Major project team learning:examining building information modelling

    Get PDF
The speed of technological advancement of software development drives the need for individual and team learning to exploit these developments for competitive advantage. Using a major long term redevelopment as a case study a review of learning processes and project team learning in the context of a voluntary approach to adopting of BIM prior to 2016 is examined. The speed of adoption of BIM across a large redevelopment project covering several years is variable and the differences of preparedness between team members from different organisations raises the question of how effective the project team can be in sharing learning and increasing the speed of adoption of BIM. The benefits of understanding the project environment as a formal learning context are recognised where teams are working in partnering arrangements but the focus is usually on post project review of what went wrong with little time to critically evaluate other variables. Knowledge Management has the potential to help understand and then facilitate greater participation amongst stakeholders in project team learning. The research team undertook decision mapping and knowledge elicitation techniques and applied these to the Dundee Waterfront to identify key factors relevant to successful project management, enabling the Waterfront Project Team to understand current practice. The effectiveness of project team learning in relation to BIM within this long-term major redevelopment is influenced by positive motivational drivers for individuals to learn how to use and apply BIM, the level of organisational support for learning and professional development and the project information and communication systems. In practice the current approach to sharing of knowledge within the project team indicates a fragmented approach in relation to the adoption and application of BIM to managing construction projects

Controlled ecological life support system breadboard project, 1988

The Closed Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) Breadboard Project, NASA's effort to develop the technology required to produce a functioning bioregenerative system, is discussed. The different phases of the project and its current status are described. The relationship between the project components are shown, and major project activities for fiscal years 1989 to 1993 are listed. The Biomass Production Chamber (BPC) became operational and tests of wheat as a single crop are nearing completion

Important Criteria For Industrialized Building Systems From The Prespectives Of Major Project Partcipants

    Get PDF
The revolution in the building industry has resulted in many new building systems being introduced. Consequently, the principal project participants are often faced with decision involving the selection of an appropriate building system. Hence, the research presented in the study focuses on the importance of criteria in selecting the most appropriate building system. It also presents a proposed evaluation model that serves as a guideline for professionals in the industry to perform an initial feasibility study on the selection of industrialized building system.Based on the literature search, the relevant criteria were grouped into six categories: Project Objectives Criteria, Project Characteristics Criteria, Project Constraint Criteria, Technical Oriented Criteria, Performance Oriented Criteria, and Resources Oriented Criteria. The importances of these criteria were identified through a mailed questionnaire, which was employed as the research methodology. From the importance or priorities of criteria obtained from the questionnaire survey, the relationship of criteria among principal project participants was a.'1alyzed. It has found that the criteria among Clients, Architects, and Engineers are strongly correlated, except the criteria of Contractor. In addition, it has also been found that the criteria among principal project participants are independent from methods of construction, methods of contracting and types of project. The proposed evaluation model is set up based on the Analytical Hierarchy Procedure, which enables to set up complex problems involving attributes, subattributes, sub-subattributes, and so on, in an orderly, structured manner. Beside organizing the tangible and intangible decision criteria in a systematic manner, it also provides a structured yet relatively simple solution to the decision-making problems related to selection of an appropriate building system for implementation. As a result of the research, there will be documented sources of information for the selection of an appropriate building system. Moreover, the selection of an appropriate building system can be performed in a systematic and effective method

Black Culture In A Post-Soul Era (ENGL 068) Syllabus

    Get PDF
Generations of African American writers, artists, and intellectuals have emerged since the 1960s to reconsider the meaning of Blackness in the wake of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements that preceded them. Supported by historical and critical studies, we examine how Black novelists, playwrights, and poets in the ‘post-soul’ era have dealt with a complex of shifting, but interconnected, concerns, including the imperatives of racial representation in a society increasingly driven by mass consumption and global media, the contentious discourses of sexual politics, and the polarization of classes within Black America. For this version of the course, the major project entails producing a Wikipedia article on a topic relevant to African American literature and culture from the 1970s to the present

Variational objective analysis for cyclone studies

Significant accomplishments during 1987 to 1988 are summarized with regard to each of the major project components. Model 1 requires satisfaction of two nonlinear horizontal momentum equations, the integrated continuity equation, and the hydrostatic equation. Model 2 requires satisfaction of model 1 plus the thermodynamic equation for a dry atmosphere. Model 3 requires satisfaction of model 2 plus the radiative transfer equation. Model 4 requires satisfaction of model 3 plus a moisture conservation equation and a parameterization for moist processes

Housing - Las Vegas and the Middle Class

Brookings Mountain West presents an event focusing on housing as part of “Las Vegas and the Middle Class,” a major project exploring public policy initiatives designed to improve the quality of life of the middle class in Las Vegas and to increase the number of people rising to join its ranks. Through independent, non-partisan analysis and policy development, we seek to advance public understanding of the challenges facing the middle class in Las Vegas, as well as barriers to upward mobility. This event features presentations that examine Las Vegas as a model for understanding issues critical to the growth of the middle class. Following the presentations, a panel discussion will allow the speakers to reflect upon the current state and future of the middle class in Las Vegas
