Monitoring wild animal communities with arrays of motion sensitive camera traps
Studying animal movement and distribution is of critical importance to
addressing environmental challenges including invasive species, infectious
diseases, climate and land-use change. Motion sensitive camera traps offer a
visual sensor to record the presence of a broad range of species providing
location -specific information on movement and behavior. Modern digital camera
traps that record video present new analytical opportunities, but also new data
management challenges. This paper describes our experience with a terrestrial
animal monitoring system at Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Our camera network
captured the spatio-temporal dynamics of terrestrial bird and mammal activity
at the site - data relevant to immediate science questions, and long-term
conservation issues. We believe that the experience gained and lessons learned
during our year long deployment and testing of the camera traps as well as the
developed solutions are applicable to broader sensor network applications and
are valuable for the advancement of the sensor network research. We suggest
that the continued development of these hardware, software, and analytical
tools, in concert, offer an exciting sensor-network solution to monitoring of
animal populations which could realistically scale over larger areas and time
spans
Data fusion in ubiquitous networked robot systems for urban services
There is a clear trend in the use of robots
to accomplish services that can help humans. In this
paper, robots acting in urban environments are considered
for the task of person guiding. Nowadays, it is
common to have ubiquitous sensors integrated within
the buildings, such as camera networks, and wireless
communications like 3G or WiFi. Such infrastructure
can be directly used by robotic platforms. The paper
shows how combining the information from the robots
and the sensors allows tracking failures to be overcome,
by being more robust under occlusion, clutter, and
lighting changes. The paper describes the algorithms
for tracking with a set of fixed surveillance cameras
and the algorithms for position tracking using the signal
strength received by a wireless sensor network (WSN).
Moreover, an algorithm to obtain estimations on the positions of people from cameras on board robots is
described. The estimate from all these sources are then
combined using a decentralized data fusion algorithm
to provide an increase in performance. This scheme is
scalable and can handle communication latencies and
failures. We present results of the system operating in
real time on a large outdoor environment, including 22

Automatic camera selection for activity monitoring in a multi-camera system for tennis
In professional tennis training matches, the coach needs to be able to view play from the most appropriate angle in order to monitor players' activities. In this paper, we describe and evaluate a system for automatic camera selection from a network of synchronised cameras within a tennis sporting arena. This work combines synchronised video streams from multiple cameras into a single summary video suitable for critical review by both tennis players and coaches. Using an overhead camera view, our system automatically determines the 2D tennis-court calibration resulting in a mapping that relates a player's position in the overhead camera to their position and size in another camera view in the network. This allows the system to determine the appearance of a player in each of the other cameras and thereby choose the best view for each player via a novel technique. The video summaries are evaluated in end-user studies and shown to provide an efficient means of multi-stream visualisation for tennis player activity monitoring
Smart Computing and Sensing Technologies for Animal Welfare: A Systematic Review
Animals play a profoundly important and intricate role in our lives today.
Dogs have been human companions for thousands of years, but they now work
closely with us to assist the disabled, and in combat and search and rescue
situations. Farm animals are a critical part of the global food supply chain,
and there is increasing consumer interest in organically fed and humanely
raised livestock, and how it impacts our health and environmental footprint.
Wild animals are threatened with extinction by human induced factors, and
shrinking and compromised habitat. This review sets the goal to systematically
survey the existing literature in smart computing and sensing technologies for
domestic, farm and wild animal welfare. We use the notion of \emph{animal
welfare} in broad terms, to review the technologies for assessing whether
animals are healthy, free of pain and suffering, and also positively stimulated
in their environment. Also the notion of \emph{smart computing and sensing} is
used in broad terms, to refer to computing and sensing systems that are not
isolated but interconnected with communication networks, and capable of remote
data collection, processing, exchange and analysis. We review smart
technologies for domestic animals, indoor and outdoor animal farming, as well
as animals in the wild and zoos. The findings of this review are expected to
motivate future research and contribute to data, information and communication
management as well as policy for animal welfare
Detection of visitors in elderly care using a low-resolution visual sensor network
Loneliness is a common condition associated with aging and comes with extreme health consequences including decline in physical and mental health, increased mortality and poor living conditions. Detecting and assisting lonely persons is therefore important-especially in the home environment. The current studies analyse the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) usually with the focus on persons living alone, e.g., to detect health deterioration. However, this type of data analysis relies on the assumption of a single person being analysed, and the ADL data analysis becomes less reliable without assessing socialization in seniors for health state assessment and intervention. In this paper, we propose a network of cheap low-resolution visual sensors for the detection of visitors. The visitor analysis starts by visual feature extraction based on foreground/background detection and morphological operations to track the motion patterns in each visual sensor. Then, we utilize the features of the visual sensors to build a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for the actual detection. Finally, a rule-based classifier is used to compute the number and the duration of visits. We evaluate our framework on a real-life dataset of ten months. Vehicle-Rear: A New Dataset to Explore Feature Fusion for Vehicle Identification Using Convolutional Neural Networks
This work addresses the problem of vehicle identification through
non-overlapping cameras. As our main contribution, we introduce a novel dataset
for vehicle identification, called Vehicle-Rear, that contains more than three
hours of high-resolution videos, with accurate information about the make,
model, color and year of nearly 3,000 vehicles, in addition to the position and
identification of their license plates. To explore our dataset we design a
two-stream CNN that simultaneously uses two of the most distinctive and
persistent features available: the vehicle's appearance and its license plate.
This is an attempt to tackle a major problem: false alarms caused by vehicles
with similar designs or by very close license plate identifiers. In the first
network stream, shape similarities are identified by a Siamese CNN that uses a
pair of low-resolution vehicle patches recorded by two different cameras. In
the second stream, we use a CNN for OCR to extract textual information,
confidence scores, and string similarities from a pair of high-resolution
license plate patches. Then, features from both streams are merged by a
sequence of fully connected layers for decision. In our experiments, we
compared the two-stream network against several well-known CNN architectures
using single or multiple vehicle features. The architectures, trained models,
