Crowdsourcing Argumentation Structures in Chinese Hotel Reviews
Argumentation mining aims at automatically extracting the premises-claim
discourse structures in natural language texts. There is a great demand for
argumentation corpora for customer reviews. However, due to the controversial
nature of the argumentation annotation task, there exist very few large-scale
argumentation corpora for customer reviews. In this work, we novelly use the
crowdsourcing technique to collect argumentation annotations in Chinese hotel
reviews. As the first Chinese argumentation dataset, our corpus includes 4814
argument component annotations and 411 argument relation annotations, and its
annotations qualities are comparable to some widely used argumentation corpora
in other languages.Comment: 6 pages,3 figures,This article has been submitted to "The 2017 IEEE

To dash or to dawdle: verb-associated speed of motion influences eye movements during spoken sentence comprehension
In describing motion events verbs of manner provide information about the speed of agents or objects in those events. We used eye tracking to investigate how inferences about this verb-associated speed of motion would influence the time course of attention to a visual scene that matched an event described in language. Eye movements were recorded as participants heard spoken sentences with verbs that implied a fast (“dash”) or slow (“dawdle”) movement of an agent towards a goal. These sentences were heard whilst participants concurrently looked at scenes depicting the agent and a path which led to the goal object. Our results indicate a mapping of events onto the visual scene consistent with participants mentally simulating the movement of the agent along the path towards the goal: when the verb implies a slow manner of motion, participants look more often and longer along the path to the goal; when the verb implies a fast manner of motion, participants tend to look earlier at the goal and less on the path. These results reveal that event comprehension in the presence of a visual world involves establishing and dynamically updating the locations of entities in response to linguistic descriptions of events
Tracking Eye Movements in Sight Translation – the comprehension process in interpreting
[[abstract]]While the three components of interpreting have been identified as comprehension, reformulation, and production, the process of how these components occur has remained relatively unexplored. The present study employed the eye-tracking method to investigate the process of sight translation, a mode of interpreting in which the input is written rather than oral. The research focused especially on the comprehension component in sight translation, addressed the validity of the horizontal and the vertical perspectives of interpreting, and ascertained whether reading ahead exists in sight translation. Eye movements of 18 interpreting students were recorded during silent reading of a Chinese speech, reading aloud a Chinese speech, and Chinese to English sight translation. Since silent reading consists of the comprehension component while reading aloud consists of the comprehension and production components, the two tasks served as a basis of comparison for investigating comprehension in sight translation.
The findings suggested that sight translation and silent reading were no different in the initial stage of reading, as reflected by similar first fixation duration, single fixation duration, gaze duration, fixation probability, and refixation probability. Sight translation only began to demonstrate differences from silent reading after first-pass reading, as shown by higher rereading time and rereading rate. Also, reading ahead occurred in 72.8% of cases in this experiment, indicating the overlap between reading and oral production in Chinese to English sight translation. The results supported the vertical perspective in interpreting as well as the claim of reading ahead. Implications for interpreter training are to attach more importance to paraphrasing skills and to focus more on the similarities between sight translation and simultaneous interpreting.
Smart, Responsible, and Upper Caste Only: Measuring Caste Attitudes through Large-Scale Analysis of Matrimonial Profiles
Discriminatory caste attitudes currently stigmatize millions of Indians,
subjecting individuals to prejudice in all aspects of life. Governmental
incentives and societal movements have attempted to counter these attitudes,
yet accurate measurements of public opinions on caste are not yet available for
understanding whether progress is being made. Here, we introduce a novel
approach to measure public attitudes of caste through an indicator variable:
openness to intercaste marriage. Using a massive dataset of over 313K profiles
from a major Indian matrimonial site, we precisely quantify public attitudes,
along with differences between generations and between Indian residents and
diaspora. We show that younger generations are more open to intercaste
marriage, yet attitudes are based on a complex function of social status beyond
their own caste. In examining the desired qualities in a spouse, we find that
individuals open to intercaste marriage are more individualistic in the
qualities they desire, rather than favoring family-related qualities, which
mirrors larger societal trends away from collectivism. Finally, we show that
attitudes in diaspora are significantly less open, suggesting a bi-cultural
model of integration. Our research provides the first empirical evidence
identifying how various intersections of identity shape attitudes toward
intercaste marriage in India and among the Indian diaspora in the US.Comment: 12 pages; Accepted to be published at ICWSM'1

Memory in autism spectrum disorder: a meta-analysis of experimental studies
To address inconsistencies in the literature on memory in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), we report the first ever meta-analysis of short-term (STM) and episodic long-term (LTM) memory in ASD, evaluating the effects of type of material, type of retrieval and the role of inter-item relations. Analysis of 64 studies comparing individuals with ASD and typical development (TD) showed greater difficulties in ASD compared to TD individuals in STM (Hedges’ g=-0.53 [95%CI -0.90; -0.16], p=.005, I²=96%) compared to LTM (g=-0.30 [95%CI -0.42; -0.17], p<.00001, I²=24%), a small difficulty in verbal LTM (g=-0.21, p=.01), contrasting with a medium difficulty for visual LTM (g= -0.41, p=.0002) in ASD compared to TD individuals. We also found a general diminution in free recall compared to cued recall and recognition (LTM, free recall: g=-0.38, p<.00001, cued recall: g=-0.08, p=.58, recognition: g=-0.15, p=.16; STM, free recall: g=-0.59, p=.004, recognition: g=-0.33, p=.07). We discuss these results in terms of their relation to semantic memory. The limited diminution in verbal LTM and preserved overall recognition and cued recall (supported retrieval) may result from a greater overlap of these tasks with semantic long-term representations which are overall preserved in ASD. By contrast, difficulties in STM or free recall may result from less overlap with the semantic system or may involve additional cognitive operations and executive demands. These findings highlight the need to support STM functioning in ASD and acknowledge the potential benefit of using verbal materials at encoding and broader forms of memory support at retrieval to enhance performance
