    A language for information commerce processes

    Automatizing information commerce requires languages to represent the typical information commerce processes. Existing languages and standards cover either only very specific types of business models or are too general to capture in a concise way the specific properties of information commerce processes. We introduce a language that is specifically designed for information commerce. It can be directly used for the implementation of the processes and communication required in information commerce. It allows to cover existing business models that are known either from standard proposals or existing information commerce applications on the Internet. The language has a concise logical semantics.     Application of shape grammar theory to underground rail station design and passenger evacuation

    This paper outlines the development of a computer design environment that generates station ‘reference’ plans for analysis by designers at the project feasibility stage. The developed program uses the theoretical concept of shape grammar, based upon principles of recognition and replacement of a particular shape to enable the generation of station layouts. The developed novel shape grammar rules produce multiple plans of accurately sized infrastructure faster than by traditional means. A finite set of station infrastructure elements and a finite set of connection possibilities for them, directed by regulations and the logical processes of station usage, allows for increasingly complex composite shapes to be automatically produced, some of which are credible station layouts at ‘reference’ block plan level. The proposed method of generating shape grammar plans is aligned to London Underground standards, in particular to the Station Planning Standards and Guidelines 5th edition (SPSG5 2007) and the BS-7974 fire safety engineering process. Quantitative testing is via existing evacuation modelling software. The prototype system, named SGEvac, has both the scope and potential for redevelopment to any other country’s design legislation

    A layered view model for XML with conceptual and logical extensions, and its applications

Faculty of Information Technology.EXtensible Markup Language (XML) is becoming the dominant standard for storing, describing and interchanging data among various Enterprises Information Systems (EIS), web repositories and databases. With this increasing reliance on such self-describing, schema-based, semi-structured data language XML, there exists a need to model, design, and manipulate XML and associated semantics at a higher level of abstraction than at the instance level. However, existing OO conceptual modelling languages provide insufficient modelling constructs for utilizing XML structures, descriptions and constraints, and XML and associated schema languages lack the ability to provide higher levels of abstraction, such as conceptual models that are easily understood by humans. To this end, it is interesting to investigate conceptual and schema formalisms as a means of providing higher level semantics in the context of XML-related data modelling. In particular we note that there is a strong need to model views of XML repositories at the conceptual level. This is in contrast to the situation for views for the relational model which are generally defined at the implementation level. In this research, we use XML view and introduce the Layered View Model (LVM, for short), a declarative conceptual framework for specifying and defining views at a higher level of abstraction. The views in the LVM are specified using explicit conceptual, logical and instance level semantics and provide declarative transformation between these levels of abstraction. For such a task, an elaborated and enhanced OO based modelling and transformation methodology is employed. The LVM framework leads to a number of interesting problems that are studied in this research. First we address the issue of conceptualizing the notion of views: the clear separation of conceptual concerns from the implementation and data language concerns. Here, the LVM views are considered as first-class citizens of the conceptual model. Second we provide formal semantics and definitions to enforce representation, specification and definition of such views at the highest level of abstraction, the conceptual level. Third we address the issue of modelling and transformation of LVM views to the required level of abstraction, namely to the schema and instance levels. Finally, we apply LVM to real-world data modelling scenarios to develop other architectural frameworks in the domains such as dimensional XML data modelling, ontology views in the Semantic Web paradigm and modelling user-centred websites and web portals

    The International Conference on e-Business, ICE-B 2010, aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners who are interested in e-Business technology and its current applications. The mentioned technology relates not only to more low-level technological issues, such as technology platforms and web services, but also to some higher-level issues, such as context awareness and enterprise models, and also the peculiarities of different possible applications of such technology. These are all areas of theoretical and practical importance within the broad scope of e-Business, whose growing importance can be seen from the increasing interest of the IT research community. The areas of the current conference are: (i) e-Business applications; (ii) Enterprise engineering; (iii) Mobility; (iv) Business collaboration and e-Services; (v) Technology platforms. Contributions vary from research-driven to being more practical oriented, reflecting innovative results in the mentioned areas. ICE-B 2010 received 66 submissions, of which 9% were accepted as full papers. Additionally, 27% were presented as short papers and 17% as posters. All papers presented at the conference venue were included in the SciTePress Digital Library. Revised best papers are published by Springer-Verlag in a CCIS Series book

Nowadays, management of supply chains does not only consider business processes in the traditional value chain, but also processes that penetrate networks of organisations. Indeed, the formation of cooperation and collaboration partnerships between several small organizations can be, in multiple cases, more efficient by comparison with big companies (Rudberg et al., 2002). This way, the research on supply chain management has turned from an intra-enterprise focus towards an inter-enterprise focus with companies looking for enhanced interoperability between computer systems and applications. Supply chain networks are characterized by different structures such as, business processes and technological, organizational, topological, informational, and financial structures. All are interrelated but following their own dynamics. Thus, in order to ensure a high responsiveness level, the supply chain plans must be formed robustly and extremely quickly in relation to all the structures (Gupta & Maranas, 2003). In fact, with regards to supply chain in the advent of globalization, one of the difficulties enterprises are facing is the lack of interoperability of systems and software applications to manage and orchestrate the different structures involved (Jardim-Goncalves et al. 2006; Panetto et al., 2006; Farinha et al., 2007).
