Streaming and User Behaviour in Omnidirectional Videos
Omnidirectional videos (ODVs) have gone beyond the passive paradigm of traditional video,
offering higher degrees of immersion and interaction. The revolutionary novelty of this technology is the possibility for users to interact with the surrounding environment, and to feel a
sense of engagement and presence in a virtual space. Users are clearly the main driving force of
immersive applications and consequentially the services need to be properly tailored to them.
In this context, this chapter highlights the importance of the new role of users in ODV streaming applications, and thus the need for understanding their behaviour while navigating within
ODVs. A comprehensive overview of the research efforts aimed at advancing ODV streaming
systems is also presented. In particular, the state-of-the-art solutions under examination in this
chapter are distinguished in terms of system-centric and user-centric streaming approaches: the
former approach comes from a quite straightforward extension of well-established solutions for
the 2D video pipeline while the latter one takes the benefit of understanding users’ behaviour
and enable more personalised ODV streaming
Virtual transcendence experiences: Exploring technical and design challenges in multi-sensory environments
In this paper 1, we introduce the concept of Virtual Transcendence Experience (VTE) as a response to the interactions of several users sharing several immersive experiences through different media channels. For that, we review the current body of knowledge that has led to the development of a VTE system. This is followed by a
discussion of current technical and design challenges that could support the implementation of this concept. This discussion has informed the VTE framework (VTEf), which integrates different layers of experiences, including the role of each user and the technical challenges involved. We conclude this paper with suggestions for two scenarios and recommendations for the implementation of a system that could support VTEs
Enhancing the broadcasted TV consumption experience with broadband omnidirectional video content
[EN] The current wide range of heterogeneous consumption devices and delivery technologies, offers the opportunity to provide related contents in order to enhance and enrich the TV consumption experience. This paper describes a solution to handle the delivery and synchronous consumption of traditional broadcast TV content and related broadband omnidirectional video content. The solution is intended to support both hybrid (broadcast/broadband) delivery technologies and has been designed to be compatible with the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) standard. In particular, some specifications of HbbTV, such as the use of global timestamps or discovery mechanisms, have been adopted. However, additional functionalities have been designed to achieve accurate synchronization and to support the playout of omnidirectional video content in current consumption devices. In order to prove that commercial hybrid environments could be immediately enhanced with this type of content, the proposed solution has been included in a testbed, and objectively and subjectively evaluated. Regarding the omnidirectional video content, the two most common types of projections are supported: equirectangular and cube map. The results of the objective assessment show that the playout of broadband delivered omnidirectional video content in companion devices can be accurately synchronized with the playout on TV of traditional broadcast 2D content. Omnidirectional view and multi-modal streaming in 3D tele-immersion system
3D Tele-immersion (3DTI) technology allows full-body, multi-modal content delivery among geographically dispersed users. In 3DTI, user’s 3D model will be captured by multiple RGB-D (color plus depth) cameras surround- ing user’s body. In addition, various sensors (e.g., motion sensors, medical sensors, wearable gaming consoles, etc.) specified by the application will be included to deliver a multi-modal experience.
In a traditional 2D live video streaming system, the interactivity of end users, choosing a specified viewpoint, has been crippled by the fact that they can only choose to see the physical scene captured by a physical camera, but not between two physical cameras. However, 3DTI system makes it possible rendering a 3D space where the viewers can view physical scene from arbitrary viewpoint.
In this thesis, we present systematic solutions of omnidirectional view in 3D tele-immersion system in a real-time manner and in an on-demand streaming manner, called FreeViewer and OmniViewer, respectively. we provide a complete multi-modal 3D video streaming/rendering solution, which achieves the feature of omnidirectional view in monoscopic 3D systems

computing deployment. This paper proposes a novel
solution for decomposing and distributing the end-to-end 360
video streaming service across three computing tiers, namely
cloud, edge and constrained fog, in order of proximity to the
end user client. The streaming service is aided with an adaptive
viewport technique. The proposed solution is based on the H2020
5G-CORAL system architecture using micro-services-based design
and a unified orchestration and control across all three tiers
based on Fog05. Performance evaluation of the proposed solution
shows noticeable reduction in bandwidth consumption, energy
consumption, and deployment costs, as compared to a solution
where the streaming service is all delivered out of one computing
