Accurate multiphase flow measurement is crucial in the energy industry. Over the past decades, separation of the multiphase flow into single-phase flows has been a standard method for measuring multiphase flowrate. However, in-situ, non-invasive, and real-time imaging and measuring the key parameters of multiphase flows remain a long-standing challenge. To tackle the challenge, this thesis first explores the feasibility of performing time-difference and frequency-difference imaging of multiphase flows with complex-valued electrical capacitance tomography (CVECT). The multiple measurement vector (MMV) model-based CVECT imaging algorithm is proposed to reconstruct conductivity and permittivity distribution simultaneously, and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is applied to solve the multi-frequency image reconstruction problem. The proposed multiphase flow imaging approach is verified and benchmarked with widely adopted tomographic image reconstruction algorithms. Another focus of this thesis is multiphase flowrate estimation based on low-cost, multi-modal sensors. Machine learning (ML) has recently emerged as a powerful tool to deal with time series sensing data from multi-modal sensors. This thesis investigates three prevailing machine learning methods, i.e., deep neural network (DNN), support vector machine (SVM), and convolutional neural network (CNN), to estimate the flowrate of oil/gas/water three-phase flows based on the Venturi tube. The improvement of CNN with the combination of long-short term memory machine (LSTM) is made and a temporal convolution network (TCN) model is introduced to analyse the collected time series sensing data from the Venturi tube installed in a pilot-scale multiphase flow facility. Furthermore, a multi-modal approach for multiphase flowrate measurement is developed by combining the Venturi tube and a dual-plane ECT sensor. An improved TCN model is built to predict the multiphase flowrate with various data pre-processing methods. The results provide guidance on data pre-processing methods for multiphase flowrate measurement and suggest that the proposed combination of low-cost flow sensing techniques and machine learning can effectively translate the time series sensing data to achieve satisfactory flowrate measurement under various flow conditions

Oil and gas metering is primarily used as the basis for evaluating the economic viability of oil wells. Owing to the economic implications of oil and gas metering, the subject of oil and gas flow rate measurement has witnessed a sustained interest by the oil and gas community and the academia. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, despite the growing number of published articles on this subject, there is yet no comprehensive critical review on it. The objective of this paper is to provide a broad overview of models and modelling techniques applied to the estimation of oil and gas flow rate through chokes while also critically evaluating them. For the sake of simplicity and ease of reference, the outcomes of the review are presented in tables in an integrated and concise manner. The articles for this review were extracted from many subject areas. For the theoretical pieces related to oil and gas flow rate in general, the authors relied heavily upon several key drilling fluid texts. For operational and field studies, the authors relied on conference proceedings from the society of petroleum engineers. These sources were supplemented with articles in peer reviewed journals in order to contextualize the subject in terms of current practices. This review is interspersed with critiques of the models while the areas requiring improvement were also outlined. Findings from the bibliometric analysis indicate that there is no universal model for all flow situations despite the huge efforts in this direction. Furthermore, a broad survey of literature on recent flow models reveals that researchers are gravitating towards the field of artificial intelligence due to the tremendous promises it offers. This review constitutes the first critical compilation on a broad range of models applied to predicting oil and gas flow rates through chokes

Measurement of Gas-Oil Two-Phase Flow Patterns by Using CNN Algorithm Based on Dual ECT Sensors with Venturi Tube

In modern society, the oil industry has become the foundation of the world economy, and how to efficiently extract oil is a pressing problem. Among them, the accurate measurement of oil-gas two-phase parameters is one of the bottlenecks in oil extraction technology. It is found that through the experiment the flow patterns of the oil-gas two-phase flow will change after passing through the venturi tube with the same flow rates. Under the different oil-gas flow rate, the change will be diverse. Being motivated by the above experiments, we use the dual ECT sensors to collect the capacitance values before and after the venturi tube, respectively. Additionally, we use the linear projection algorithm (LBP) algorithm to reconstruct the image of flow patterns. This paper discusses the relationship between the change of flow patterns and the flow rates. Furthermore, a convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm is proposed to predict the oil flow rate, gas flow rate, and GVF (gas void fraction, especially referring to sectional gas fraction) of the two-phase flow. We use ElasticNet regression as the loss function to effectively avoid possible overfitting problems. In actual experiments, we compare the Typical-ECT-imaging-based-GVF algorithm and SVM (Support Vector Machine) algorithm with CNN algorithm based on three different ECT datasets. Three different sets of ECT data are used to predict the gas flow rate, oil flow rate, and GVF, and they are respectively using the venturi front-based ECT data only, while using the venturi behind-based ECT data and using both these data
