High throughput spatial convolution filters on FPGAs
Digital signal processing (DSP) on field- programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) has long been appealing because of the inherent parallelism in these computations that can be easily exploited to accelerate such algorithms. FPGAs have evolved significantly to further enhance the mapping of these algorithms, included additional hard blocks, such as the DSP blocks found in modern FPGAs. Although these DSP blocks can offer more efficient mapping of DSP computations, they are primarily designed for 1-D filter structures. We present a study on spatial convolutional filter implementations on FPGAs, optimizing around the structure of the DSP blocks to offer high throughput while maintaining the coefficient flexibility that other published architectures usually sacrifice. We show that it is possible to implement large filters for large 4K resolution image frames at frame rates of 30–60 FPS, while maintaining functional flexibility

An adaptive envelope analysis in a wireless sensor network for bearing fault diagnosis using fast kurtogram algorithm
This paper proposes a scheme to improve the performance of applying envelope analysis in a wireless sensor network for bearing fault diagnosis. The fast kurtogram is realized on the host computer for determining an optimum band-pass filter for the envelope analysis that is implemented on the wireless sensor node to extract the low frequency fault information. Therefore, the vibration signal can be monitored over the bandwidth limited wireless sensor network with both intelligence and real-time performance. Test results have proved that the diagnostic information for different bearing faults can be successfully extracted using the optimum band-pass filter
Toward Early-Warning Detection of Gravitational Waves from Compact Binary Coalescence
Rapid detection of compact binary coalescence (CBC) with a network of
advanced gravitational-wave detectors will offer a unique opportunity for
multi-messenger astronomy. Prompt detection alerts for the astronomical
community might make it possible to observe the onset of electromagnetic
emission from (CBC). We demonstrate a computationally practical filtering
strategy that could produce early-warning triggers before gravitational
radiation from the final merger has arrived at the detectors.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, published in ApJ. Reformatted preprint with

Analysis and application of digital spectral warping in analog and mixed-signal testing
Spectral warping is a digital signal processing transform which shifts the frequencies contained within a signal along the frequency axis. The Fourier transform coefficients of a warped signal correspond to frequency-domain 'samples' of the original signal which are unevenly spaced along the frequency axis. This property allows the technique to be efficiently used for DSP-based analog and mixed-signal testing. The analysis and application of spectral warping for test signal generation, response analysis, filter design, frequency response evaluation, etc. are discussed in this paper along with examples of the software and hardware implementation
Programmable Logic Devices in Experimental Quantum Optics
We discuss the unique capabilities of programmable logic devices (PLD's) for
experimental quantum optics and describe basic procedures of design and
implementation. Examples of advanced applications include optical metrology and
feedback control of quantum dynamical systems. As a tutorial illustration of
the PLD implementation process, a field programmable gate array (FPGA)
controller is used to stabilize the output of a Fabry-Perot cavity
