    Q-Learning Induced Artificial Bee Colony for Noisy Optimization

    The paper proposes a novel approach to adaptive selection of sample size for a trial solution of an evolutionary algorithm when noise of unknown distribution contaminates the objective surface. The sample size of a solution here is adapted based on the noisy fitness profile in the local surrounding of the given solution. The fitness estimate and the fitness variance of a sub-population surrounding the given solution are jointly used to signify the degree of noise contamination in its local neighborhood (LN). The adaptation of sample size based on the characteristics of the fitness landscape in the LN of a solution is realized here with the temporal difference Q-learning (TDQL). The merit of the present work lies in utilizing the reward-penalty based reinforcement learning mechanism of TDQL for sample size adaptation. This sidesteps the prerequisite setting of any specific functional form of relationship between the sample size requirement of a solution and the noisy fitness profile in its LN. Experiments undertaken reveal that the proposed algorithms, realized with artificial bee colony, significantly outperform the existing counterparts and the state-of-the-art algorithms

    Preventing premature convergence and proving the optimality in evolutionary algorithms

Interval-based techniques, on the other hand, yield a numerical proof of optimality of the solution. However, they may fail to converge within a reasonable time due to their inability to quickly compute a good approximation of the global minimum and their exponential complexity. The contribution of this paper is a hybrid algorithm called Charibde in which a particular EA, Differential Evolution, cooperates with a Branch and Bound algorithm endowed with interval propagation techniques. It prevents premature convergence toward local optima and outperforms both deterministic and stochastic existing approaches. We demonstrate its efficiency on a benchmark of highly multimodal problems, for which we provide previously unknown global minima and certification of optimality

    A Channel Ranking And Selection Scheme Based On Channel Occupancy And SNR For Cognitive Radio Systems

    Wireless networks and information traffic have grown exponentially over the last decade. Consequently, an increase in demand for radio spectrum frequency bandwidth has resulted. Recent studies have shown that with the current fixed spectrum allocation (FSA), radio frequency band utilization ranges from 15% to 85%. Therefore, there are spectrum holes that are not utilized all the time by the licensed users, and, thus the radio spectrum is inefficiently exploited. To solve the problem of scarcity and inefficient utilization of the spectrum resources, dynamic spectrum access has been proposed as a solution to enable sharing and using available frequency channels. With dynamic spectrum allocation (DSA), unlicensed users can access and use licensed, available channels when primary users are not transmitting. Cognitive Radio technology is one of the next generation technologies that will allow efficient utilization of spectrum resources by enabling DSA. However, dynamic spectrum allocation by a cognitive radio system comes with the challenges of accurately detecting and selecting the best channel based on the channelâs availability and quality of service. Therefore, the spectrum sensing and analysis processes of a cognitive radio system are essential to make accurate decisions. Different spectrum sensing techniques and channel selection schemes have been proposed. However, these techniques only consider the spectrum occupancy rate for selecting the best channel, which can lead to erroneous decisions. Other communication parameters, such as the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) should also be taken into account. Therefore, the spectrum decision-making process of a cognitive radio system must use techniques that consider spectrum occupancy and channel quality metrics to rank channels and select the best option. This thesis aims to develop a utility function based on spectrum occupancy and SNR measurements to model and rank the sensed channels. An evolutionary algorithm-based SNR estimation technique was developed, which enables adaptively varying key parameters of the existing Eigenvalue-based blind SNR estimation technique. The performance of the improved technique is compared to the existing technique. Results show the evolutionary algorithm-based estimation performing better than the existing technique. The utility-based channel ranking technique was developed by first defining channel utility function that takes into account SNR and spectrum occupancy. Different mathematical functions were investigated to appropriately model the utility of SNR and spectrum occupancy rate. A ranking table is provided with the utility values of the sensed channels and compared with the usual occupancy rate based channel ranking. According to the results, utility-based channel ranking provides a better scope of making an informed decision by considering both channel occupancy rate and SNR. In addition, the efficiency of several noise cancellation techniques was investigated. These techniques can be employed to get rid of the impact of noise on the received or sensed signals during spectrum sensing process of a cognitive radio system. Performance evaluation of these techniques was done using simulations and the results show that the evolutionary algorithm-based noise cancellation techniques, particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm perform better than the regular gradient descent based technique, which is the least-mean-square algorithm

    Electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), particularly those using motor-imagery (MI) data, have the potential to become groundbreaking technologies in both clinical and entertainment settings. MI data is generated when a subject imagines the movement of a limb. This paper reviews state-of-the-art signal processing techniques for MI EEG-based BCIs, with a particular focus on the feature extraction, feature selection and classification techniques used. It also summarizes the main applications of EEG-based BCIs, particularly those based on MI data, and finally presents a detailed discussion of the most prevalent challenges impeding the development and commercialization of EEG-based BCIs

    Local Halting Criteria for Stochastic Diffusion Search Using Nature-inspired Quorum Sensing

    Stochastic Diffusion Search (SDS) is a Swarm Intelligence algorithm in which a population of homogeneous agents locate a globally optimal solution in a search space through repeated iteration of partial evaluation and communication of hypotheses. In this work a variant of SDS, Quorum Sensing SDS (QSSDS), is developed in which agents employ only local knowledge to determine whether the swarm has successfully converged on a solution of sufficient quality, and should therefore halt. It is demonstrated that this criterion performs at least as well as SDS in locating the optimal solution in the search space, and that the parameters of Quorum Sensing SDS may be tuned to optimise behaviour towards a fast decision or a high quality solution. Additionally it is shown that Quorum Sensing SDS can be used as a model of distributed decision making and hence makes testable predictions about the capacities and abilities of swarms in nature

    A study of search neighbourhood in the bees algorithm

    The Bees Algorithm, a heuristic optimisation procedure that mimics bees foraging behaviour, is becoming more popular among swarm intelligence researchers. The algorithm involves neighbourhood and global search and is able to find promising solutions to complex multimodal optimisation problems. The purpose of neighbourhood search is to intensify the search effort around promising solutions, while global search is to enable avoidance of local optima. Despite numerous studies aimed at enhancing the Bees Algorithm, there have not been many attempts at studying neighbourhood search. This research investigated different kinds of neighbourhoods and their effects on neighbourhood search. First, the adaptive enlargement of the search neighbourhood was proposed. This idea was implemented in the Bees Algorithm and tested on a set of mathematical benchmarks. The modified algorithm was also tested on single objective engineering design problems. The experimental results obtained confirmed that the adaptive enlargement of the search neighbourhood improved the performance of the proposed algorithm. Normally, a symmetrical search neighbourhood is employed in the Bees Algorithm. As opposed to this practice, an asymmetrical search neighbourhood was tried in this work to determine the significance of neighbourhood symmetry. In addition to the mathematical benchmarks, the algorithm with an asymmetrical search neighbourhood was also tested on an engineering design problem. The analysis verified that under certain measurements of asymmetry, the proposed ii algorithm produced a similar performance as that of the Bees Algorithm. For this reason, it was concluded that users were free to employ either a symmetrical or an asymmetrical search neighbourhood in the Bees Algorithm. Finally, the combination of adaptive enlargement and reduction of the search neighbourhood was presented. In addition to the above mathematical benchmarks and engineering design problems, a multi-objective design optimisation exercise with constraints was selected to demonstrate the performance of the modified algorithm.     Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud

    Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithms’ performance on Amazon’s Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations.     Enhanced Bees Algorithm with fuzzy logic and Kalman filtering

    The Bees Algorithm is a new population-based optimisation procedure which employs a combination of global exploratory and local exploitatory search. This thesis introduces an enhanced version of the Bees Algorithm which implements a fuzzy logic system for greedy selection of local search sites. The proposed fuzzy greedy selection system reduces the number of parameters needed to run the Bees Algorithm. The proposed algorithm has been applied to a number of benchmark function optimisation problems to demonstrate its robustness and self-organising ability. The Bees Algorithm in both its basic and enhanced forms has been used to optimise the parameters of a fuzzy logic controller. The purpose of the controller is to stabilise and balance an under-actuated two-link acrobatic robot (ACROBOT) in the upright position. Kalman filtering, as a fast convergence gradient-based optimisation method, is introduced as an alternative to random neighbourhood search to guide worker bees speedily towards the optima of local search sites. The proposed method has been used to tune membership functions for a fuzzy logic system. Finally, the fuzzy greedy selection system is enhanced by using multiple independent criteria to select local search sites. The enhanced fuzzy selection system has again been used with Kalman filtering to speed up the Bees Algorithm. The resulting algorithm has been applied to train a Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network for wood defect identification. The results obtained show that the changes made to the Bees Algorithm in this research have significantly improved its performance.     Studying the effect of multisource Darwinian particle swarm optimization in search and rescue missions

    Robotic Swarm Intelligence is considered one of the hottest topics within the robotics research eld nowadays, for its major contributions to di erent elds of life from hobbyists, makers and expanding to military applications. It has also proven to be more effective and effcient than other robotic approaches targeting the same problem. Within this research, we targeted to test the hypothesis that using more than a single starting/ seeding point for a swarm to explore an unknown environment will yield better solutions, routes and cover more area of the search space within context of Search and Rescue applications domain. We tested such hypothesis via extending existing Particle swarm optimization techniques for search and rescue operations (i.e. Robotic Darwinian Particle Swarm Optimization and we split the swarm into smaller groups that start exploration from di erent seed positions, then took the convergence time average for di erent runs of simulations and recorded the results for quanti cation. The results presented in this work con rms the hypothesis we started with, and gives insight to how the number of robots contributing in the experiments a ect the quality of the results. This work also shows a direct correlation between the swarm size and the search space
