Dread Hermeneutics: Bob Marley, Paul Ricoeur and the Productive Imagination.

This article presents Paul Ricœur’s hermeneutic of the productive imagination as a methodological tool for understanding the innovative social function of texts that in exceeding their semantic meaning, iconically augment reality. Through the reasoning of Rastafari elder Mortimo Planno’s unpublished text, Rastafarian: The Earth’s Most Strangest Man, and the religious and biblical signification from the music of his most famous postulate, Bob Marley, this article applies Paul Ricœur’s schema of the religious productive imagination to conceptualize the metaphoric transfer from text to life of verbal and iconic images of Rastafari’s hermeneutic of word, sound and power. This transformation is accomplished through what Ricœur terms the phenomenology of the iconic augmentation of reality. Understanding this semantic innovation is critical to understanding the capacity of the religious imagination to transform reality as a proclamation of hope in the midst of despair

    Economics: Between Prediction and Criticism

    Get PDF
We suggest that one way in which economic analysis is useful is by offering a critique of reasoning. According to this view, economic theory may be useful not only by providing predictions, but also by pointing out weaknesses of arguments. It is argued that, when a theory requires a non-trivial act of interpretation, its roles in producing predictions and offering critiques vary in a substantial way. We offer a formal model in which these different roles can be captured

The Speaking Christ in His Royal Office

One might argue as to whether the doctrine of the threefold office of Christ is really usable for a comprehensive description of the work of Christ. There are expositions of Christian doctrine enough which do not follow this pattern at all. There are those who fear that this pattern may do violence to the content: the fullness of the Biblical proclamation concerning the office and the work of Christ may be lost if one seeks to reduce or confine the Biblical titles of honor applied to Christ and the Biblical designations of His office to the triplex munus. Among them is Werner Elert, who is intent upon letting the Biblical proclamation speak in all its multiplicity

Reflective equilibrium on the fringe : The tragic threefold story of a failed methodology for logical theorising

    Get PDF
Reflective equilibrium, as a methodology for the ‘formation of log- ics’, fails on the fringe, where intricate details can make or break a logical the- ory. On the fringe, the process of theorification cannot be methodologically governed by anything like reflective equilibrium. When logical theorising gets tricky, there is nothing on the pre-theoretical side on which our theoretical claims can reflect of—at least not in any meaningful way. Indeed, the fringe is exclusively the domain of theoretical negotiations and the methodological power of reflective equilibrium is merely nominal.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

The Death of Tragedy: Examining Nietzsche’s Return to the Greeks

In what follows, I will demonstrate how necessary the balance between Apollo and Dionysus is, how it exists in tragedy, and how it is destroyed. In my first chapter, I will discuss the Apolline and Dionysian powers, giving some background on Apollo and Dionysus. I will then explore the struggle between the two powers, noting the specific role of the Silenic wisdom. In the second chapter, I will examine several tragedies in light of these two powers, culminating in a discussion of Euripides’ Bacchae. This discussion will demonstrate how the Apolline and Dionysiac powers were at work on the tragic stage, how they were balanced, and how that balance was destroyed

Exploring Collegiate Perceptions of Feminism Through Bem’s Gender Schema Theory

    Get PDF
Utilizing framework analysis (Pope, Ziebland, & Mays, 2000) and Bem’s (1981) gender schema theory, this study provides results from eight focus groups wherein an interdisciplinary team met with seven student organizations to discuss the interplay of feminism and interpersonal relationships. Findings suggest the more confident students feel in their conceptualization of feminism as promoting equality, the more likely they were to report comfort with friends and romantic relationships. Programming and policy implications for college campuses are explored
