to songs causes changes in autonomic responses. Seven subjects (4 males and 3 females) participated in a pilot study where they listened to two types of songs and used a custom developed biofeedback program to control their breathing pattern to match the one recorded during listening to the songs. Coherencies between EEG, breathing pattern and RR intervals (RRI) were calculated to study the interaction with neural responses. Trends in HRV varied only during listening to songs, suggesting that autonomic response was affected by listening to songs irrespective of control of breathing. Effective coherence during songs while spontaneously breathing was more than during silence and during control of breathing. These results, although preliminary, suggest that listening to songs as well as change in breathing patterns changes the autonomic response but the effect of listening to songs may surpass the effect of changes in breathing. We explored feasibility of using non-contact measurements of HR and breathing rate (BR) by using recently developed Facemesh and other methods for tracking regions of interests from videos of faces of subjects. Performance was better for BR than HR, and over currently used methods. However, refinement of the approach would be needed to get the precision required for detecting subtle changes

Blind Source Separation for the Processing of Contact-Less Biosignals

Neuartige Algorithmen basierend auf Sparse Coding erwiesen sich dabei als besonders effizient im Vergleich zu Standard-Methoden.(Spatio-temporal) Blind Source Separation (BSS) provides a large potential to process distorted multichannel biosignal measurements in the context of novel contact-less recording techniques for separating distortions from the cardiac signal of interest. This potential can only be practically utilized (1) if a BSS model is applied that matches the complexity of the measurement, i.e. the signal mixture and (2) if permutation indeterminacy is solved among the BSS output components, i.e the component of interest can be practically selected. The present work, first, designs a framework to assess the efficacy of BSS algorithms in the context of the camera-based photoplethysmogram (cbPPG) and characterizes multiple BSS algorithms, accordingly. Algorithm selection recommendations for certain mixture characteristics are derived. Second, the present work develops and evaluates concepts to solve permutation indeterminacy for BSS outputs of contact-less electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings. The novel approach based on sparse coding is shown to outperform the existing concepts of higher order moments and frequency-domain features
