    Effect of Values and Technology Use on Exercise: Implications for Personalized Behavior Change Interventions

    Technology has recently been recruited in the war against the ongoing obesity crisis; however, the adoption of Health & Fitness applications for regular exercise is a struggle. In this study, we present a unique demographically representative dataset of 15k US residents that combines technology use logs with surveys on moral views, human values, and emotional contagion. Combining these data, we provide a holistic view of individuals to model their physical exercise behavior. First, we show which values determine the adoption of Health & Fitness mobile applications, finding that users who prioritize the value of purity and de-emphasize values of conformity, hedonism, and security are more likely to use such apps. Further, we achieve a weighted AUROC of .673 in predicting whether individual exercises, and we also show that the application usage data allows for substantially better classification performance (.608) compared to using basic demographics (.513) or internet browsing data (.546). We also find a strong link of exercise to respondent socioeconomic status, as well as the value of happiness. Using these insights, we propose actionable design guidelines for persuasive technologies targeting health behavior modification

    A comparative study on the benefits and challenges of the application of mobile technology in health

    Background: The application of mobile technology in the health domain i.e mobile health (mhealth) commonly refers to the use of mobile telecommunication and multi-media technologies for providing health services and public health systems. Some scholars consider mobile health as a subsystem of health technology which, due to the existing conditions, has become more significant compared to other interventions in this field. The present study intends to investigate the global approach on mobile health technology on the one hand, and its benefits and challenges on the other. Materials and Methods: As a comparative-descriptive study conducted in 2011, the present study has tried to explore mhealth technology strategies in public health domain, different types of mhealth interventions and benefits of using mhealth as well as its challenges and obstacles. The data were collected through informational sources such as articles, books, magazines and valid websites. Then, the status of the countries were compared and analyzed as far as the development of this technology is concened. Results:Based on the findings of the study, one of the criteria affecting the development of mhealth is the high penetration of mobile phone. By October, 2011, the estimated number of mobile users has been over 5 billion showing a penetration coefficient of 76. The review of the research on the obstacles and challenges experienced in moving towards the development of this technology by World Health Organization revealed that prioritization and increasing knowledge level are the most significant obstacles in the way to develop this technology. Discussions: Mhealth technology has been provided in most countries with the aim of promoting public health and accelerating the supply of health services. Having a penetration coefficient of over 90 in Iran, it can be predicted that this country can take effective steps towards development of this technology

    Promoting Health for Chronic Conditions: a Novel Approach that integrates Clinical and Personal Decision Support

    Direct and indirect economic costs related to chronic diseases are increasing in Europe due to the aging of population. One of the most challenging goals is to improve the quality of life of patients affected by chronic conditions, and enhance their self-management. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of a scalable solution, based on mobile tools, aimed to keep patients with chronic diseases away from acute episodes, to improve their quality of life and, consequently, to reduce their economic impact. Our solution aims to provide patients with a personalized tool for improving self-management, and it supports both patients and clinicians in decision-making through the implementation of two different Decision Support Systems. Moreover, the proposed architecture takes into account the interoperability and, particularly, the compliance with data transfer protocols (e.g., BT4/LE, ANT+, ISO/IEEE 11073) to ensure integration with existing devices, and with the semantic web approaches and standards related to the content and structure of the information (e.g., HL7, ICD-10 and openEHR) to ensure correct sharing of information with hospital information systems, and classification of patient behaviors (Coelition). The solution will be implemented and validated in future study

    Diabetes is a chronic and debilitating disease, which is associated with a range of complications putting tremendous burden on medical, economic and socio-technological infrastructure globally. Yet the higher authorities of health services are facing the excruciating cumulative reasons of diabetes as a very imperative worldwide issue in the 21st century. The study aims to relook at the misapplication of the processed radio frequency that frailties in the pancreas within and around the personal body boundary area. The administered sensor data were obtained at laboratory experiments from the selected specimens on dogs and cats in light and dark environments. The study shows the frequent urine flow speed varies with sudden infection due to treated wireless sensor networks in active open eyes. The overweight and obese persons are increasingly affected in diabetes with comprehensive urinary pressure due to continuous staying at dark environment. The findings replicate the increasing tide of diabetes globally. The study also represents the difficulties of physicians to provide adequate diabetic management according to their expectancy due to insecure personal area network control unit.Dynamic sensor network is indispensable for healthcare but such network is at risk to health security due to digitalized poisoning within GPS positions. The study recommends the anti-radiation integrated system policy with user’s security alternative approach to inspire dealing with National Health Policy and Sustainable Development Goals 2030

    Enhancing behavioural changes: a narrative review on the effectiveness of a multifactorial APP-based intervention integrating physical activity

    The rapid evolution of technologies is a key innovation in the organisation and management of physical activities (PA) and sports. The increase in benefits and opportunities related to the adoption of technologies for both the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and the management of chronic diseases is evident. In the field of telehealth, these devices provide personalised recommendations, workout monitoring and injury prevention. The study aimed to provide an overview of the landscape of technology application to PA organised to promote active lifestyles and improve chronic disease management. This review identified specific areas of focus for the selection of articles: the utilisation of mobile APPs and technological devices for enhancing weight loss, improving cardiovascular health, managing diabetes and cancer and preventing osteoporosis and cognitive decline. A multifactorial intervention delivered via mobile APPs, which integrates PA while managing diet or promoting social interaction, is unquestionably more effective than a singular intervention. The main finding related to promoting PA and a healthy lifestyle through app usage is associated with "behaviour change techniques". Even when individuals stop using the APP, they often maintain the structured or suggested lifestyle habits initially provided by the APP. Various concerns regarding the excessive use of APPs need to be addressed
