    Fountain coding with decoder side information

    In this contribution, we consider the application of Digital Fountain (DF) codes to the problem of data transmission when side information is available at the decoder. The side information is modelled as a "virtual" channel output when original information sequence is the input. For two cases of the system model, which model both the virtual and the actual transmission channel either as a binary erasure channel or as a binary input additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channel, we propose methods of enhancing the design of standard non-systematic DF codes by optimizing their output degree distribution based oil the side information assumption. In addition, a systematic Raptor design has been employed as a possible solution to the problem

    Geometry of Information Integration

    Information geometry is used to quantify the amount of information integration within multiple terminals of a causal dynamical system. Integrated information quantifies how much information is lost when a system is split into parts and information transmission between the parts is removed. Multiple measures have been proposed as a measure of integrated information. Here, we analyze four of the previously proposed measures and elucidate their relations from a viewpoint of information geometry. Two of them use dually flat manifolds and the other two use curved manifolds to define a split model. We show that there are hierarchical structures among the measures. We provide explicit expressions of these measures

    Copyright @ 2012 IEEEThe IEC Common Information Model (CIM) is recognized as a core standard, supporting electricity transmission system interoperability. Packages of UML classes make up its domain ontology to enable a standardised abstraction of network topology and proprietary power system models. Since the early days of its design, the CIM has grown to reflect the widening scope and detail of utility information use cases as the desire to interoperate between a greater number of systems has increased. The cyber-physical nature of the smart grid places even greater demand upon the CIM to model future scenarios for power system operation and management that are starting to arise. Recent developments of modern electricity networks have begun to implement electricity storage (ES) technologies to provide ancillary balancing services, useful to grid integration of large-scale renewable energy systems. In response to this we investigate modeling of grid-scale electricity storage, by drawing on information use cases for future smart grid operational scenarios at National Grid, the GB Transmission System Operator. We find current structures within the CIM do not accommodate the informational requirements associated with novel ES systems and propose extensions to address this requirement.This study is supported by the UK National Grid and Brunel Universit

    A GaN-based wireless power and information transmission method using Dual-frequency Programmed Harmonic Modulation

    Information transmission is often required in power transfer to implement control. In this paper, a Dual-Frequency Programmed Harmonic Modulation (DFPHM) method is proposed to transfer two frequencies carrying power and information with the single converter via a common inductive coil. The proposed method reduces the number of injection tightly coupled transformers used to transmit information, thereby simplifying the system structure and improving reliability. The performances of power and information transmission, and the method of information modulation and demodulation, as well as the principles of the control, are analyzed in detail. Then a simulation model is set up to verify the feasibility of the method. In addition, an experiment platform is established to verify that the single converter can transfer the power and information simultaneously via a common inductive coil without using tightly coupled transformers.Web of Science8498564984

    Stochastic modelling of energy harvesting for low power sensor nodes

    Battery lifetime is a key impediment to long-lasting low power sensor nodes. Energy or power harvesting mitigates the ependency on battery power, by converting ambient energy into electrical energy. This energy can then be used by the device for data collection and transmission. This paper proposes and analyses a queueing model to assess performance of such an energy harvesting sensor node. Accounting for energy harvesting, data collection and data transmission opportunities, the sensor node is modelled as a paired queueing system. The system has two queues, one representing accumulated energy and the other being the data queue. By means of some numerical examples, we investigate the energy-information trade-off

    We study the effects of unequal representation in the interest-group system on the degree of information transmission between a lobbyist and a policymaker. Employing a dynamic cheap-talk model in which the lobbyist cares instrumentally about his reputation for truthtelling, we show that the larger is the inequality, the less information can credibly be transmitted to the policymaker.
