    Tensile force and bond stress of longitudinal reinforcemenet in heavily reinforced concrete beam

    This dissertation presents an experimental study related to the tensile force and bond stress of longitudinal reinforcement in heavily reinforced concrete beam. The test variables in this study include the ratio of longitudinal and shear reinforcement. The beam specimens are simply supported with two point load with 130mm wide, 230mm deep and 1800mm long. The tensile force behavior and bond stress of longitudinal reinforcement is observed at support region. From experimental and analytical analysis, all beam specimens are not encounter failure in bond at support region. The beam with higher longitudinal and shear reinforcement ratio experienced lower bond stress compared to the lower longitudinal and shear reinforcement ratio. Besides that, the tensile force at the support is increased significantly after the occurrence of the diagonal cracks. As the reinforcement in the middle beam yield, the tensile force at the support stops increasing. Additionally, a computer program developed to determine the bond stress-slip curve at the support zone by applying Second Order Runge-Kutta method. Bond stress along longitudinal reinforcement beyond the outer part of the support also examined theoretically using local bond stress-slip model that modified from CEB-FIP Model Code 1990

    The theoretical derivation of the set of equations is discussed which is applicable to modeling the dynamic characteristics of aeroelastically-scaled models flown on the two-cable mount system in a 16 ft transonic dynamics tunnel. The computer program provided for the analysis is also described. The program calculates model trim conditions as well as 3 DOF longitudinal and lateral/directional dynamic conditions for various flying cable and snubber cable configurations.     A comprehensive aerodynamic analysis program based on linearized potential theory is described. The solution treats thickness and attitude problems at subsonic and supersonic speeds. Three dimensional configurations with or without jet flaps having multiple nonplanar surfaces of arbitrary planform and open or closed slender bodies or noncircular contour are analyzed. Longitudinal and lateral-directional static and rotary derivative solutions are generated. The analysis is implemented on a time sharing system in conjunction with an input tablet digitizer and an interactive graphics input/output display and editing terminal to maximize its responsiveness to the preliminary analysis problem. Nominal case computation time of 45 CPU seconds on the CDC 175 for a 200 panel simulation indicates the program provides an efficient analysis for systematically performing various aerodynamic configuration tradeoff and evaluation studies

    New Evidence on Workplace Education

    This paper presents an analysis of the impact of a workplace education program that was administered by a community college at two companies. One of the companies we study is in the manufacturing sector and the other is in the service sector. The analysis relies on longitudinal administrative data and cross-sectional survey data. We examine a broad range of outcome variables, including workers' earnings, performance awards, job attendance, and subjective performance measures. Our main finding is that the program had a small, positive impact on earnings at the manufacturing company, but an insignificant impact at the service company. We also find that the training program had a positive association with the incidence of job bids, upgrades, performance awards, and job attendance. At the manufacturing company, occupational courses, such as blue print reading, had the largest impact.

    Improving nutritional status through behavioral change: lessons from Madagascar

    This paper provides evidence of the effects of a large-scale intervention that focuses on the quality of nutritional and child care inputs during the early stages of life. The empirical strategy uses a combination of double-difference and weighting estimators in a longitudinal survey to address the purposive placement of participating communities and estimate the effect of the availability of the program at the community level on nutritional outcomes. The authors find that the program helped 0-5 year old children in the participating communities to bridge the gap in weight for age z-scores and the incidence of underweight. The program also had significant effects in protecting long-term nutritional outcomes (height for age z-scores and incidence of stunting) against an underlying negative trend in the absence of the program. Importantly, the effect of the program exhibits substantial heterogeneity: gains in nutritional outcomes are larger for more educated mothers and for villages with better infrastructure. The program enables the analysis to isolate responsiveness to information provision and disentangle the effect of knowledge in the education effect on nutritional outcomes. The results are suggestive of important complementarities among child care, maternal education, and community infrastructure

    Helicity Parton Distributions from Spin Asymmetries in W-Boson Production at RHIC

    We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section and longitudinal spin asymmetry in single-inclusive charged-lepton production, pp -> l X, at RHIC, where the lepton is produced in the decay of an electroweak gauge boson. Our calculation is presented in terms of a multi-purpose Monte-Carlo integration program that may be readily used to include experimental spin asymmetry data in a global analysis of helicity parton densities. We perform a toy global analysis, studying the impact of anticipated RHIC data on our knowledge about the polarized anti-quark distributions.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures included.
