Learning Micromanipulation, Part 1: An Approach Based on Multidimensional Ability Inventories and Text Mining.
In the last decades, an effort has been made to improve the efficiency of high-level and academic education players. Nowadays, students’ preferences and habits are continuously evolving and so the educational institutions deal with important challenges, such as not losing attractiveness or preventing early abandonment during the programs. In many countries, some important universities are public, and so they receive national grants that are based on a variety of factors, on which the teaching efficiency has a great impact. This contribution presents a method to improve students commitment during traditional lessons and laboratory tests. The idea consists in planning some activities according to the students’ learning preferences, which were studied by means of two different approaches. The first one was based on Gardner’s multiple intelligence inventory, which is useful to highlight some peculiar characteristics of the students on the specific educational field. In the second method, direct interviews, voice recognition, and text mining were used to extract some interesting characteristics of the group of students who participated in the projects. The methods were applied in May 2018 to the students attending the course of Micro-Nano Sensors and Actuators for the postgraduate academic program dedicated to Industrial Nanotechnologies Engineering of the University of Rome La Sapienza. The present paper represents the first part of the investigation and it is dedicated essentially to the adopted methods. Electrospun Piezoelectric Polymer Nanofiber Layers for Enabling in Situ Measurement in High-Performance Composite Laminates
This article highlights the effects from composite manufacturing parameters on fiber-reinforced composite laminates modified with layers of piezoelectric thermoplastic nanofibers and a conductive electrode layer. Such modifications have been used for enabling in situ deformation measurement in high-performance aerospace and renewable energy composites. Procedures for manufacturing high-performance composites are well-known and standardized. However, this does not imply that modifications via addition of functional layers (e.g., piezoelectric nanofibers) while following the same manufacturing procedures can lead to a successful multifunctional composite structure (e.g., for enabling in situ measurement). This article challenges success of internal embedment of piezoelectric nanofibers in standard manufacturing of high-performance composites via relying on composite process specifications and parameters only. It highlights that the process parameters must be revised for manufacturing of multifunctional composites. Several methods have been used to lay up and manufacture composites such as electrospinning the thermoplastic nanofibers, processing an inter digital electrode (IDE) made by conductive epoxy-graphene resin, and prepreg autoclave manufacturing aerospace grade laminates. The purpose of fabrication of IDE was to use a resin type (HexFlow RTM6) for the conductive layer similar to that used for the composite. Thereby, material mismatch is avoided and the structural integrity is sustained via mitigation of downgrading effects on the interlaminar properties. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy analyses have been carried out in the material characterization phase. Pulsed thermography and ultrasonic C-scanning were used for the localization of conductive resin embedded within the composite laminates. This study also provides recommendations for enabling internally embedded piezoelectricity (and thus health-monitoring capabilities) in high-performance composite laminates

Freeform Fabrication of Ionomeric Polymer-Metal Composite Actuators
Ionomeric polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators are a type of soft electromechanically active material which offers
large displacement, rapid motion with only ~1V stimulus. IPMC’s are entering commercial applications in toys (Ashley
2003) and biomedical devices (Soltanpour 2001; Shahinpoor 2002; Shahinpoor, Shahinpoor et al. 2003; Soltanpour and
Shahinpoor 2003; Soltanpour and Shahinpoor 2004), but unfortunately they can only actuate by bending, limiting their
utility. Freeform fabrication offers a possible means of producing IPMC with novel geometry and/or tightly integrated with
mechanisms which can yield linear or more complex motion. We have developed materials and processes which allow us to
freeform fabricate complete IPMC actuators and their fabrication substrate which will allow integration within other
freeform fabricated devices. We have produced simple IPMC’s using our multiple material freeform fabrication system, and
have demonstrated operation in air for more than 40 minutes and 256 bidirectional actuation cycles. The output stress scaled
to input power is two orders of magnitude inferior to that of the best reported performance for devices produced in the
traditional manner, but only slightly inferior to devices produced in a more similar manner. Possible explanations and paths
to improvement are presented. Freeform fabrication of complete electroactive polymer actuators in unusual geometries,
with tailored actuation behavior, and integrated with other freeform fabricated active components, will enable advances in
biomedical device engineering, biologically inspired robotics, and other fields. This work constitutes the first
demonstration of complete, functional, IPMC actuators produced entirely by freeform fabrication.Mechanical Engineerin
Mechanical and Electrical Characterization of Hybrid Carbon Nanotube Sheet-Graphene Nanocomposites for Sensing Applications
The unique mechanical and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes and graphitic structures have drawn extensive attention from researchers over the past two decades. The electro-mechanical behavior of these structures and their composites, in which electrical resistance changes when mechanical deformation is applied facilitates their use in sensing applications.
In this work, carbon nanotube sheet- epoxy nanocomposites with the matrix modified with various contents of coarse and fine graphene nanoplatelets are fabricated. The addition of a secondary filler results in improvements of both electrical and mechanical properties. In addition, with the inclusion of the second filler, change in resistivity with mechanical deformation (manifested by gauge factor) is significantly enhanced. Nanocomposite with 5 wt. % coarse graphene platelets achieved is the most effective resistivity-strain behavior and largest gauge factor. Similar trend in variation of gauge factor variation was observed for fine graphene nanoplatelet - nanotube sheet nanocomposites. An analytical model for explaining these observations, incorporating strain and the effect of second filler, is developed.
Sensors fabricated using these hybrid nanocomposites can be potentially used in damage sensing of aerospace carbon-fiber composites
3D/4D printing of cellulose nanocrystals-based biomaterials: Additives for sustainable applications
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have gained significant attraction from both industrial and academic sectors, thanks to their biodegradability, non-toxicity, and renewability with remarkable mechanical characteristics. Desirable mechanical characteristics of CNCs include high stiffness, high strength, excellent flexibility, and large surface-to-volume ratio. Additionally, the mechanical properties of CNCs can be tailored through chemical modifications for high-end applications including tissue engineering, actuating, and biomedical. Modern manufacturing methods including 3D/4D printing are highly advantageous for developing sophisticated and intricate geometries. This review highlights the major developments of additive manufactured CNCs, which promote sustainable solutions across a wide range of applications. Additionally, this contribution also presents current challenges and future research directions of CNC-based composites developed through 3D/4D printing techniques for myriad engineering sectors including tissue engineering, wound healing, wearable electronics, robotics, and anti-counterfeiting applications. Overall, this review will greatly help research scientists from chemistry, materials, biomedicine, and other disciplines to comprehend the underlying principles, mechanical properties, and applications of additively manufactured CNC-based structures
High Precision 3D Printing for Micro to Nano Scale Biomedical and Electronic Devices
Three dimensional printing (3DP), or additive manufacturing, is an exponentially growing process in the fabrication of various technologies with applications in sectors such as electronics, biomedical, pharmaceutical and tissue engineering. Micro and nano scale printing is encouraging the innovation of the aforementioned sectors, due to the ability to control design, material and chemical properties at a highly precise level, which is advantageous in creating a high surface area to volume ratio and altering the overall products’ mechanical and physical properties. In this review, micro/-nano printing technology, mainly related to lithography, inkjet and electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing and their biomedical and electronic applications will be discussed. The current limitations to micro/-nano printing methods will be examined, covering the difficulty in achieving controlled structures at the miniscule micro and nano scale required for specific applications
