One-Variable Fragments of First-Order Many-Valued Logics
In this thesis we study one-variable fragments of first-order logics. Such a one-variable fragment consists of those first-order formulas that contain only unary predicates and a single variable. These fragments can be viewed from a modal perspective by replacing the universal and existential quantifier with a box and diamond modality, respectively, and the unary predicates with corresponding propositional variables. Under this correspondence, the one-variable fragment of first-order classical logic famously corresponds to the modal logic S5.
This thesis explores some such correspondences between first-order and modal logics. Firstly, we study first-order intuitionistic logics based on linear intuitionistic Kripke frames. We show that their one-variable fragments correspond to particular modal Gödel logics, defined over many-valued S5-Kripke frames. For a large class of these logics, we prove the validity problem to be decidable, even co-NP-complete. Secondly, we investigate the one-variable fragment of first-order Abelian logic, i.e., the first-order logic based on the ordered additive group of the reals. We provide two completeness results with respect to Hilbert-style axiomatizations: one for the one-variable fragment, and one for the one-variable fragment that does not contain any lattice connectives. Both these fragments are proved to be decidable. Finally, we launch a much broader algebraic investigation into one-variable fragments. We turn to the setting of first-order substructural logics (with the rule of exchange). Inspired by work on, among others, monadic Boolean algebras and monadic Heyting algebras, we define monadic commutative pointed residuated lattices as a first (algebraic) investigation into one-variable fragments of this large class of first-order logics. We prove a number of properties for these newly defined algebras, including a characterization in terms of relatively complete subalgebras as well as a characterization of their congruences
Structural and universal completeness in algebra and logic
In this work we study the notions of structural and universal completeness
both from the algebraic and logical point of view. In particular, we provide
new algebraic characterizations of quasivarieties that are actively and
passively universally complete, and passively structurally complete. We apply
these general results to varieties of bounded lattices and to quasivarieties
related to substructural logics. In particular we show that a substructural
logic satisfying weakening is passively structurally complete if and only if
every classical contradiction is explosive in it. Moreover, we fully
characterize the passively structurally complete varieties of MTL-algebras,
i.e., bounded commutative integral residuated lattices generated by chains.Comment: This is a preprin
On some axiomatic extensions of the monoidal T-norm based logic MTL : an analysis in the propositional and in the first-order case
The scientific area this book belongs to are many-valued logics: in particular, the logic MTL and some of its extensions, in the propositional and in the first-order case. The book is divided in two parts: in the first one the necessary background about these logics, with some minor new results, are presented. The second part is devoted to more specific topics: there are five chapters, each one about a different problem. In chapter 6 a temporal semantics for Basic Logic BL is presented. In chapter 7 we move to first-order logics, by studying the supersoundness property: we have improved some previous works about this theme, by expanding the analysis to many extensions of the first-order version of MTL. Chapter 8 is dedicated to four different families of n-contractive axiomatic extensions of BL, analyzed in the propositional and in the first-order case: completeness, computational and arithmetical complexity, amalgamation and interpolation properties are studied. Finally, chapters 9 and 10 are about Nilpotent Minimum logic: in chapter 9 the sets of tautologies of some NM-chains (subalgebras of [0,1]_NM) are studied, compared and the problems of axiomatization and undecidability are tackled. Chapter 10, instead, concerns some logical and algebraic properties of (propositional) Nilpotent Minimum logic. The results (or an extended version of them) of these last chapters have been also presented in papers

Weighted automata and multi-valued logics over arbitrary bounded lattices
AbstractWe show that L-weighted automata, L-rational series, and L-valued monadic second order logic have the same expressive power, for any bounded lattice L and for finite and infinite words. We also prove that aperiodicity, star-freeness, and L-valued first-order and LTL-definability coincide. This extends classical results of Kleene, Büchi–Elgot–Trakhtenbrot, and others to arbitrary bounded lattices, without any distributivity assumption that is fundamental in the theory of weighted automata over semirings. In fact, we obtain these results for large classes of strong bimonoids which properly contain all bounded lattices
Stone-Type Dualities for Separation Logics
Stone-type duality theorems, which relate algebraic and
relational/topological models, are important tools in logic because -- in
addition to elegant abstraction -- they strengthen soundness and completeness
to a categorical equivalence, yielding a framework through which both algebraic
and topological methods can be brought to bear on a logic. We give a systematic
treatment of Stone-type duality for the structures that interpret bunched
logics, starting with the weakest systems, recovering the familiar BI and
Boolean BI (BBI), and extending to both classical and intuitionistic Separation
Logic. We demonstrate the uniformity and modularity of this analysis by
additionally capturing the bunched logics obtained by extending BI and BBI with
modalities and multiplicative connectives corresponding to disjunction,
negation and falsum. This includes the logic of separating modalities (LSM), De
Morgan BI (DMBI), Classical BI (CBI), and the sub-classical family of logics
extending Bi-intuitionistic (B)BI (Bi(B)BI). We additionally obtain as
corollaries soundness and completeness theorems for the specific Kripke-style
models of these logics as presented in the literature: for DMBI, the
sub-classical logics extending BiBI and a new bunched logic, Concurrent Kleene
BI (connecting our work to Concurrent Separation Logic), this is the first time
soundness and completeness theorems have been proved. We thus obtain a
comprehensive semantic account of the multiplicative variants of all standard
propositional connectives in the bunched logic setting. This approach
synthesises a variety of techniques from modal, substructural and categorical
logic and contextualizes the "resource semantics" interpretation underpinning

Weighted Tree Automata -- May it be a little more?
This is a book on weighted tree automata. We present the basic definitions
and some of the important results in a coherent form with full proofs. The
concept of weighted tree automata is part of Automata Theory and it touches the
area of Universal Algebra. It originated from two sources: weighted string
automata and finite-state tree automata
