    University partnerships for co-designing and co-producing urban sustainability

    Universities are playing an increasingly central role in advancing sustainability at the local, regional and national scale through cross-sector collaborations. Accompanying the launch of Future Earth, interest is mounting in the co-design and co-production of knowledge and solutions for advancing global sustainability, particularly in urban areas. Place-based university partnerships appear as particularly significant vehicles for enacting co-design and co-production in the context of urban sustainability. However, the nature and role of these partnerships are not well understood, in part due to the absence of systematic analyses across multiple cases. To fill this gap, the objectives of this paper were to conduct a large-scale international survey focusing on university partnerships for urban sustainability in industrialised Europe, Asia and North America to (1) determine defining features such as focus areas, geographical scales, mechanisms, actors and motivations, and (2) identify commonly encountered drivers, barriers and potential impacts. Results indicate that partnerships most typically target energy, buildings, governance and social systems, unfold at local or city-scales, and involve collaborations with local or regional government. Our analysis shows that potential outcomes of university initiatives to co-design and co-produce urban sustainability are not limited to knowledge and policy. They also encompass the creation of new technological prototypes, businesses and new socio-technical systems, in addition to transformations of the built and natural environment. Findings also suggest that individual partnerships are making strong social, environmental and sustainability impacts, with less evidence of economic contributions. Strategies are required to enhance project management and ensure that projects address contrasting priorities and time horizons in academia and local government. Implications for policy include findings that targeted funding programmes can play a key role in fostering partnerships. Measures are also required to challenge academic norms and incentive structures that, in some cases, hinder university efforts to engage in place-based initiatives to co-design and co-produce urban sustainability

    El transporte es fuente de numerosas externalidades negativas, como los accidentes de tráfico, la congestión en las zonas urbanas y la falta de calidad del aire. El transporte también es un sector que contribuye sustancialmente a la crisis climática con más del 16% de las emisiones globales de gases de efecto invernadero como resultado de las actividades de transporte. Muchos creen que la introducción de nuevos servicios de movilidad podría ayudar a reducir esas externalidades. Sin embargo, con cada introducción de un nuevo servicio de movilidad podemos observar factores que podrían contribuir negativamente a la sostenibilidad del sistema de transporte: una cadena de cambios de comportamiento causados por la introducción de posibilidades completamente nuevas. El objetivo de esta tesis es investigar cómo los nuevos servicios de movilidad, habilitados por la electrificación, la conectividad y la automatización, podrían impactar en las externalidades causadas por el transporte. En particular, el objetivo es desarrollar y validar un marco de modelado capaz de capturar la complejidad del sistema de transporte y aplicarlo para evaluar el impacto potencial de los vehículos automatizados.Transport is a source of numerous negative externalities, such as road accidents, congestion in urban areas and lacking air quality. Transport is also a sector substantially contributing to climate crisis with more than 16% of global greenhouse gas emissions being a result of transport activities. Many believe that the introduction of new mobility services could help reduce those externalities. However, with each introduction of a new mobility service we can observe factors that could negatively contribute to the sustainability of the transport system – a chain of behavioural changes caused by introduction of entirely new possibilities. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how the new mobility services, enabled by electrification, connectivity and automation, could impact the externalities caused by transport. In particular the objective is to develop and validate a modelling framework able to capture the complexity of the transport system and to apply it to assess the potential impact of automated vehicles.This work was realised with the collaboration of the European Commission Joint Research Centre under the Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Agreement N035297.     Despite the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenge of realizing sustainability across the triple bottom line of social, environmental, and economic development remains an urgent priority. If anything, it is now imperative that we work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the global challenges are significant. Many of the societal challenges represent complex problems that require multifaceted solutions drawing on multidisciplinary approaches. Engineering management involves the management of people and projects related to technological or engineering systems—this includes project management, engineering economy, and technology management, as well as the management and leadership of teams. Systems engineering involves the design, integration, and management of complex systems over the full life cycle—this includes requirements capture, integrated system design, as well as modelling and simulation. In addition to the theoretical underpinnings of both disciplines, they also provide a range of tools and techniques that can be used to address technological and organisational complexity. The disciplines of engineering management and systems engineering are therefore ideally suited to help tackle both the challenges and opportunities associated with realising a sustainable future for all. This book provides new insights on how engineering management and systems engineering can be utilised as part of the journey towards sustainability. The book includes discussion of a broad range of different approaches to investigate sustainability through utilising quantitative, qualitative and conceptual methodologies. The book will be of interest to researchers and students focused on the field of sustainability as well as practitioners concerned with devising strategies for sustainable development
