    A survey and tutorial of electromagnetic radiation and reduction in mobile communication systems

    This paper provides a survey and tutorial of electromagnetic (EM) radiation exposure and reduction in mobile communication systems. EM radiation exposure has received a fair share of interest in the literature; however, this work is one of the first to compile the most interesting results and ideas related to EM exposure in mobile communication systems and present possible ways of reducing it. We provide a comprehensive survey of existing literature and also offer a tutorial on the dosimetry, metrics, international projects as well as guidelines and limits on the exposure from EM radiation in mobile communication systems. Based on this survey and given that EM radiation exposure is closely linked with specific absorption rate (SAR) and transmit power usage, we propose possible techniques for reducing EM radiation exposure in mobile communication systems by exploring known concepts related to SAR and transmit power reduction in mobile systems. Thus, this paper serves as an introductory guide to EM radiation exposure in mobile communication systems and provides insights toward the design of future low-EM exposure mobile communication networks

    Antenna technology for advanced mobile communication systems

    The onboard antenna front end is the key subsystem conditioning configuration and performance of mobile communication satellites. The objectives of this paper are to demonstrate this key role and to review L-band satellite antenna technology for earth coverage and regional applications. Multibeam arrays are first discussed, then unfurlable and inflatable reflector antennas are described. These technologies are now qualified in Europe for future mobile systems, for which the optimum choice of antenna technology has been found to be the key to efficient use of spectrum and power resources

    The usage of mobile communication systems in the trucking industry

    This article reports the findings of a mobile communications survey mailed out to over 2,000 trucking firms. The findings indicate that 68% of respondents use some form of mobile communication system in their firm. Various types of mobile communication systems were reported, including two-way pagers, one-way pagers, cell phones, two-way radio, and satellite communications. Additionally, implementation decision factors for mobile communication systems were evaluated for both users and non-users of mobile communication systems

    Hypergraph Models for Cellular Mobile Communication Systems

    Cellular systems have hitherto been modeled mostly by graphs for the purpose of channel assignment. However, hypergraph modeling of cellular systems offers a significant advantage over graph modeling in terms of the total traffic carried by the system. For example, we show that a 37-cell system when modeled by a hypergraph carries around 30% more traffic than when modeled by a graph. We study the performance of channelized cellular systems modeled by hypergraphs in comparison with those modeled by graphs. For this purpose, we have evaluated the capacities of these cellular networks defined [3]. Evaluation of the capacity necessitates generation of maximal independent sets of hypergraphs. We describe some new algorithms that we have developed for this purpose

    Large deviations for eigenvalues of sample covariance matrices, with applications to mobile communication systems

    We study sample covariance matrices of the form W=1nCCTW=\frac 1n C C^T, where CC is a k×nk\times n matrix with i.i.d. mean zero entries. This is a generalization of so-called Wishart matrices, where the entries of CC are independent and identically distributed standard normal random variables. Such matrices arise in statistics as sample covariance matrices, and the high-dimensional case, when kk is large, arises in the analysis of DNA experiments. We investigate the large deviation properties of the largest and smallest eigenvalues of WW when either kk is fixed and nn\to \infty, or knk_n\to \infty with kn=o(n/loglogn)k_n=o(n/\log\log{n}), in the case where the squares of the i.i.d. entries have finite exponential moments. Previous results, proving a.s. limits of the eigenvalues, only require finite fourth moments. Our most explicit results for kk large are for the case where the entries of CC are ±1\pm1 with equal probability. We relate the large deviation rate functions of the smallest and largest eigenvalue to the rate functions for independent and identically distributed standard normal entries of CC. This case is of particular interest, since it is related to the problem of the decoding of a signal in a code division multiple access system arising in mobile communication systems. In this example, kk plays the role of the number of users in the system, and nn is the length of the coding sequence of each of the users. Each user transmits at the same time and uses the same frequency, and the codes are used to distinguish the signals of the separate users.     Energy and environmental aspects of mobile communication systems

    The reduction of the energy consumptions of a Telecommunication Power System represents one of the critical factors of the telecommunication technologies, both to allow a sizeable saving of economic resources and to realize "sustainable" development actions. The consumption of about one hundred base stations for mobile phones were monitored for a total of over one thousand days, in order to study the energy consumption in relation to the environmental, electric and logistics parameters of the stations themselves. It was possible to survey, then, the role of the mobile communication systems in the general national energy framework and to plot the best areas of intervention for saving energy and improving the environmental impact, showing the role played by air conditioning and transmission equipments. Finally, new transmission algorithms and the use of renewable energy based techniques have been tested.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
