Interim evaluation of lifelong learning networks
The Open University's Centre for Higher Education Research and Information was commissioned in June 2007 to undertake a formative evaluation of Lifelong Learning Networks (LLNs). Research to inform the interim evaluation has been two-fold:
desk research of LLN documentation and
visits to and interviews with personnel involved in eight LLNs.
The report's main conclusion was that LLNs are making progress in terms of encouraging institutions to offer curricula and put in place procedures that, in the fullness of time, could make a significant difference to the coherence, clarity and certainty of progression opportunities for vocational learners. However, it went on to say that it is too soon to be able to make substantive and well-evidenced statements about LLNs' overall progress on meeting this overarching objective of the LLN initiative
Management consulting.
Including a lengthy, comprehensive introduction, this important collection brings together some of the most influential papers that have contributed to our understanding of management consultancy work. The two-volume set encompasses the breadth of conceptual and empirical perspectives and explores those key ideas that have helped to advance our knowledge of this intriguing area. The volumes are divided into a series of thematic sections, affording the reader easy access to a great resource of information. Professors Clark and Avakian have written an original introduction which provides a comprehensive overview of the literature
The politics of policy resistance: reconstructing higher education in Kosovo
This article considers attempts to incorporate lessons and transfer policies from Britain in the reconstruction of Higher Education in Kosovo after 1999. In doing so, it employs aspects of the lesson-drawing framework developed by Rose (1991 and 2001) and the related concepts of policy transfer and policy diffusion. Drawing on contributions from anthropology and democratization studies, we suggest development of the public policy frameworks for lesson drawing and policy transfer in circumstances characterised by asymmetric interdependence, in which the tactics and strategies of policy resistance by ‘subordinate’ recipient actors can be crucial. This article details the nature of policy resistance and sets out hypotheses for future research
Realizing Potential: The Impact of Business Incubation upon the Absorptive Capacity of New Technology Based Firms
This article explores the potential of university technology business incubators to enhance the
absorptive capacity of new technology-based firms. The research pursues three critical themes: it
employs the absorptive capacity construct to analyse and evaluate the potential of incubation to
strengthen the business model of new technology firms. It then explores the interaction between
founders and incubator directors, mentors and business advisers to assess how this might
enhance absorptive capacity. Finally, it indicates how such interactions can facilitate the transition
from potential to realised absorptive capacity. The article interrogates the incubation process by
using the absorptive capacity framework to evaluate how it might strengthen the business model
of new technology firms. The qualitative findings suggest that where founders, advisers, mentors
and incubator directors engage collaboratively to create an iterative dialogue which informs the
development of a viable business model, the process by which potential absorptive capacity can
be fully realised is substantially strengthened
