    Fast ALS-based tensor factorization for context-aware recommendation from implicit feedback

    Albeit, the implicit feedback based recommendation problem - when only the user history is available but there are no ratings - is the most typical setting in real-world applications, it is much less researched than the explicit feedback case. State-of-the-art algorithms that are efficient on the explicit case cannot be straightforwardly transformed to the implicit case if scalability should be maintained. There are few if any implicit feedback benchmark datasets, therefore new ideas are usually experimented on explicit benchmarks. In this paper, we propose a generic context-aware implicit feedback recommender algorithm, coined iTALS. iTALS apply a fast, ALS-based tensor factorization learning method that scales linearly with the number of non-zero elements in the tensor. The method also allows us to incorporate diverse context information into the model while maintaining its computational efficiency. In particular, we present two such context-aware implementation variants of iTALS. The first incorporates seasonality and enables to distinguish user behavior in different time intervals. The other views the user history as sequential information and has the ability to recognize usage pattern typical to certain group of items, e.g. to automatically tell apart product types or categories that are typically purchased repetitively (collectibles, grocery goods) or once (household appliances). Experiments performed on three implicit datasets (two proprietary ones and an implicit variant of the Netflix dataset) show that by integrating context-aware information with our factorization framework into the state-of-the-art implicit recommender algorithm the recommendation quality improves significantly.Comment: Accepted for ECML/PKDD 2012, presented on 25th September 2012, Bristol, U

    THOR: A Hybrid Recommender System for the Personalized Travel Experience

    One of the travelers’ main challenges is that they have to spend a great effort to find and choose the most desired travel offer(s) among a vast list of non-categorized and non-personalized items. Recommendation systems provide an effective way to solve the problem of information overload. In this work, we design and implement “The Hybrid Offer Ranker” (THOR), a hybrid, personalized recommender system for the transportation domain. THOR assigns every traveler a unique contextual preference model built using solely their personal data, which makes the model sensitive to the user’s choices. This model is used to rank travel offers presented to each user according to their personal preferences. We reduce the recommendation problem to one of binary classification that predicts the probability with which the traveler will buy each available travel offer. Travel offers are ranked according to the computed probabilities, hence to the user’s personal preference model. Moreover, to tackle the cold start problem for new users, we apply clustering algorithms to identify groups of travelers with similar profiles and build a preference model for each group. To test the system’s performance, we generate a dataset according to some carefully designed rules. The results of the experiments show that the THOR tool is capable of learning the contextual preferences of each traveler and ranks offers starting from those that have the higher probability of being selected

    A Survey of Location Prediction on Twitter

    Locations, e.g., countries, states, cities, and point-of-interests, are central to news, emergency events, and people's daily lives. Automatic identification of locations associated with or mentioned in documents has been explored for decades. As one of the most popular online social network platforms, Twitter has attracted a large number of users who send millions of tweets on daily basis. Due to the world-wide coverage of its users and real-time freshness of tweets, location prediction on Twitter has gained significant attention in recent years. Research efforts are spent on dealing with new challenges and opportunities brought by the noisy, short, and context-rich nature of tweets. In this survey, we aim at offering an overall picture of location prediction on Twitter. Specifically, we concentrate on the prediction of user home locations, tweet locations, and mentioned locations. We first define the three tasks and review the evaluation metrics. By summarizing Twitter network, tweet content, and tweet context as potential inputs, we then structurally highlight how the problems depend on these inputs. Each dependency is illustrated by a comprehensive review of the corresponding strategies adopted in state-of-the-art approaches. In addition, we also briefly review two related problems, i.e., semantic location prediction and point-of-interest recommendation.     A Framework for Exploiting Internet of Things for Context-Aware Trust-based Personalized Services

    In the last years, we have witnessed the introduction of Internet of Things as an integral part of the Internet with billions of interconnected and addressable everyday objects. On the one hand, these objects generate massive volume of data that can be exploited to gain useful insights into our day-to-day needs. On the other hand, context-aware recommender systems (CARSs) are intelligent systems that assist users to make service consumption choices that satisfy their preferences based on their contextual situations. However, one of the major challenges in developing CARSs is the lack of functionality providing dynamic and reliable context information required by the recommendation decision process based on the objects that users interact with in their environments. Thus, contextual information obtained from IoT objects and other sources can be exploited to build CARSs that satisfy users’ preferences, improve quality of experience and recommendation accuracy. This article describes various components of a conceptual IoT based framework for context-aware personalized recommendations. The framework addresses the weakness whereby CARSs rely on static and limited contextual information from user’s mobile phone, by providing additional components for reliable and dynamic contextual information, using IoT context sources. The core of the framework consists of context recognition and reasoning management, dynamic user profile model incorporating trust to improve accuracy of context-aware personalized recommendations.     A multidisciplinary research approach to energy-related behavior in buildings

    Occupant behavior in buildings is one of the key drivers of building energy performance. Closing the “performance gap” in the building sector requires a deeper understanding and consideration of the “human factor” in energy usage. For Europe and US to meet their challenging 2020 and 2050 energy and GHG reduction goals, we need to harness the potential savings of human behavior in buildings, in addition to deployment of energy efficient technologies and energy policies for buildings. Through involvement in international projects such as IEA ECBC Annex 53 and EBC Annex 66, the research conducted in the context of this thesis provided significant contributions to understand occupants’ interactions with building systems and to reduce their energy use in residential and commercial buildings over the entire building life cycle. The primary goal of this Ph.D. study is to explore and highlight the human factor in energy use as a fundamental aspect influencing the energy performance of buildings and maximizing energy efficiency – to the same extent as technological innovation. Scientific literature was reviewed to understand state-of-the-art gaps and limitations of research in the field. Human energy-related behavior in buildings emerges a stochastic and highly complex problem, which cannot be solved by one discipline alone. Typically, a technological-social dichotomy pertains to the human factor in reducing energy use in buildings. Progressing past that, this research integrates occupant behavior in a multidisciplinary approach that combines insights from the technical, analytical and social dimension. This is achieved by combining building physics (occupant behavior simulation in building energy models to quantify impact on building performance) and data science (data mining, analytics, modeling and profiling of behavioral patterns in buildings) with behavioral theories (engaging occupants and motivating energy-saving occupant behaviors) to provide multidisciplinary, innovative insights on human-centered energy efficiency in buildings. The systematic interconnection of these three dimensions is adopted at different scales. The building system is observed at the residential and commercial level. Data is gathered, then analyzed, modeled, standardized and simulated from the zone to the building level, up to the district scale. Concerning occupant behavior, this research focuses on individual, group and collective actions. Various stakeholders can benefit from this Ph.D. dissertation results. Audience of the research includes energy modelers, architects, HVAC engineers, operators, owners, policymakers, building technology vendors, as well as simulation program designers, implementers and evaluators. The connection between these different levels, research foci and targeted audience is not linear among the three observed systems. Rather, the multidisciplinary research approach to energy-related behavior in buildings proposed by this Ph.D. study has been adopted to explore solutions that could overcome the limitations and shortcomings in the state-of-the-art research

    Generating Recommendations From Multiple Data Sources: A Methodological Framework for System Design and Its Application

    Recommender systems (RSs) are systems that produce individualized recommendations as output or drive the user in a personalized way to interesting or useful objects in a space of possible options. Recently, RSs emerged as an effective support for decision making. However, when people make decisions, they usually take into account different and often conicting information such as preferences, long-term goals, context, and their current condition. This complexity is often ignored by RSs. In order to provide an effective decision-making support, a RS should be ``holistic'', i.e., it should rely on a complete representation of the user, encoding heterogeneous user features (such as personal interests, psychological traits, health data, social connections) that may come from multiple data sources. However, to obtain such holistic recommendations some steps are necessary: rst, we need to identify the goal of the decision-making process; then, we have to exploit common-sense and domain knowledge to provide the user with the most suitable suggestions that best t the recommendation scenario. In this article, we present a methodological framework that can drive researchers and developers during the design process of this kind of ``holistic'' RS. We also provide evidence of the framework validity by presenting the design process and the evaluation of a food RS based on holistic principles

    Nesta era tecnológica em que nos encontramos há cada vez mais informação disponível na internet, mas grande parte dessa informação não é relevante. Isto leva à necessidade de criar maneiras de filtrar informação, de forma a reduzir o tempo de recolha de informação útil. Esta necessidade torna o uso de sistemas de recomendação muito apelativo, visto estes personalizarem as pesquisas de forma a ajudar os seus utilizadores a fazer escolhas mais informadas. Os sistemas de recomendação procuram recomendar os itens mais relevantes aos seus utilizadores, no entanto necessitam de informação sobre os utilizadores e os itens, de forma a melhor os poder organizar e categorizar. Há vários tipos de sistemas de recomendação, cada um com as suas forças e fraquezas. De modo a superar as limitações destes sistemas surgiram os sistemas de recomendação híbridos, que procuram combinar características dos diferentes tipos de sistemas de recomendação de modo a reduzir, ou eliminar, as suas fraquezas. Uma das limitações dos sistemas de recomendação acontece quando o próprio sistema não tem informação suficiente para fazer recomendações. Esta limitação tem o nome de Cold Start e pode focar-se numa de duas áreas: quando a falta de informação vem do utilizador, conhecida como User Cold Start; e quando a falta de informação vem de um item, conhecida como Item Cold Start. O foco desta dissertação é no User Cold Start, nomeadamente na criação de um sistema de recomendação híbrido capaz de lidar com esta situação. A abordagem apresentada nesta dissertação procura combinar a segmentação de clientes com regras de associação. O objetivo passa por descobrir os utilizadores mais similares aos utilizadores numa situação de Cold Start e, através dos itens avaliados pelos utilizadores mais similares, recomendar os itens considerados mais relevantes, obtidos através de regras de associação. O algoritmo híbrido apresentado nesta dissertação procura e classifica todos os tipos de utilizadores. Quando um utilizador numa situação de Cold Start está à procura de recomendações, o sistema encontra itens para recomendar através da aplicação de regras de associação a itens avaliados por utilizadores no mesmo grupo que o utilizador na situação de Cold Start, cruzando essas regras com os itens avaliados por este último e apresentando as recomendações com base no resultado.Recommender systems, or recommenders, are a way to filter the useful information from the data, in this age where there is a lot of available data. A recommender system’s purpose is to recommend relevant items to users, and to do that, it requires information on both, data from users and from items, to better organise and categorise both of them. There are several types of recommenders, each best suited for a specific purpose, and with specific weaknesses. Then there are hybrid recommenders, made by combining one or more types of recommenders in a way that each type supresses, or at least limits, the weaknesses of the other types. A very important weakness of recommender systems occurs when the system doesn’t have enough information about something and so, it cannot make a recommendation. This problem known as a Cold Start problem is addressed in this thesis. There are two types of Cold Start problems: those where the lack of information comes from a user (User Cold Start) and those where it comes from an item (Item Cold Start). This thesis’ main focus is on User Cold Start problems. A novel approach is introduced in this thesis which combines clients’ segmentation with association rules. The goal is first, finding the most similar users to cold start users and then, with the items rated by these similar users, recommend those that are most suitable, which are gotten through association rules. The hybrid algorithm presented in this thesis finds and classifies all users’ types. When a user in a Cold Start situation is looking for recommendations, the system finds the items to recommend to him by applying association rules to the items evaluated by users in the same user group as the Cold Start user, crossing them with the few items evaluated by the Cold Start user and finally making its recommendations based on that
