Ontology-based collaborative framework for disaster recovery scenarios
This paper aims at designing of adaptive framework for supporting
collaborative work of different actors in public safety and disaster recovery
missions. In such scenarios, firemen and robots interact to each other to reach
a common goal; firemen team is equipped with smart devices and robots team is
supplied with communication technologies, and should carry on specific tasks.
Here, reliable connection is mandatory to ensure the interaction between
actors. But wireless access network and communication resources are vulnerable
in the event of a sudden unexpected change in the environment. Also, the
continuous change in the mission requirements such as inclusion/exclusion of
new actor, changing the actor's priority and the limitations of smart devices
need to be monitored. To perform dynamically in such case, the presented
framework is based on a generic multi-level modeling approach that ensures
adaptation handled by semantic modeling. Automated self-configuration is driven
by rule-based reconfiguration policies through ontology
Enabling Context-Aware Web Services: A Middleware Approach for Ubiquitous Environments
In ubiquitous environments, mobile applications should sense and react to environmental changes to provide a better user experience. In order to deal with these concerns, Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) provide a solution allowing applications to interact with the services available in their surroundings. In particular, context-aware Web Services can adapt their behavior considering the user context. However, the limited resources of mobile devices restrict the adaptation degree. Furthermore, the diverse nature of context information makes diïŹcult its retrieval, processing and distribution. To tackle these challenges, we present the CAPPUCINO platform for executing context-aware Web Services in ubiquitous environments. In particular, in this chapter we focus on the middleware part that is built as an autonomic control loop that deals with dynamic adaptation. In this autonomic loop we use FraSCAti, an implementation of the Service Component Architecture (SCA) speciïŹcation, as the execution kernel for Web Services. The context distribution is achieved with SPACES, a ïŹexible solution based on REST (REpresentational State Transfer ) principles and beneïŹting from the COSMOS (COntext entitieS coMpositiOn and Sharing ) context manage- ment framework. The application of our platform is illustrated with a mobile commerce application scenario that combines context-aware Web Services and social networks
Aspects of Assembly and Cascaded Aspects of Assembly: Logical and Temporal Properties
Highly dynamic computing environments, like ubiquitous and pervasive
computing environments, require frequent adaptation of applications. This has
to be done in a timely fashion, and the adaptation process must be as fast as
possible and mastered. Moreover the adaptation process has to ensure a
consistent result when finished whereas adaptations to be implemented cannot be
anticipated at design time. In this paper we present our mechanism for
self-adaptation based on the aspect oriented programming paradigm called Aspect
of Assembly (AAs). Using AAs: (1) the adaptations process is fast and its
duration is mastered; (2) adaptations' entities are independent of each other
thanks to the weaver logical merging mechanism; and (3) the high variability of
the software infrastructure can be managed using a mono or multi-cycle weaving
approach.Comment: 14 pages, published in International Journal of Computer Science,

Survey on Quality of Observation within Sensor Web Systems
The Sensor Web vision refers to the addition of a middleware layer between sensors and applications. To bridge the gap between these two layers, Sensor Web systems must deal with heterogeneous sources, which produce heterogeneous observations of disparate quality. Managing such diversity at the application level can be complex and requires high levels of expertise from application developers. Moreover, as an information-centric system, any Sensor Web should provide support for Quality of Observation (QoO) requirements. In practice, however, only few Sensor Webs provide satisfying QoO support and are able to deliver high-quality observations to end consumers in a specific manner. This survey aims to study why and how observation quality should be addressed in Sensor Webs. It proposes three original contributions. First, it provides important insights into quality dimensions and proposes to use the QoO notion to deal with information quality within Sensor Webs. Second, it proposes a QoO-oriented review of 29 Sensor Web solutions developed between 2003 and 2016, as well as a custom taxonomy to characterise some of their features from a QoO perspective. Finally, it draws four major requirements required to build future adaptive and QoO-aware Sensor Web solutions
Model-based provisioning and management of adaptive distributed communication in mobile cooperative systems
Adaptation of communication is required to maintain the reliable connection and to ensure the minimum quality in collaborative activities. Within the framework of wireless environment, how can host entities be handled in the event of a sudden unexpected change in communication and reliable sources? This challenging issue is addressed in the context of Emergency rescue system carried out by mobile devices and robots during calamities or disaster. For this kind of scenario, this book proposes an adaptive middleware to support reconfigurable, reliable group communications. Here, the system structure has been viewed at two different states, a control center with high processing power and uninterrupted energy level is responsible for global task and entities like autonomous robots and firemen owning smart devices act locally in the mission. Adaptation at control center is handled by semantic modeling whereas at local entities, it is managed by a software module called communication agent (CA). Modeling follows the well-known SWRL instructions which establish the degree of importance of each communication link or component. Providing generic and scalable solutions for automated self-configuration is driven by rule-based reconfiguration policies. To perform dynamically in changing environment, a trigger mechanism should force this model to take an adaptive action in order to accomplish a certain task, for example, the group chosen in the beginning of a mission need not be the same one during the whole mission. Local entity adaptive mechanisms are handled by CA that manages internal service APIs to configure, set up, and monitors communication services and manages the internal resources to satisfy telecom service requirements
GRIDKIT: Pluggable overlay networks for Grid computing
A `second generation' approach to the provision of Grid middleware is now emerging which is built on service-oriented architecture and web services standards and technologies. However, advanced Grid applications have significant demands that are not addressed by present-day web services platforms. As one prime example, current platforms do not support the rich diversity of communication `interaction types' that are demanded by advanced applications (e.g. publish-subscribe, media streaming, peer-to-peer interaction). In the paper we describe the Gridkit middleware which augments the basic service-oriented architecture to address this particular deficiency. We particularly focus on the communications infrastructure support required to support multiple interaction types in a unified, principled and extensible manner-which we present in terms of the novel concept of pluggable overlay networks
