    Mobile application platform heterogeneity: Android vs Windows phone vs iOS vs Firefox OS

    Modern smartphones have a rich spectrum of increasingly sophisticated features, opening opportunities for software-led innovation. Of the large number of platforms to develop new software on, in this paper we look closely at three platforms identified as market leaders for the smartphone market by Gartner Group in 2013 and one platform, Firefox OS, representing a new paradigm for operating systems based on web technologies. We compare the platforms in several different categories, such as software architecture, application development, platform capabilities and constraints, and, finally, developer support. Using the implementation of a mobile version of the tic-tac-toe game on all the four platforms, we seek to investigate strengths, weaknesses and challenges of mobile application development on these platforms. Big differences are highlighted when inspecting community environments, hardware abilities and platform maturity. These inevitably impact upon developer choices when deciding on mobile platform development strategies

    Ubiquity and reusability are key factors in driving the deployment of content. Up to now these elements have been challenges within mobile learning. However, with the advent of metadata structures, new technologies and mobile platforms, ubiquity and reusability are becoming a reality. It is important when introducing new learning platforms such as mobile learning that money and time is not spent creating complex ways to extract material that is already available in legacy systems. Learning is moving from being teacher centric to learner centric. Ericsson is in the transitional phase, moving towards Personal Learning Environments whereby students will learn on the platforms which best support their learning styles.     Migrating C/C++ Software to Mobile Platforms in the ADM Context

    Software technology is constantly evolving and therefore the development of applications requires adapting software components and applications in order to be aligned to new paradigms such as Pervasive Computing, Cloud Computing and Internet of Things. In particular, many desktop software components need to be migrated to mobile technologies. This migration faces many challenges due to the proliferation of different mobile platforms. Developers usually make applications tailored for each type of device expending time and effort. As a result, new programming languages are emerging to integrate the native behaviors of the different platforms targeted in development projects. In this direction, the Haxe language allows writing mobile applications that target all major mobile platforms. Novel technical frameworks for information integration and tool interoperability such as Architecture-Driven Modernization (ADM) proposed by the Object Management Group (OMG) can help to manage a huge diversity of mobile technologies. The Architecture-Driven Modernization Task Force (ADMTF) was formed to create specifications and promote industry consensus on the modernization of existing applications. In this work, we propose a migration process from C/C++ software to different mobile platforms that integrates ADM standards with Haxe. We exemplify the different steps of the process with a simple case study, the migration of “the Set of Mandelbrot” C++ application. The proposal was validated in Eclipse Modeling Framework considering that some of its tools and run-time environments are aligned with ADM standards

    Evaluating usability of cross-platform smartphone applications

    The computing power of smartphones is increasing as time goes. However, the proliferation of multiple different types of operating platforms affected interoperable smartphone applications development. Thus, the cross-platform development tools are coined. Literature showed that smartphone applications developed with the native platforms have better user experience than the cross-platform counterparts. However, comparative evaluation of usability of cross-platform applications on the deployment platforms is not studied yet. In this work, we evaluated usability of a crossword puzzle developed with PhoneGap on Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. The evaluation was conducted focusing on the developer's adaptation effort to native platforms and the end users. Thus, we observed that usability of the cross-platform crossword puzzle is unaffected on the respective native platforms and the SDKs require only minimal configuration effort. In addition, we observed the prospect of HTML5 and related web technologies as our future work towards evaluating and enhancing usability in composing REST-based services for smartphone applications

    Resource allocation in mobile edge cloud computing for data-intensive applications

    Rapid advancement in the mobile telecommunications industry has motivated the development of mobile applications in a wide range of social and scientific domains. However, mobile computing (MC) platforms still have several constraints, such as limited computation resources, short battery life and high sensitivity to network capabilities. In order to overcome the limitations of mobile computing and benefit from the huge advancement in mobile telecommunications and the rapid revolution of distributed resources, mobile-aware computing models, such as mobile cloud computing (MCC) and mobile edge computing (MEC) have been proposed. The main problem is to decide on an application execution plan while satisfying quality of service (QoS) requirements and the current status of system networking and device energy. However, the role of application data in offloading optimisation has not been studied thoroughly, particularly with respect to how data size and distribution impact application offloading. This problem can be referred to as data-intensive mobile application offloading optimisation. To address this problem, this thesis presents novel optimisation frameworks, techniques and algorithms for mobile application resource allocation in mobile-aware computing environments. These frameworks and techniques are proposed to provide optimised solutions to schedule data intensive mobile applications. Experimental results show the ability of the proposed tools in optimising the scheduling and the execution of data intensive applications on various computing environments to meet application QoS requirements. Furthermore, the results clearly stated the significant contribution of the data size parameter on scheduling the execution of mobile applications. In addition, the thesis provides an analytical investigation of mobile-aware computing environments for a certain mobile application type. The investigation provides performance analysis to help users decide on target computation resources based on application structure, input data, and mobile network status
