    Toward Enhanced State of Charge Estimation of Lithium-ion Batteries Using Optimized Machine Learning Techniques.

    State of charge (SOC) is a crucial index used in the assessment of electric vehicle (EV) battery storage systems. Thus, SOC estimation of lithium-ion batteries has been widely investigated because of their fast charging, long-life cycle, and high energy density characteristics. However, precise SOC assessment of lithium-ion batteries remains challenging because of their varying characteristics under different working environments. Machine learning techniques have been widely used to design an advanced SOC estimation method without the information of battery chemical reactions, battery models, internal properties, and additional filters. Here, the capacity of optimized machine learning techniques are presented toward enhanced SOC estimation in terms of learning capability, accuracy, generalization performance, and convergence speed. We validate the proposed method through lithium-ion battery experiments, EV drive cycles, temperature, noise, and aging effects. We show that the proposed method outperforms several state-of-the-art approaches in terms of accuracy, adaptability, and robustness under diverse operating conditions

    A critical review of improved deep learning methods for the remaining useful life prediction of lithium-ion batteries.

    As widely used for secondary energy storage, lithium-ion batteries have become the core component of the power supply system and accurate remaining useful life prediction is the key to ensure its reliability. Because of the complex working characteristics of lithium-ion batteries as well as the model parameter changing along with the aging process, the accuracy of the online remaining useful life prediction is difficult but urgent to be improved for the reliable power supply application. The deep learning algorithm improves the accuracy of the remaining useful life prediction, which also reduces the characteristic testing time requirement, providing the possibility to improve the power profitability of predictive energy management. This article analyzes, reviews, classifies, and compares different adaptive mathematical models on deep learning algorithms for the remaining useful life prediction. The features are identified for the modeling ability, according to which the adaptive prediction methods are classified. The specific criteria are defined to evaluate different modeling accuracy in the deep learning calculation procedure. The key features of effective life prediction are used to draw relevant conclusions and suggestions are provided, in which the high-accuracy deep convolutional neural network — extreme learning machine algorithm is chosen to be utilized for the stable remaining useful life prediction of lithium-ion batteries

    Overview of Machine Learning Methods for Lithium-Ion Battery Remaining Useful Lifetime Prediction

    Lithium-ion batteries play an indispensable role, from portable electronic devices to electric vehicles and home storage systems. Even though they are characterized by superior performance than most other storage technologies, their lifetime is not unlimited and has to be predicted to ensure the economic viability of the battery application. Furthermore, to ensure the optimal battery system operation, the remaining useful lifetime (RUL) prediction has become an essential feature of modern battery management systems (BMSs). Thus, the prediction of RUL of Lithium-ion batteries has become a hot topic for both industry and academia. The purpose of this work is to review, classify, and compare different machine learning (ML)-based methods for the prediction of the RUL of Lithium-ion batteries. First, this article summarizes and classifies various Lithium-ion battery RUL estimation methods that have been proposed in recent years. Secondly, an innovative method was selected for evaluation and compared in terms of accuracy and complexity. DNN is more suitable for RUL prediction due to its strong independent learning ability and generalization ability. In addition, the challenges and prospects of BMS and RUL prediction research are also put forward. Finally, the development of various methods is summarized

    Neural Network-Based Li-Ion Battery Aging Model at Accelerated C-Rate

    Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are widely used in electric vehicles (EVs) because of their high energy density, low self-discharge, and superior performance. Despite this, Li-ion batteries’ performance and reliability become critical as they lose their capacity with increasing charge and discharging cycles. Moreover, Li-ion batteries are subject to aging in EVs due to load variations in discharge. Monitoring the battery cycle life at various discharge rates would enable the battery management system (BMS) to implement control parameters to resolve the aging issue. In this paper, a battery lifetime degradation model is proposed at an accelerated current rate (C-rate). Furthermore, an ideal lifetime discharge rate within the standard C-rate and beyond the C-rate is proposed. The consequence of discharging at an accelerated C-rate on the cycle life of the batteries is thoroughly investigated. Moreover, the battery degradation model is investigated with a deep learning algorithm-based feed-forward neural network (FNN), and a recurrent neural network (RNN) with long short-term memory (LSTM) layer. A comparative assessment of performance of the developed models is carried out and it is shown that the LSTM-RNN battery aging model has superior performance at accelerated C-rate compared to the traditional FNN network

    An improved bidirectional gate recurrent unit combined with smoothing flter algorithm for state of energy estimation of lithium-ion batteries.

    The accurate estimation of state of energy (SOE) is the key to the rational energy distribution of lithium-ion battery based energy storage equipment. This paper proposes an improved bidirectional gate recursive element combined with a time-varying bounded layer based smooth variable structure filtering algorithm. First, based on the solid temporal nature of the estimated parameters, a BiGRU neural network structure is constructed to strengthen further the influence of past and future information on the current estimates. Then, based on the traditional variable structure filtering, a time-varying bounded layer smoothing mechanism with saturation restriction (TS-VBL) is proposed to smooth the output of BiGRU to obtain a more accurate estimate. Finally, the test was conducted under 15℃ hybrid pulse power characterization (HPPC) and 35℃ Beijing bus dynamic stress test (BBDST). Compared with other algorithms, the BiGRU-TSVSF algorithm has a minor maximum estimation error of 0.00495 and 0.00722, respectively. The experimental results show that the algorithm has high precision and robustness and is of great value to the energy storage research of energy storage equipment

    The Solar Dryer Dome (SDD), an independent energy system equipped with Artificial Intelligence to support the drying process, has been developed. However, inaccurate state-of-charge (SOC) predictions in each battery cell resulted in the vulnerability of the battery to over-charging and over-discharging, which accelerated the battery performance degradation. This research aims to develop an accurate neural network model for predicting the SOC of battery-cell level. The model aims to maintain the battery cell balance under dynamic load applications. It is accompanied by a developed dashboard to monitor and provide crucial information for early maintenance of the battery in the SDD. The results show that the neural network estimates the SOC with the lowest MAE of 0.175, followed by the Random Forest and support vector machine methods with MAE of 0.223 and 0.259, respectively. A dashboard was developed to help farmers monitor batteries efficiently.
