Mobile Life: A Research Foundation for Mobile Services
The telecom and IT industry is now facing the challenge of a second IT-revolution, where the
spread of mobile and ubiquitous services will have an even more profound effect on commercial
and social life than the recent Internet revolution. Users will expect services that are unique and
fully adapted for the mobile setting, which means that the roles of the operators will change, new
business models will be required, and new methods for developing and marketing services have
to be found. Most of all, we need technology and services that put people at core. The industry
must prepare to design services for a sustainable web of work, leisure and ubiquitous technology
we can call the mobile life. In this paper, we describe the main components of a research agenda
for mobile services, which is carried out at the Mobile Life Center at Stockholm University. This
research program takes a sustainable approach to research and development of mobile and
ubiquitous services, by combining a strong theoretical foundation (embodied interaction), a welldefined
methodology (user-centered design) and an important domain with large societal
importance and commercial potential (mobile life). Eventually the center will create an
experimental mobile services ecosystem, which will serve as an open arena where partners from
academia and industry can develop our vision an abundant future marketplace for future mobile servíces
Context for Ubiquitous Data Management
In response to the advance of ubiquitous computing technologies, we believe that for computer systems to be ubiquitous, they must be context-aware. In this paper, we address the impact of context-awareness on ubiquitous data management. To do this, we overview different characteristics of context in order to develop a clear understanding of context, as well as its implications and requirements for context-aware data management. References to recent research activities and applicable techniques are also provided

Using mobile RE tools to give end-users their own voice
Researchers highlight end-user involvement in system design as an important concept for developing useful and usable solutions. However, end-user involvement in software engineering is still an open-ended topic. Novel paradigms such as service-oriented computing strengthen the need for more active end-user involvement in order to provide systems that are tailored to individual end-user needs. Our work is based on the fact that the majority of end-users are familiar with mobile devices and use an increasing number of mobile applications. A mobile tool enabling end-user led requirements elicitation could be just one of many applications installed on end-users' mobile devices. In this paper, we present a framework of end-user involvement in requirements elicitation which motivates our research. The main contribution of our research is a tool-supported requirements elicitation approach allowing end-users to document needs in situ. Furthermore, we present first evaluation results to highlight the feasibility of on-site end-user led requirements elicitation
Towards Exascale Scientific Metadata Management
Advances in technology and computing hardware are enabling scientists from
all areas of science to produce massive amounts of data using large-scale
simulations or observational facilities. In this era of data deluge, effective
coordination between the data production and the analysis phases hinges on the
availability of metadata that describe the scientific datasets. Existing
workflow engines have been capturing a limited form of metadata to provide
provenance information about the identity and lineage of the data. However,
much of the data produced by simulations, experiments, and analyses still need
to be annotated manually in an ad hoc manner by domain scientists. Systematic
and transparent acquisition of rich metadata becomes a crucial prerequisite to
sustain and accelerate the pace of scientific innovation. Yet, ubiquitous and
domain-agnostic metadata management infrastructure that can meet the demands of
extreme-scale science is notable by its absence.
To address this gap in scientific data management research and practice, we
present our vision for an integrated approach that (1) automatically captures
and manipulates information-rich metadata while the data is being produced or
analyzed and (2) stores metadata within each dataset to permeate
metadata-oblivious processes and to query metadata through established and
standardized data access interfaces. We motivate the need for the proposed
integrated approach using applications from plasma physics, climate modeling
and neuroscience, and then discuss research challenges and possible solutions
