    A Process Framework for Managing Quality of Service in Private Cloud

    As information systems leaders tap into the global market of cloud computing-based services, they struggle to maintain consistent application performance due to lack of a process framework for managing quality of service (QoS) in the cloud. Guided by the disruptive innovation theory, the purpose of this case study was to identify a process framework for meeting the QoS requirements of private cloud service users. Private cloud implementation was explored by selecting an organization in California through purposeful sampling. Information was gathered by interviewing 23 information technology (IT) professionals, a mix of frontline engineers, managers, and leaders involved in the implementation of private cloud. Another source of data was documents such as standard operating procedures, policies, and guidelines related to private cloud implementation. Interview transcripts and documents were coded and sequentially analyzed. Three prominent themes emerged from the analysis of data: (a) end user expectations, (b) application architecture, and (c) trending analysis. The findings of this study may help IT leaders in effectively managing QoS in cloud infrastructure and deliver reliable application performance that may help in increasing customer population and profitability of organizations. This study may contribute to positive social change as information systems managers and workers can learn and apply the process framework for delivering stable and reliable cloud-hosted computer applications

    A comparison framework for server virtualisation systems a case study

    Recent years have seen a revival of interest in virtualisation research. Although this term has been used to refer to various systems, the focus of this research is on systems which partition a single physical server into multiple virtual servers. It is difficult for researchers and practitioners to get a clear picture of the state of the art in server virtualisation. This is due in part to the large number of systems available. Another reason is that information about virtualisation systems lacks structure, and is dispersed among multiple sources. Practitioners, such as data centre managers and systems administrators, may be familiar with virtualisation systems from a specific vendor, but generally lack a broader view of the field. This makes it difficult to make informed decisions when selecting these systems. Researchers and vendors who are developing virtualisation systems also lack a standard framework for identifying the strengths and weaknesses of their systems, compared to competing systems. It is also time-consuming for researchers who are new to the field to learn about current virtualisation systems. The purpose of this research was to develop a framework to solve these problems. The objectives of the research correspond to the applications of the framework. These include conducting comparative evaluations of server virtualisation systems, identifying strengths and weaknesses of particular virtualisation systems, specifying virtualisation system requirements to facilitate system selection, and gathering information about current virtualisation systems in a structured form. These four objectives were satisfied. The design of this framework was also guided by six framework design principles. These principles, or secondary objectives, were also met. The framework was developed based on an extensive literature study of data centres, virtualisation and current virtualisation systems. Criteria were selected through an inductive process. The feasibility of conducting evaluations using the framework was demonstrated by means of literature-based evaluations, and a practical case study. The use of the framework to facilitate virtualisation system selection was also demonstrated by means of a case study featuring the NMMU Telkom CoE data centre. This framework has a number of practical applications, ranging from the facilitation of decision-making to identifying areas for improvement in current virtualisation systems. The information resulting from evaluations using the framework is also a valuable resource for researchers who are new to the field. The literature study which forms the theoretical foundation of this work is particularly useful in this regard. A future extension to this work would be to develop a decision support system based on the framework. Another possibility is to make the framework, and evaluations, available on-line as a resource for data center managers, vendors and researchers. This would also enable other researchers to provide additional feedback, enabling the framework to be further refine

    Integration of Interactive Voice Response Unit and Outage Management System

    This project provides a technical solution that integrates the Interactive Voice Response Unit (IVR) and the Outage Management System (OMS) for the Public Service Company. The IVR system is introduced because its automatic call logging functionality can process a large volume of phone calls from the customers reporting electrical service problems. This is a major improvement over the current Trouble Call Center (TCC) infrastructure that has a limited number of agents handling a relatively small number of customer calls. Because OMS can receive more calls, it then can predict the outage locations and causes more accurately, dispatch more repair crews on time, and restore outages quicker. As a result, the company benefits greatly on its customer relationship and revenue generation. The goal of this project is to provide a simpler and less costly approach to the integration of IVR and OMS than the conventional integration approach provided by the IVR vender. The proposed solution utilizes the existing interface application between TCC and OMS. An adapter will be developed to communicate between IVR and the TCC-OMS interface. The adapter consists of a set of database tables and stored procedures. Compared with the vender\u27s full integration approach from IVR to OMS, this proposed simple solution provides significant savings on the cost and time of the interface development as well as the system maintenance and upgrade

    A feasibility study for advanced technology integration for general aviation

    An investigation was conducted to identify candidate technologies and specific developments which offer greatest promise for improving safety, fuel efficiency, performance, and utility of general aviation airplanes. Interviews were conducted with general aviation airframe and systems manufacturers and NASA research centers. The following technologies were evaluated for use in airplane design tradeoff studies conducted during the study: avionics, aerodynamics, configurations, structures, flight controls, and propulsion. Based on industry interviews and design tradeoff studies, several recommendations were made for further high payoff research. The most attractive technologies for use by the general aviation industry appear to be advanced engines, composite materials, natural laminar flow airfoils, and advanced integrated avionics systems. The integration of these technologies in airplane design can yield significant increases in speeds, ranges, and payloads over present aircraft with 40 percent to 50 percent reductions in fuel used

    Gestational diabetes self-management and remote monitoring mobile platform

    There is a high prevalence of gestational diabetes (GD) in South Africa, which is continually growing. South African women with GD are not effectively managed or educated about selfcare, do not self-monitor frequently enough and, therefore, often succumb to various GD induced complications. The ineffective management of GD is largely due to financial and time constraints caused by the regularly required outpatient services. On the other hand, healthcare professionals do not monitor their patients frequently enough because of accessibility issues, which means they cannot intervene timeously to prevent diabetes complications. The aim of this project was to develop a mobile health (mHealth) platform for GD self-management and for remote monitoring to improve the GD cycle of care in South Africa. The objectives were to assess the current GD management practices in South Africa, to assess the existing mHealth solutions for GD and to design, develop and test a GD mHealth platform. The existing GD management practices and current GD mHealth solutions were investigated. The results of the investigation informed the design of low-fidelity and high-fidelity mock-ups of the platform. The high-fidelity mock-up underwent usability testing and the insights gained were used to develop a working prototype of the new mHealth platform, which was then ready for in-lab testing. It was found that GD had a prevalence of up to 25% in parts of South Africa. Over 70% of patients in both private and public healthcare sectors did not meet their diabetic goals, which directly correlated with diabetes induced complications. However, previous research found that using mHealth as an intervention caused a statistically significant decrease of 0.38 mmol/L (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.52 mmol/L to 0.23 mmol/L) in overall blood glucose levels during pregnancy when compared to a control group. There was a higher probability of vaginal deliveries in the intervention group than in the control group (risk ratio = 1.18). It was less likely for new-borns from the intervention group to be diagnosed with hypoglycaemia than new-borns from the control group (risk ratio = 0.67). Based on the research and usability studies conducted, an alpha version of the GD mHealth platform was developed, including a mobile app used to track the patient’s blood glucose levels via a Bluetooth-enabled glucose meter. The food intake, exercise and weight gain during pregnancy were manually captured by the patient. The app reminded the patient to take medication, measure glucose levels and attend appointments. A GD educational component was available for the patient throughout the pregnancy. The platform included a web app which allowed healthcare professionals to remotely monitor and communicate with their patients so that they could analyse trends in the data and intervene when necessary. The testing done on the prototype resulted in positive feedback with 60% of participants saying that they would use the GooDMoM mobile app to manage their GD and 70% of participants saying that they would use the GooDMoM web app to manage their patients with GD. This put the platform in a good position for beta development. The solution has the potential to benefit patients both financially and timewise, by reducing the frequency of hospital visits required. It also has the potential to positively impact the healthcare professionals by reducing the tediousness of their workload and allowing for remote monitoring of patients. The platform can, thus, optimise the GD management process in South Africa and worldwide
