    Quality of Service (QoS) is a key issue in a multimedia environment because multimedia applications are sensitive to delay. The virtual bus architecture is a hierarchical access network structure that has been proposed to simplify network signaling. The network employs an interconnection of hierarchical database to support advanced routing of the signaling and traffic load. Therefore, the requirements and management of quality of service is important in the virtual bus network particularly to support multimedia applications.     Transform-domain analysis of packet delay in network nodes with QoS-aware scheduling

    In order to differentiate the perceived QoS between traffic classes in heterogeneous packet networks, equipment discriminates incoming packets based on their class, particularly in the way queued packets are scheduled for further transmission. We review a common stochastic modelling framework in which scheduling mechanisms can be evaluated, especially with regard to the resulting per-class delay distribution. For this, a discrete-time single-server queue is considered with two classes of packet arrivals, either delay-sensitive (1) or delay-tolerant (2). The steady-state analysis relies on the use of well-chosen supplementary variables and is mainly done in the transform domain. Secondly, we propose and analyse a new type of scheduling mechanism that allows precise control over the amount of delay differentiation between the classes. The idea is to introduce N reserved places in the queue, intended for future arrivals of class 1

    On Money as a Means of Coordination between Network Packets

    In this work, we apply a common economic tool, namely money, to coordinate network packets. In particular, we present a network economy, called PacketEconomy, where each flow is modeled as a population of rational network packets, and these packets can self-regulate their access to network resources by mutually trading their positions in router queues. Every packet of the economy has its price, and this price determines if and when the packet will agree to buy or sell a better position. We consider a corresponding Markov model of trade and show that there are Nash equilibria (NE) where queue positions and money are exchanged directly between the network packets. This simple approach, interestingly, delivers improvements even when fiat money is used. We present theoretical arguments and experimental results to support our claims

    Modelling Load Balancing and Carrier Aggregation in Mobile Networks

    In this paper, we study the performance of multicarrier mobile networks. Specifically, we analyze the flow-level performance of two inter-carrier load balancing schemes and the gain engendered by Carrier Aggregation (CA). CA is one of the most important features of HSPA+ and LTE-A networks; it allows devices to be served simultaneously by several carriers. We propose two load balancing schemes, namely Join the Fastest Queue (JFQ) and Volume Balancing (VB), that allow the traffic of CA and non-CA users to be distributed over the aggregated carriers. We then evaluate the performance of these schemes by means of analytical modeling. We show that the proposed schemes achieve quasi-ideal load balancing. We also investigate the impact of mixing traffic of CA and non-CA users in the same cell and show that performance is practically insensitive to the traffic mix.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to WiOpt201

    A Holistic Approach to Functional Safety for Networked Cyber-Physical Systems

    Functional safety is a significant concern in today's networked cyber-physical systems such as connected machines, autonomous vehicles, and intelligent environments. Simulation is a well-known methodology for the assessment of functional safety. Simulation models of networked cyber-physical systems are very heterogeneous relying on digital hardware, analog hardware, and network domains. Current functional safety assessment is mainly focused on digital hardware failures while minor attention is devoted to analog hardware and not at all to the interconnecting network. In this work we believe that in networked cyber-physical systems, the dependability must be verified not only for the nodes in isolation but also by taking into account their interaction through the communication channel. For this reason, this work proposes a holistic methodology for simulation-based safety assessment in which safety mechanisms are tested in a simulation environment reproducing the high-level behavior of digital hardware, analog hardware, and network communication. The methodology relies on three main automatic processes: 1) abstraction of analog models to transform them into system-level descriptions, 2) synthesis of network infrastructures to combine multiple cyber-physical systems, and 3) multi-domain fault injection in digital, analog, and network. Ultimately, the flow produces a homogeneous optimized description written in C++ for fast and reliable simulation which can have many applications. The focus of this thesis is performing extensive fault simulation and evaluating different functional safety metrics, \eg, fault and diagnostic coverage of all the safety mechanisms

    Performance evaluation of multicast networks and service differentiation mechanisms in IP networks

    The performance of a communication network depends on how well the network is designed in terms of delivering the level of service required by a given type of traffic. The field of teletraffic theory is concerned with quantifying the three-way relationship between the network, its level of service and the traffic arriving at the network. In this thesis, we study three different problems concerning this three-way relationship and present models to assist in designing and dimensioning networks to satisfy the different quality of service demands. In the first part of the thesis, we consider service differentiation mechanisms in packet-switched IP networks implementing a Differentiated Services (DiffServ) architecture. We study how bandwidth can be divided in a weighted fair manner between persistent elastic TCP flows, and between these TCP flows and streaming real-time UDP flows. To this end, we model the traffic conditioning and scheduling mechanisms on the packet and the flow level. We also model the interaction of these DiffServ mechanisms with the TCP congestion control mechanism and present closed-loop models for the sending rate of a TCP flow that reacts to congestion signals from the network. In the second part, we concentrate on non-persistent elastic TCP traffic in IP networks and study how flows can be differentiated in terms of mean delay by giving priority to flows based on their age. We study Multi Level Processor Sharing (MLPS) disciplines, where jobs are classified into levels based on their age or attained service. Between levels, a strict priority discipline is applied; the level containing the youngest jobs has the highest priority. Inside a particular level, any scheduling discipline could be used. We present an implementation proposal of a two-level discipline, PS+PS, with the Processor Sharing discipline used inside both levels. We prove that, as long as the hazard rate of the job-size distribution is decreasing, which is the case for Internet traffic, PS+PS, and any MLPS discipline that favors young jobs, is better than PS with respect to overall mean delay. In the final part, we study distribution-type streaming traffic in a multicast network, where there is, at most, one copy of each channel transmission in each network link, and quantify the blocking probability. We derive an exact blocking probability algorithm for multicast traffic in a tree network based on the convolution and truncation algorithm for unicast traffic. We present a new convolution operation, the OR-convolution, to suit the transmission principle of multicast traffic, and a new truncation operator to take into account the case of having both unicast and multicast traffic in the network.
