Aggregate Employment Dynamics and (Partial) Labour Market Reforms
European labour markets have undergone several important innovations over the last three decades. Most countries have reformed their labour markets since the mid-1990s, with the liberalization of fixed-term contracts and temporary work agencies being the common elements to such reforms. This paper investigates the existence of a change in the dynamic behaviour of the aggregate employment for major European Union countries - France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. According to our results, partial labour market reforms have made the response of the aggregate employment to output shocks larger and quite comparable to that found for the UK - the most flexible labour market in Europe since the Thatcher reforms.labour market deregulation; dynamic responses
The present study assumes that, in a globalized world, the view of English as an international language and internationalization initiatives are essential to foster social capital and the circulation of academic production worldwide. The aim of this study is twofold: to offer a meta-summary analysis of some studies which investigated the internalization of Brazilian higher education carried out mostly in federal universities, and, based on this analysis, to draw considerations regarding the challenges faced by the Brazilian Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IFs) to go international. In order to do so, a meta-summary approach was used to appraise and synthesize the main findings of the five studies included in the synthesis. In addition, a semi-structured questionnaire was administered to two IFs representatives as an attempt to unveil which internationalization initiatives have been put into practice. Data of the questionnaire was analyzed qualitatively and a discussion is provided taking into account the nature of the programs and actions offered by these institutions to go international as well as the challenges they have faced so far. Living the American Dream? Second Generation Dominican High School Students in a Diverse Suburban Community
My dissertation examines second generation Dominican high school students and their parents in a diverse, middle-class suburb. At a moment when immigrant families are arriving directly to suburban locations, and the number of second generation immigrants in our public schools is growing, it is important to examine how they are making sense of their experiences in this new context. In my study, I consider how one sub-group of Latinx high school students, with at least one parent born in the Dominican Republic, are experiencing a new place. Specifically, I look at their experiences within their community, school and family influence their assimilation processes, their ideas about future success, and the role of education in reaching that success. I also explore how the parents’ experiences in this community inform their definitions of success for their children and the role that education plays in achieving it, and how those beliefs affect their children. I examine the parents’ accounts through in-depth interviews and the students’ accounts through pre and post in-depth interviews two years apart, as well as photo elicitation interviews.
I found that the location of this suburb, adjacent to an ethnic enclave, provides a context that supports the process of selective acculturation, whereby the students are learning English and American customs while also developing and maintaining their Dominican cultural practices, including speaking Spanish. I also uncovered nuances to their understanding of the role of education in securing future success, through the use of open-ended questions. I found that the students with college-educated parents were more cautious about believing in the American Dream, and the idea that education guarantees success. Despite this, all of the families in the study approached education in similar ways, a style typically attributed to low-income families. And lastly, I found that the families lacked the social and cultural capital to gain educational advantages, specifically in the college application process. My study challenges the assumption that immigrant families arriving to middle-class suburbs are equipped to take advantage of the resources that their place of residence can afford them. Living in this type of place signals an achievement of the American Dream, but we have to question whether their children will be able to maintain it
Philanthropic classism: Americanization as a controversial rite of passage in Anzia Yezirska's fiction
At the turn of the nineteenth century, eastern European Jewish
families migrated to America aspiring to fulfil the discourses of
upward mobility and religious tolerance widely spread throughout
their Russian villages. The Polish-born American writer Anzia
Yezierska offers unique sketches of what became one of the most
controversial experiences of such a journey: the cultural clash
between the already Americanized German Jewish elite and the
newly-arrived Russian Jewish women. To gain access to the public
space, Yezierska’s characters seek social acknowledgement by going
through a rite of passage surveilled by German Jewish ladies, who
had formerly arrived in the United States. Although the process of
Americanization becomes apparently attainable through American
philanthropic programs and charity institutions, Yezierska shows
how their Americanizing strategies and the models of America n
femininity advertised in the period eventually failed to succeed. By
developing a hybrid identity, Russian Jewish characters manage to
legitimate their cultural differences inside the urban public spaces
and beyond the Lower East Side context.
migrado a Estados Unidos décadas antes.
feminidad estadounidense finalmente fracasan.
Challenges Of Intersectionality In Gender, Science And Technology

Representation of a sustainable city: the example on practice of urban planning in the rivers and estuaries borders in the City of Recife
7 p.International audienceIn the search for the sustainable city, the relation between protection of waters and the occupation of its borders gain privileged space in the urban planning. However, speech and practice do not always walk together. In the city of Recife, Northeast of Brazil, the new public lines on the use of the borders of the rivers is a good example of the danger of the vulgarization of the term of sustainable development. The project of eradication of the precarious habitations on water considers the withdrawal of the families who inhabit wooden houses on stilts in these places and the restoration of the marginal zones. The local authorities legitimize such project alleging to act by the means of sustainable development; moreover, the real environmental impact in the area is rarely taken into consideration. Although the eminent risk of flood, it is from the rivers and swamps that this population takes off its sustenance
