One-bit Distributed Sensing and Coding for Field Estimation in Sensor Networks
This paper formulates and studies a general distributed field reconstruction
problem using a dense network of noisy one-bit randomized scalar quantizers in
the presence of additive observation noise of unknown distribution. A
constructive quantization, coding, and field reconstruction scheme is developed
and an upper-bound to the associated mean squared error (MSE) at any point and
any snapshot is derived in terms of the local spatio-temporal smoothness
properties of the underlying field. It is shown that when the noise, sensor
placement pattern, and the sensor schedule satisfy certain weak technical
requirements, it is possible to drive the MSE to zero with increasing sensor
density at points of field continuity while ensuring that the per-sensor
bitrate and sensing-related network overhead rate simultaneously go to zero.
The proposed scheme achieves the order-optimal MSE versus sensor density
scaling behavior for the class of spatially constant spatio-temporal fields.Comment: Fixed typos, otherwise same as V2. 27 pages (in one column review

Toward a Robust Sparse Data Representation for Wireless Sensor Networks
Compressive sensing has been successfully used for optimized operations in
wireless sensor networks. However, raw data collected by sensors may be neither
originally sparse nor easily transformed into a sparse data representation.
This paper addresses the problem of transforming source data collected by
sensor nodes into a sparse representation with a few nonzero elements. Our
contributions that address three major issues include: 1) an effective method
that extracts population sparsity of the data, 2) a sparsity ratio guarantee
scheme, and 3) a customized learning algorithm of the sparsifying dictionary.
We introduce an unsupervised neural network to extract an intrinsic sparse
coding of the data. The sparse codes are generated at the activation of the
hidden layer using a sparsity nomination constraint and a shrinking mechanism.
Our analysis using real data samples shows that the proposed method outperforms
conventional sparsity-inducing methods.Comment: 8 page
No-Sense: Sense with Dormant Sensors
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have enabled continuous monitoring of an area
of interest (body, room, region, etc.) while eliminating expensive wired
infrastructure. Typically in such applications, wireless sensor nodes report
the sensed values to a sink node, where the information is required for the
end-user. WSNs also provide the flexibility to the end-user for choosing
several parameters for the monitoring application. For example, placement of
sensors, frequency of sensing and transmission of those sensed data. Over the
years, the advancement in embedded technology has led to increased processing
power and memory capacity of these battery powered devices. However, batteries
can only supply limited energy, thus limiting the lifetime of the network. In
order to prolong the lifetime of the deployment, various efforts have been made
to improve the battery technologies and also reduce the energy consumption of
the sensor node at various layers in the networking stack. Of all the
operations in the network stack, wireless data transmission and reception have
found to consume most of the energy. Hence many proposals found in the
literature target reducing them through intelligent schemes like power control,
reducing retransmissions, etc. In this article we propose a new framework
called Virtual Sensing Framework (VSF), which aims to sufficiently satisfy

GP-Localize: Persistent Mobile Robot Localization using Online Sparse Gaussian Process Observation Model
Central to robot exploration and mapping is the task of persistent
localization in environmental fields characterized by spatially correlated
measurements. This paper presents a Gaussian process localization (GP-Localize)
algorithm that, in contrast to existing works, can exploit the spatially
correlated field measurements taken during a robot's exploration (instead of
relying on prior training data) for efficiently and scalably learning the GP
observation model online through our proposed novel online sparse GP. As a
result, GP-Localize is capable of achieving constant time and memory (i.e.,
independent of the size of the data) per filtering step, which demonstrates the
practical feasibility of using GPs for persistent robot localization and
autonomy. Empirical evaluation via simulated experiments with real-world
datasets and a real robot experiment shows that GP-Localize outperforms

Spatial snow water equivalent estimation for mountainous areas using wireless-sensor networks and remote-sensing products
We developed an approach to estimate snow water equivalent (SWE) through interpolation of spatially representative point measurements using a k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) algorithm and historical spatial SWE data. It accurately reproduced measured SWE, using different data sources for training and evaluation. In the central-Sierra American River basin, we used a k-NN algorithm to interpolate data from continuous snow-depth measurements in 10 sensor clusters by fusing them with 14 years of daily 500-m resolution SWE-reconstruction maps. Accurate SWE estimation over the melt season shows the potential for providing daily, near real-time distributed snowmelt estimates. Further south, in the Merced-Tuolumne basins, we evaluated the potential of k-NN approach to improve real-time SWE estimates. Lacking dense ground-measurement networks, we simulated k-NN interpolation of sensor data using selected pixels of a bi-weekly Lidar-derived snow water equivalent product. k-NN extrapolations underestimate the Lidar-derived SWE, with a maximum bias of −10 cm at elevations below 3000 m and +15 cm above 3000 m. This bias was reduced by using a Gaussian-process regression model to spatially distribute residuals. Using as few as 10 scenes of Lidar-derived SWE from 2014 as training data in the k-NN to estimate the 2016 spatial SWE, both RMSEs and MAEs were reduced from around 20–25 cm to 10–15 cm comparing to using SWE reconstructions as training data. We found that the spatial accuracy of the historical data is more important for learning the spatial distribution of SWE than the number of historical scenes available. Blending continuous spatially representative ground-based sensors with a historical library of SWE reconstructions over the same basin can provide real-time spatial SWE maps that accurately represents Lidar-measured snow depth; and the estimates can be improved by using historical Lidar scans instead of SWE reconstructions
DRASIC: Distributed Recurrent Autoencoder for Scalable Image Compression
We propose a new architecture for distributed image compression from a group
of distributed data sources. The work is motivated by practical needs of
data-driven codec design, low power consumption, robustness, and data privacy.
The proposed architecture, which we refer to as Distributed Recurrent
Autoencoder for Scalable Image Compression (DRASIC), is able to train
distributed encoders and one joint decoder on correlated data sources. Its
compression capability is much better than the method of training codecs
separately. Meanwhile, the performance of our distributed system with 10
distributed sources is only within 2 dB peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of
the performance of a single codec trained with all data sources. We experiment
distributed sources with different correlations and show how our data-driven
methodology well matches the Slepian-Wolf Theorem in Distributed Source Coding
