    Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de CiĂȘncias e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para a obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia InformĂĄtica.The widespread use of smaller, less expensive, and more capable mobile devices, has opened the door for more complex and varied mobile computing applications. Additionally, manufacturers are increasingly equipping these handheld devices with every type of wireless connectivity and sensors that can be explored for providing more complex services. In recent years, several techniques for location estimation have been developed, providing different degrees of accuracy. Some of these solutions require the installation of specific hardware in the environment, while others explore the existing infrastructure. In particular, it is possible to explore the existing communication infrastructure to build a location system relying on signal strength measures. However, while several systems already exist to locate users based on different approaches, there is no single one that is good for every situation while providing high accuracy, low cost and ubiquitous coverage. Not only that, but very few research has been made regarding on how a group of users can cooperate to improve accuracy or reduce energy consumption while using the location system. This work presents the Unified Cooperative Location System, a modular and extensible location system. Its modular design can use every available technology on each device and different algorithms for location estimation. This approach allows to provide location services with high availability by relying on different technologies. It also allows to reduce the energy consumption on devices by sharing the responsibility of executing energy-heavy operations. The system also includes an information exchange mechanism, allowing devices to gather location information from nearby users, like GPS or Wi-Fi, which would otherwise be unavailable for some. The results of our experiences show that the possibility of exchanging GSM information provides a practical solution for location estimation based on multiple GSM signals, thus significantly increasing location accuracy with this technology

    An Efficient Approach Formulation of Social Groups of User Calls of GSM

    We are living in a world of wireless technology. The most widely used wireless i.e. mobile computing device today is the Mobile phone, can be used not only for voice and data communications but also as a computing device running context aware applications. In this paper we present a model that based on GSM data base. The objective of this paper identifies social and suspicious groups based on Cell Id, IMSI, IMEI, date and time, Location Area, MCC and MNC. This information can be used by applications for the detection of users, user context, discovering of groups and relation between them using clustering technique of data mining. One of the vital means in dealing with these data is to classify or group them into a set of categories or clusters. We demonstrate that even without knowledge of observed cell tower locations, we can recognize mobility modes that are useful for several application domains.     The digital ‘connected’ earth: open technology for providing location-based services on degraded communication environments

    In the current world, it is easy to listen that everybody and everything is connected. Over this connected world, the concept of location-based services has grown in order to provide digital services in everyplace and at every time. Nevertheless, this is not 100% true because the connection is not guaranteed for many people and in many places. These are the Degraded Communications Environments (DCE), environments where the availability of high-speed communications is not guaranteed in at least the 75% of the time. This paper works over the experience of a previous work in developing light protocols that do not need broadband for communication. This work provides an extension of these protocols for the inclusion of mobile devices as elements of the communication process and a set of libraries to allow the development of applications in DCE. The work done has involved the development of two frameworks: an Android framework that makes the incorporation of Android devices easier and a server-based framework that provides the server side for the development of the referred applications. A use case that uses these two frameworks has been developed. Finally, all technology developed is available throw a public Git repository

    Mobile networks and internet of things infrastructures to characterize smart human mobility

    The evolution of Mobile Networks and Internet of Things (IoT) architectures allows one to rethink the way smart cities infrastructures are designed and managed, and solve a number of problems in terms of human mobility. The territories that adopt the sensoring era can take advantage of this disruptive technology to improve the quality of mobility of their citizens and the rationalization of their resources. However, with this rapid development of smart terminals and infrastructures, as well as the proliferation of diversified applications, even current networks may not be able to completely meet quickly rising human mobility demands. Thus, they are facing many challenges and to cope with these challenges, different standards and projects have been proposed so far. Accordingly, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been utilized as a new paradigm for the design and optimization of mobile networks with a high level of intelligence. The objective of this work is to identify and discuss the challenges of mobile networks, alongside IoT and AI, to characterize smart human mobility and to discuss some workable solutions to these challenges.     Multimodal Content Delivery for Geo-services

    This thesis describes a body of work carried out over several research projects in the area of multimodal interaction for location-based services. Research in this area has progressed from using simulated mobile environments to demonstrate the visual modality, to the ubiquitous delivery of rich media using multimodal interfaces (geo- services). To effectively deliver these services, research focused on innovative solutions to real-world problems in a number of disciplines including geo-location, mobile spatial interaction, location-based services, rich media interfaces and auditory user interfaces. My original contributions to knowledge are made in the areas of multimodal interaction underpinned by advances in geo-location technology and supported by the proliferation of mobile device technology into modern life. Accurate positioning is a known problem for location-based services, contributions in the area of mobile positioning demonstrate a hybrid positioning technology for mobile devices that uses terrestrial beacons to trilaterate position. Information overload is an active concern for location-based applications that struggle to manage large amounts of data, contributions in the area of egocentric visibility that filter data based on field-of-view demonstrate novel forms of multimodal input. One of the more pertinent characteristics of these applications is the delivery or output modality employed (auditory, visual or tactile). Further contributions in the area of multimodal content delivery are made, where multiple modalities are used to deliver information using graphical user interfaces, tactile interfaces and more notably auditory user interfaces. It is demonstrated how a combination of these interfaces can be used to synergistically deliver context sensitive rich media to users - in a responsive way - based on usage scenarios that consider the affordance of the device, the geographical position and bearing of the device and also the location of the device
