Learning a Complete Image Indexing Pipeline
To work at scale, a complete image indexing system comprises two components:
An inverted file index to restrict the actual search to only a subset that
should contain most of the items relevant to the query; An approximate distance
computation mechanism to rapidly scan these lists. While supervised deep
learning has recently enabled improvements to the latter, the former continues
to be based on unsupervised clustering in the literature. In this work, we
propose a first system that learns both components within a unifying neural
framework of structured binary encoding

Information extraction from multimedia web documents: an open-source platform and testbed
The LivingKnowledge project aimed to enhance the current state of the art in search, retrieval and knowledge management on the web by advancing the use of sentiment and opinion analysis within multimedia applications. To achieve this aim, a diverse set of novel and complementary analysis techniques have been integrated into a single, but extensible software platform on which such applications can be built. The platform combines state-of-the-art techniques for extracting facts, opinions and sentiment from multimedia documents, and unlike earlier platforms, it exploits both visual and textual techniques to support multimedia information retrieval. Foreseeing the usefulness of this software in the wider community, the platform has been made generally available as an open-source project. This paper describes the platform design, gives an overview of the analysis algorithms integrated into the system and describes two applications that utilise the system for multimedia information retrieval
The LSST Data Mining Research Agenda
We describe features of the LSST science database that are amenable to
scientific data mining, object classification, outlier identification, anomaly
detection, image quality assurance, and survey science validation. The data
mining research agenda includes: scalability (at petabytes scales) of existing
machine learning and data mining algorithms; development of grid-enabled
parallel data mining algorithms; designing a robust system for brokering
classifications from the LSST event pipeline (which may produce 10,000 or more
event alerts per night); multi-resolution methods for exploration of petascale
databases; indexing of multi-attribute multi-dimensional astronomical databases
(beyond spatial indexing) for rapid querying of petabyte databases; and more.Comment: 5 pages, Presented at the "Classification and Discovery in Large

STV-based Video Feature Processing for Action Recognition
In comparison to still image-based processes, video features can provide rich and intuitive information about dynamic events occurred over a period of time, such as human actions, crowd behaviours, and other subject pattern changes. Although substantial progresses have been made in the last decade on image processing and seen its successful applications in face matching and object recognition, video-based event detection still remains one of the most difficult challenges in computer vision research due to its complex continuous or discrete input signals, arbitrary dynamic feature definitions, and the often ambiguous analytical methods. In this paper, a Spatio-Temporal Volume (STV) and region intersection (RI) based 3D shape-matching method has been proposed to facilitate the definition and recognition of human actions recorded in videos. The distinctive characteristics and the performance gain of the devised approach stemmed from a coefficient factor-boosted 3D region intersection and matching mechanism developed in this research. This paper also reported the investigation into techniques for efficient STV data filtering to reduce the amount of voxels (volumetric-pixels) that need to be processed in each operational cycle in the implemented system. The encouraging features and improvements on the operational performance registered in the experiments have been discussed at the end
Off the Beaten Path: Let's Replace Term-Based Retrieval with k-NN Search
Retrieval pipelines commonly rely on a term-based search to obtain candidate
records, which are subsequently re-ranked. Some candidates are missed by this
approach, e.g., due to a vocabulary mismatch. We address this issue by
replacing the term-based search with a generic k-NN retrieval algorithm, where
a similarity function can take into account subtle term associations. While an
exact brute-force k-NN search using this similarity function is slow, we
demonstrate that an approximate algorithm can be nearly two orders of magnitude
faster at the expense of only a small loss in accuracy. A retrieval pipeline
using an approximate k-NN search can be more effective and efficient than the
term-based pipeline. This opens up new possibilities for designing effective
retrieval pipelines. Our software (including data-generating code) and
derivative data based on the Stack Overflow collection is available online
Query by String word spotting based on character bi-gram indexing
In this paper we propose a segmentation-free query by string word spotting
method. Both the documents and query strings are encoded using a recently
proposed word representa- tion that projects images and strings into a common
atribute space based on a pyramidal histogram of characters(PHOC). These
attribute models are learned using linear SVMs over the Fisher Vector
representation of the images along with the PHOC labels of the corresponding
strings. In order to search through the whole page, document regions are
indexed per character bi- gram using a similar attribute representation. On top
of that, we propose an integral image representation of the document using a
simplified version of the attribute model for efficient computation. Finally we
introduce a re-ranking step in order to boost retrieval performance. We show
state-of-the-art results for segmentation-free query by string word spotting in
single-writer and multi-writer standard datasetsComment: To be published in ICDAR201
