    Experimental optimization of wireless protocols and validation of novel solutions is often problematic, due to limited configuration space present in commercial wireless interfaces as well as complexity of monolithic driver implementation on SDR-based experimentation platforms. To overcome these limitations a novel software architecture is proposed, called WiSHFUL, devised to allow: i) maximal exploitation of radio functionalities available in current radio chips, and ii) clean separation between the logic for optimizing the radio protocols (i.e. radio control) and the definition of these protocols

    1992 NASA Life Support Systems Analysis workshop

    The 1992 Life Support Systems Analysis Workshop was sponsored by NASA's Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST) to integrate the inputs from, disseminate information to, and foster communication among NASA, industry, and academic specialists. The workshop continued discussion and definition of key issues identified in the 1991 workshop, including: (1) modeling and experimental validation; (2) definition of systems analysis evaluation criteria; (3) integration of modeling at multiple levels; and (4) assessment of process control modeling approaches. Through both the 1991 and 1992 workshops, NASA has continued to seek input from industry and university chemical process modeling and analysis experts, and to introduce and apply new systems analysis approaches to life support systems. The workshop included technical presentations, discussions, and interactive planning, with sufficient time allocated for discussion of both technology status and technology development recommendations. Key personnel currently involved with life support technology developments from NASA, industry, and academia provided input to the status and priorities of current and future systems analysis methods and requirements

    A study of the reduction of simulation modeling development time

    This paper presents new ideas dealing with simulation model development that are derived from the principles of lean manufacturing, for example, the concept of treating the time that is spent in production activities as lead-time, and the feasibility of reducing the lead-time through different mechanisms, which are presented in a framework [44]. One of the main obstacles in developing simulation model is time. Simulation lead-time is composed of nine steps of simulation model development. These steps are: problem definition, establishing boundaries, establishing variables, data collection, model development, verification & validation, documentation, experimentation, and implementation. This paper presents the idea of treating the time spent in simulation modeling development as a lead-time. At the same time, it presents a new framework to reduce lead-time, which has never been addressed before. A new framework to reduce the simulation modeling development long lead-time similar to the Toyota production framework for reducing the production lead-time will be presented in this paperThe framework developed as a result of an actual simulation case study, which took place at a local company, and which took a very long lead-time. The framework was composed of different steps, techniques, and mechanisms that should reduce simulation modeling development lead-time every time a simulation project is conducted. One of the goals of this framework is to reduce one of the main obstacles of simulation model, which is the long lead-time. One of the new mechanisms that is presented in this framework is a geographical distributed communication tool, which is called NetMeeting. This tool is an application of the concept of distributed and Web-Based simulations

    Ontology-based knowledge representation of experiment metadata in biological data mining

    According to the PubMed resource from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, over 750,000 scientific articles have been published in the ~5000 biomedical journals worldwide in the year 2007 alone. The vast majority of these publications include results from hypothesis-driven experimentation in overlapping biomedical research domains. Unfortunately, the sheer volume of information being generated by the biomedical research enterprise has made it virtually impossible for investigators to stay aware of the latest findings in their domain of interest, let alone to be able to assimilate and mine data from related investigations for purposes of meta-analysis. While computers have the potential for assisting investigators in the extraction, management and analysis of these data, information contained in the traditional journal publication is still largely unstructured, free-text descriptions of study design, experimental application and results interpretation, making it difficult for computers to gain access to the content of what is being conveyed without significant manual intervention. In order to circumvent these roadblocks and make the most of the output from the biomedical research enterprise, a variety of related standards in knowledge representation are being developed, proposed and adopted in the biomedical community. In this chapter, we will explore the current status of efforts to develop minimum information standards for the representation of a biomedical experiment, ontologies composed of shared vocabularies assembled into subsumption hierarchical structures, and extensible relational data models that link the information components together in a machine-readable and human-useable framework for data mining purposes
