    Hybrid Algorithms Based on Integer Programming for the Search of Prioritized Test Data in Software Product Lines

    In Software Product Lines (SPLs) it is not possible, in general, to test all products of the family. The number of products denoted by a SPL is very high due to the combinatorial explosion of features. For this reason, some coverage criteria have been proposed which try to test at least all feature interactions without the necessity to test all products, e.g., all pairs of features (pairwise coverage). In addition, it is desirable to first test products composed by a set of priority features. This problem is known as the Prioritized Pairwise Test Data Generation Problem. In this work we propose two hybrid algorithms using Integer Programming (IP) to generate a prioritized test suite. The first one is based on an integer linear formulation and the second one is based on a integer quadratic (nonlinear) formulation. We compare these techniques with two state-of-the-art algorithms, the Parallel Prioritized Genetic Solver (PPGS) and a greedy algorithm called prioritized-ICPL. Our study reveals that our hybrid nonlinear approach is clearly the best in both, solution quality and computation time. Moreover, the nonlinear variant (the fastest one) is 27 and 42 times faster than PPGS in the two groups of instances analyzed in this work.Universidad de Málaga.     Precoded Cluster Hopping in Multi-Beam High Throughput Satellite Systems

    Beam-Hopping (BH) and precoding are two trending technologies for the satellite community. While BH enables flexibility to adapt the offered capacity to the heterogeneous demand, precoding aims at boosting the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we consider a high throughput satellite (HTS) system that employs BH in conjunction with precoding. In particular, we propose the concept of Cluster-Hopping (CH) that seamlessly combines the BH and precoding paradigms and utilize their individual competencies. The cluster is defined as a set of adjacent beams that are simultaneously illuminated. In addition, we propose an efficient time-space illumination pattern design, where we determine the set of clusters that can be illuminated simultaneously at each hopping event along with the illumination duration. We model the CH time-space illumination pattern design as an integer programming problem which can be efficiently solved. Supporting results based on numerical simulations are provided which validate the effectiveness of the proposed CH concept and time-space illumination pattern design

    Generating Preview Tables for Entity Graphs

    Users are tapping into massive, heterogeneous entity graphs for many applications. It is challenging to select entity graphs for a particular need, given abundant datasets from many sources and the oftentimes scarce information for them. We propose methods to produce preview tables for compact presentation of important entity types and relationships in entity graphs. The preview tables assist users in attaining a quick and rough preview of the data. They can be shown in a limited display space for a user to browse and explore, before she decides to spend time and resources to fetch and investigate the complete dataset. We formulate several optimization problems that look for previews with the highest scores according to intuitive goodness measures, under various constraints on preview size and distance between preview tables. The optimization problem under distance constraint is NP-hard. We design a dynamic-programming algorithm and an Apriori-style algorithm for finding optimal previews. Results from experiments, comparison with related work and user studies demonstrated the scoring measures' accuracy and the discovery algorithms' efficiency.Comment: This is the camera-ready version of a SIGMOD16 paper.     A Constant-Factor Approximation for Multi-Covering with Disks

    We consider variants of the following multi-covering problem with disks. We are given two point sets YY (servers) and XX (clients) in the plane, a coverage function κ:X→N\kappa :X \rightarrow \mathcal{N}, and a constant α≥1\alpha \geq 1. Centered at each server is a single disk whose radius we are free to set. The requirement is that each client x∈Xx \in X be covered by at least κ(x)\kappa(x) of the server disks. The objective function we wish to minimize is the sum of the α\alpha-th powers of the disk radii. We present a polynomial time algorithm for this problem achieving an O(1)O(1) approximation

    Convex Relaxations for Permutation Problems

    Seriation seeks to reconstruct a linear order between variables using unsorted, pairwise similarity information. It has direct applications in archeology and shotgun gene sequencing for example. We write seriation as an optimization problem by proving the equivalence between the seriation and combinatorial 2-SUM problems on similarity matrices (2-SUM is a quadratic minimization problem over permutations). The seriation problem can be solved exactly by a spectral algorithm in the noiseless case and we derive several convex relaxations for 2-SUM to improve the robustness of seriation solutions in noisy settings. These convex relaxations also allow us to impose structural constraints on the solution, hence solve semi-supervised seriation problems. We derive new approximation bounds for some of these relaxations and present numerical experiments on archeological data, Markov chains and DNA assembly from shotgun gene sequencing data.Comment: Final journal version, a few typos and references fixe

    Consistent ICP for the registration of sparse and inhomogeneous point clouds

    In this paper, we derive a novel iterative closest point (ICP) technique that performs point cloud alignment in a robust and consistent way. Traditional ICP techniques minimize the point-to-point distances, which are successful when point clouds contain no noise or clutter and moreover are dense and more or less uniformly sampled. In the other case, it is better to employ point-to-plane or other metrics to locally approximate the surface of the objects. However, the point-to-plane metric does not yield a symmetric solution, i.e. the estimated transformation of point cloud p to point cloud q is not necessarily equal to the inverse transformation of point cloud q to point cloud p. In order to improve ICP, we will enforce such symmetry constraints as prior knowledge and make it also robust to noise and clutter. Experimental results show that our method is indeed much more consistent and accurate in presence of noise and clutter compared to existing ICP algorithms
