International audienceAutomatic acquisition of plant phenotypes constitutes a major bottleneck in the construction of quantitative models of plant development. This issue needs to be addressed to build accurate models of plant, useful for instance in agronomic and forestry applications. In this work, we present a method for reconstructing plant architecture from laser scanner data. A dedicated evaluation procedure based on a detailed comparison between expert and automatic reconstruction was developed to quantify accurately the quality of the reconstruction method

Generating 3D volumetric meshes of internal and external fruit structure

International audienceTwo essential functions in determining fruit quality are the transport and accumulation of water and dry matter to various fruit tissues. Since water and carbon are delivered to fruit tissues through a complex vasculature system, the internal fruit structure and pattern of vasculature may have a significant impact on their distribution within the fruit. The aim of this work is to provide methods for generating fruit structure that can be integrated with models of fruit function and used to investigate such effects. To this end, we have developed a modelling pipeline in the OpenAlea platform that involves two steps: (1) generating a 3D volumetric mesh representation of the entire fruit, and (2) generating a complex network of vasculature that is embedded within this mesh. To create the 3D volumetric mesh, we use reconstruction algorithms from the 3D mesh generation package of the Computational Geometry Algorithms Library. To generate the pattern of vasculature within this volumetric mesh, we use an algorithmic approach from PlantScan3D software that was designed to reconstruct tree architecture from laser scanner data. We have applied our modelling pipeline to generate the internal and external geometry of a cherry tomato fruit using Magnetic Resonance Imaging data as input. These kinds of applications of our pipeline demonstrate its ability to create species-specific models of fruit structure with relatively low effort. In another work, the volumetric meshes will be combined with models of function to form integrative computational fruit models, which will help to investigate the effects of fruit structure on quality

Rendering of Wind Effects in 3D Landscape Scenes

AbstractVisualization of 3D landscape scenes is often used in architectural modeling systems, realistic simulators, computer virtual reality, and other applications. Wind is a common spread natural effect without which any scene would be unrealistic. Three algorithms for tree rendering under changeable wind parameters were developed. They have a minimal computational cost and simulate weak wind; mid-force wind, and storm wind. A 3D landscape scene is formed from a set of trees models that are generated from laser data and templates of L-systems. The user can tune the wind parameters and manipulate a modeling scene by using the designed software tool

    Image-based tree variations

The automatic generation of realistic vegetation closely reproducing the appearance of specific plant species is still a challenging topic in computer graphics. In this paper, we present a new approach to generate new tree models from a small collection of frontal RGBA images of trees. The new models are represented either as single billboards (suitable for still image generation in areas such as architecture rendering) or as billboard clouds (providing parallax effects in interactive applications). Key ingredients of our method include the synthesis of new contours through convex combinations of exemplar countours, the automatic segmentation into crown/trunk classes and the transfer of RGBA colour from the exemplar images to the synthetic target. We also describe a fully automatic approach to convert a single tree image into a billboard cloud by extracting superpixels and distributing them inside a silhouette-defined 3D volume. Our algorithm allows for the automatic generation of an arbitrary number of tree variations from minimal input, and thus provides a fast solution to add vegetation variety in outdoor scenes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
