A Framework for Effectively Integrating Hard and Soft Syntactic Rules into Phrase Based Translation

Source side pre-ordering using recurrent neural networks for English-Myanmar machine translation
Word reordering has remained one of the challenging problems for machine translation when translating between language pairs with different word orders e.g. English and Myanmar. Without reordering between these languages, a source sentence may be translated directly with similar word order and translation can not be meaningful. Myanmar is a subject-objectverb (SOV) language and an effective reordering is essential for translation. In this paper, we applied a pre-ordering approach using recurrent neural networks to pre-order words of the source Myanmar sentence into target English’s word order. This neural pre-ordering model is automatically derived from parallel word-aligned data with syntactic and lexical features based on dependency parse trees of the source sentences. This can generate arbitrary permutations that may be non-local on the sentence and can be combined into English-Myanmar machine translation. We exploited the model to reorder English sentences into Myanmar-like word order as a preprocessing stage for machine translation, obtaining improvements quality comparable to baseline rule-based pre-ordering approach on asian language treebank (ALT) corpus
Fine-Grained Linguistic Soft Constraints on Statistical Natural Language Processing Models
This dissertation focuses on effective combination of data-driven natural language processing (NLP) approaches with linguistic knowledge sources that are based on manual text annotation or word grouping according to semantic commonalities. I gainfully apply fine-grained linguistic soft constraints -- of syntactic or semantic nature -- on statistical NLP models, evaluated in end-to-end state-of-the-art statistical machine translation (SMT) systems. The introduction of semantic soft constraints involves intrinsic evaluation on word-pair similarity ranking tasks, extension from words to phrases, application in a novel distributional paraphrase generation technique, and an introduction of a generalized framework of which these soft semantic and syntactic constraints can be viewed as instances, and in which they can be potentially combined.
Fine granularity is key in the successful combination of these soft constraints, in many cases. I show how to softly constrain SMT models by adding fine-grained weighted features, each preferring translation of only a specific syntactic constituent. Previous attempts using coarse-grained features yielded negative results. I also show how to softly constrain corpus-based semantic models of words (“distributional profiles”) to effectively create word-sense-aware models, by using semantic word grouping information found in a manually compiled thesaurus. Previous attempts, using hard constraints and resulting in aggregated, coarse-grained models, yielded lower gains.
A novel paraphrase generation technique incorporating these soft semantic constraints is then also evaluated in a SMT system. This paraphrasing technique is based on the Distributional Hypothesis. The main advantage of this novel technique over current “pivoting” techniques for paraphrasing is the independence from parallel texts, which are a limited resource. The evaluation is done by augmenting translation models with paraphrase-based translation rules, where fine-grained scoring of paraphrase-based rules yields significantly higher gains.

In many cases there are alternative paths of generating a paraphrase-based translation rule. Each of these paths reinforces a dedicated score for the “goodness” of the new translation rule. This augmented score is then used as a soft constraint, in a weighted log-linear feature, letting the translation model learn how much to “trust” the paraphrase-based translation rules.
The work reported here is the first to use distributional semantic similarity measures to improve performance of an end-to-end phrase-based SMT system. The unified framework for statistical NLP models with soft linguistic constraints enables, in principle, the combination of both semantic and syntactic constraints -- and potentially other constraints, too -- in a single SMT model
A Survey of Word Reordering in Statistical Machine Translation: Computational Models and Language Phenomena
Word reordering is one of the most difficult aspects of statistical machine
translation (SMT), and an important factor of its quality and efficiency.
Despite the vast amount of research published to date, the interest of the
community in this problem has not decreased, and no single method appears to be
strongly dominant across language pairs. Instead, the choice of the optimal
approach for a new translation task still seems to be mostly driven by
empirical trials. To orientate the reader in this vast and complex research
area, we present a comprehensive survey of word reordering viewed as a
statistical modeling challenge and as a natural language phenomenon. The survey
describes in detail how word reordering is modeled within different
string-based and tree-based SMT frameworks and as a stand-alone task, including
systematic overviews of the literature in advanced reordering modeling. We then
question why some approaches are more successful than others in different
language pairs. We argue that, besides measuring the amount of reordering, it
is important to understand which kinds of reordering occur in a given language
pair. To this end, we conduct a qualitative analysis of word reordering
phenomena in a diverse sample of language pairs, based on a large collection of
linguistic knowledge. Empirical results in the SMT literature are shown to
support the hypothesis that a few linguistic facts can be very useful to
anticipate the reordering characteristics of a language pair and to select the

Reordering in statistical machine translation
PhDMachine translation is a challenging task that its difficulties arise from several characteristics
of natural language. The main focus of this work is on reordering as one of
the major problems in MT and statistical MT, which is the method investigated in this
research. The reordering problem in SMT originates from the fact that not all the words
in a sentence can be consecutively translated. This means words must be skipped and
be translated out of their order in the source sentence to produce a fluent and grammatically
correct sentence in the target language. The main reason that reordering is
needed is the fundamental word order differences between languages. Therefore, reordering
becomes a more dominant issue, the more source and target languages are
structurally different.
The aim of this thesis is to study the reordering phenomenon by proposing new methods
of dealing with reordering in SMT decoders and evaluating the effectiveness of
the methods and the importance of reordering in the context of natural language processing
tasks. In other words, we propose novel ways of performing the decoding to
improve the reordering capabilities of the SMT decoder and in addition we explore
the effect of improving the reordering on the quality of specific NLP tasks, namely
named entity recognition and cross-lingual text association. Meanwhile, we go beyond
reordering in text association and present a method to perform cross-lingual text fragment
alignment, based on models of divergence from randomness.
The main contribution of this thesis is a novel method named dynamic distortion,
which is designed to improve the ability of the phrase-based decoder in performing
reordering by adjusting the distortion parameter based on the translation context. The
model employs a discriminative reordering model, which is combining several fea-

tures including lexical and syntactic, to predict the necessary distortion limit for each
sentence and each hypothesis expansion. The discriminative reordering model is also
integrated into the decoder as an extra feature. The method achieves substantial improvements
over the baseline without increase in the decoding time by avoiding reordering
in unnecessary positions.
Another novel method is also presented to extend the phrase-based decoder to dynamically
chunk, reorder, and apply phrase translations in tandem. Words inside the chunks
are moved together to enable the decoder to make long-distance reorderings to capture
the word order differences between languages with different sentence structures.
Another aspect of this work is the task-based evaluation of the reordering methods and
other translation algorithms used in the phrase-based SMT systems. With more successful
SMT systems, performing multi-lingual and cross-lingual tasks through translating
becomes more feasible. We have devised a method to evaluate the performance
of state-of-the art named entity recognisers on the text translated by a SMT decoder.
Specifically, we investigated the effect of word reordering and incorporating reordering
models in improving the quality of named entity extraction.
In addition to empirically investigating the effect of translation in the context of crosslingual
document association, we have described a text fragment alignment algorithm
to find sections of the two documents in different languages, that are content-wise related.
The algorithm uses similarity measures based on divergence from randomness
and word-based translation models to perform text fragment alignment on a collection
of documents in two different languages.
All the methods proposed in this thesis are extensively empirically examined. We have
tested all the algorithms on common translation collections used in different evaluation
campaigns. Well known automatic evaluation metrics are used to compare the
suggested methods to a state-of-the art baseline and results are analysed and discussed

Applying science of learning in education: Infusing psychological science into the curriculum
The field of specialization known as the science of learning is not, in fact, one field. Science of learning is a term that serves as an umbrella for many lines of research, theory, and application. A term with an even wider reach is Learning Sciences (Sawyer, 2006). The present book represents a sliver, albeit a substantial one, of the scholarship on the science of learning and its application in educational settings (Science of Instruction, Mayer 2011). Although much, but not all, of what is presented in this book is focused on learning in college and university settings, teachers of all academic levels may find the recommendations made by chapter authors of service. The overarching theme of this book is on the interplay between the science of learning, the science of instruction, and the science of assessment (Mayer, 2011). The science of learning is a systematic and empirical approach to understanding how people learn. More formally, Mayer (2011) defined the science of learning as the “scientific study of how people learn” (p. 3). The science of instruction (Mayer 2011), informed in part by the science of learning, is also on display throughout the book. Mayer defined the science of instruction as the “scientific study of how to help people learn” (p. 3). Finally, the assessment of student learning (e.g., learning, remembering, transferring knowledge) during and after instruction helps us determine the effectiveness of our instructional methods. Mayer defined the science of assessment as the “scientific study of how to determine what people know” (p.3). Most of the research and applications presented in this book are completed within a science of learning framework. Researchers first conducted research to understand how people learn in certain controlled contexts (i.e., in the laboratory) and then they, or others, began to consider how these understandings could be applied in educational settings. Work on the cognitive load theory of learning, which is discussed in depth in several chapters of this book (e.g., Chew; Lee and Kalyuga; Mayer; Renkl), provides an excellent example that documents how science of learning has led to valuable work on the science of instruction. Most of the work described in this book is based on theory and research in cognitive psychology. We might have selected other topics (and, thus, other authors) that have their research base in behavior analysis, computational modeling and computer science, neuroscience, etc. We made the selections we did because the work of our authors ties together nicely and seemed to us to have direct applicability in academic settings
