First Steps Towards an Organology Of Virtual Instruments In Computer Music
International audienceIn this paper, we will first take assess of 25 years of interactive real-time music, and introduce the problem of preservation of this music for the future generations, that is to say its ability to be re-performed, and not only to preserve the recordings. We present the state of the art in the field of active preservation of real-time works. We then give an overview of the solutions developed by IRCAM and its partners Grame, Armines ParisTech and CIEREC, in the framework of the ASTREE project, and explain the possibilities envisioned in a case study that is En Echo by Philippe Manoury
Electronic music is here to stay – or is it?
Musical composers frequently make use of new technologies in instrumentation. Whilst orchestral traditions remain strong and the instruments viable, what of the works of composers of electronic music where the sound sources have fallen into disrepair, obsolescence, or modern technology has changed the sound so that it bears no relation to the original? Beyond collections of manuscripts and recordings, the practicalities of the re-performance of electronic music compositions have not been widely discussed, and no methodology for archiving the artefacts for re-performability exists. In time, as greater importance is placed on these works, the issue will become more difficult to retrospectively resolve
Transcription, Adaptation and Maintenance in Live Electronic Performance with Acoustic Instruments
This paper examines processes of musical adaptation in a live electronic context, taking as a case study the authors’ collaborative work transcribing Richard Dudas’ Prelude No.1 for flute and computer (2005), to a new version for clarinet and live electronics, performed in the Spring of 2014 by clarinettist Pete Furniss. As such, the idea of transcription and its implications are central to this study. We will additionally address some of the salient information that the user interface in a piece of interactive electro-instrumental music should present to the performer, as well as some possible ways of restructuring not only the interface itself, but also the deroulement of the piece to aid the solo performer to the maximum degree possible. A secondary focus of the paper is to underline the need for the creation of a body of musical works that are technically straightforward enough to serve as an introduction to live electronic performance for musicians who might otherwise be daunted by the demands of the existing repertoire
From Bitstreams to Heritage: Putting Digital Forensics into Practice in Collecting Institutions
This paper examines the application of digital forensics methods to materials in collecting institutions – particularly libraries, archives and museums. It discusses motivations, challenges, and emerging strategies for the use of these technologies and workflows. It is a product of the BitCurator project.
The BitCurator project began on October 1, 2011, through funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. BitCurator is an effort to build, test, and analyze systems and software for incorporating digital forensics methods into the workflows of a variety of collecting institutions. It is led by the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) at the University of Maryland, and involves contributors from several other institutions. Two groups of external partners are contributing to this process: a Professional Expert Panel (PEP) of individuals who are at various levels of implementing digital forensics tools and methods in their collecting institution contexts, and a Development Advisory Group (DAG) of individuals who have significant experience with software development.2
This paper is a product of phase one of BitCurator (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2013). The second phase of the project (October 1, 2013 – September 29, 2014) continues the development of the BitCurator environment, along with expanded professional engagement and community outreach activities
estabelecido desde a segunda metade do séc. XX.
As duas principais estratégias deste género musical - tempo-diferido e tempo-real,
elementos fundamentais: o factor tecnológico e o factor humano.
This dissertation comprises a theoretical study and artistic creation on mixed music.
Mixed music, as a musical genre, was established since the second half of the twentieth century.
It can be defined as the combination of acoustic and electronic means. More specifically, the
combination in a performance of one or more acoustic instruments with electronically generated,
processed or reproduced sounds.
Both the two main strategies, used in this musical genre - deferred-time and real-time,
present advantages and constraints which have a strong influence on the freedom of performance
expression. Starting from questions raised about these problems and from the several kinds of
relations established during a performance, we formulated the hypothesis that the relations which
privilege musical expressiveness are those between human and not between human and
technology. However performance expression freedom is accomplished when both acoustic and
electronic means are on equal footing. This implies that the electroacustic mean should be
flexible in a way that can be performable with a system that behaves like an instrument.
To verify these claims we undertake a systematic study on the problems around mixed
music performance, approaching separately its fundamental elements: the human factor and the
technological factor. After this parallel study, we performed a convergence of these factors
culminating with the proposition of a performance conceptual model based on the importance of
musical interaction between performers and that this is a corollary of the possibility of
performative expression. This model, which we refer to as Dynamic Relations Systems, is a
concept whose implications affect both performance and creative act.
This research includes a practical feature with several applications of this concept. On this
basis, we were allowed to deduct this proposed model’s degrees of applicability and thus verify
its viability
algumas obras. The present work approaches music for Guitar and electronics. At first I
investigate how the academic production conceives the history and the
interactive processes in the mixed music. In sequence, I propose narratives
about the history of the repertoire for guitar and electronics using, in a
convergent way, different discursive axes. After this stage, I analyze the
different ways of representing the synchrony between instrumental and
electroacoustic sounds and investigate the sustainability condition of the works
and the actions necessary for their permanence. Finally, I discuss the
performance of the investigated repertoire through interviews, reviews of the
literature and my practical experience with some works.
