    The cat's cradle network

    In this paper we will argue that the representation of context in knowledge management is appropriately served by the representation of the knowledge networks in an historicised form. Characterising context as essentially extra to any particular knowledge representation, we argue that another dimension to these be modelled, rather than simply elaborating a form in its own terms. We present the formalism of the cat's cradle network, and show how it can be represented by an extension of the Pathfinder associative network that includes this temporal dimension, and allows evolutions of understandings to be traced. Grounding its semantics in communities of practice ensures utility and cohesiveness, which is lost when mere externalities of a representation are communicated in fully fledged forms. The scheme is general and subsumes other formalisms for knowledge representation. The cat's cradle network enables us to model such community-based social constructs as pattern languages, shared memory and patterns of trust and reliance, by placing their establishment in a structure that shows their essential temporality

    Events are frequently discussed in natural language, and their accurate identification is central to language understanding. Yet they are diverse and complex in ontology and reference; computational processing hence proves challenging. News provides a shared basis for communication by reporting events. We perform several studies into news event reference. One annotation study characterises each news report in terms of its update and topic events, but finds that topic is better consider through explicit references to background events. In this context, we propose the event linking task which—analogous to named entity linking or disambiguation—models the grounding of references to notable events. It defines the disambiguation of an event reference as a link to the archival article that first reports it. When two references are linked to the same article, they need not be references to the same event. Event linking hopes to provide an intuitive approximation to coreference, erring on the side of over-generation in contrast with the literature. The task is also distinguished in considering event references from multiple perspectives over time. We diagnostically evaluate the task by first linking references to past, newsworthy events in news and opinion pieces to an archive of the Sydney Morning Herald. The intensive annotation results in only a small corpus of 229 distinct links. However, we observe that a number of hyperlinks targeting online news correspond to event links. We thus acquire two large corpora of hyperlinks at very low cost. From these we learn weights for temporal and term overlap features in a retrieval system. These noisy data lead to significant performance gains over a bag-of-words baseline. While our initial system can accurately predict many event links, most will require deep linguistic processing for their disambiguation

    Extracting and Attributing Quotes in Text and Assessing them as Opinions

    News articles often report on the opinions that salient people have about important issues. While it is possible to infer an opinion from a person's actions, it is much more common to demonstrate that a person holds an opinion by reporting on what they have said. These instances of speech are called reported speech, and in this thesis we set out to detect instances of reported speech, attribute them to their speaker, and to identify which instances provide evidence of an opinion. We first focus on extracting reported speech, which involves finding all acts of communication that are reported in an article. Previous work has approached this task with rule-based methods, however there are several factors that confound these approaches. To demonstrate this, we build a corpus of 965 news articles, where we mark all instances of speech. We then show that a supervised token-based approach outperforms all of our rule-based alternatives, even in extracting direct quotes. Next, we examine the problem of finding the speaker of each quote. For this task we annotate the same 965 news articles with links from each quote to its speaker. Using this, and three other corpora, we develop new methods and features for quote attribution, which achieve state-of-the-art accuracy on our corpus and strong results on the others. Having extracted quotes and determined who spoke them, we move on to the opinion mining part of our work. Most of the task definitions in opinion mining do not easily work with opinions in news, so we define a new task, where the aim is to classify whether quotes demonstrate support, neutrality, or opposition to a given position statement. This formulation improved annotator agreement when compared to our earlier annotation schemes. Using this we build an opinion corpus of 700 news documents covering 7 topics. In this thesis we do not attempt this full task, but we do present preliminary results

    Metric Selection and Metric Learning for Matching Tasks

    A quarter of a century after the world-wide web was born, we have grown accustomed to having easy access to a wealth of data sets and open-source software. The value of these resources is restricted if they are not properly integrated and maintained. A lot of this work boils down to matching; finding existing records about entities and enriching them with information from a new data source. In the realm of code this means integrating new code snippets into a code base while avoiding duplication. In this thesis, we address two different such matching problems. First, we leverage the diverse and mature set of string similarity measures in an iterative semisupervised learning approach to string matching. It is designed to query a user to make a sequence of decisions on specific cases of string matching. We show that we can find almost optimal solutions after only a small amount of such input. The low labelling complexity of our algorithm is due to addressing the cold start problem that is inherent to Active Learning; by ranking queries by variance before the arrival of enough supervision information, and by a self-regulating mechanism that counteracts initial biases. Second, we address the matching of code fragments for deduplication. Programming code is not only a tool, but also a resource that itself demands maintenance. Code duplication is a frequent problem arising especially from modern development practice. There are many reasons to detect and address code duplicates, for example to keep a clean and maintainable codebase. In such more complex data structures, string similarity measures are inadequate. In their stead, we study a modern supervised Metric Learning approach to model code similarity with Neural Networks. We find that in such a model representing the elementary tokens with a pretrained word embedding is the most important ingredient. Our results show both qualitatively (by visualization) that relatedness is modelled well by the embeddings and quantitatively (by ablation) that the encoded information is useful for the downstream matching task. As a non-technical contribution, we unify the common challenges arising in supervised learning approaches to Record Matching, Code Clone Detection and generic Metric Learning tasks. We give a novel account to string similarity measures from a psychological standpoint and point out and document one longstanding naming conflict in string similarity measures. Finally, we point out the overlap of latest research in Code Clone Detection with the field of Natural Language Processing

    A Four Layer Bayesian Network for Product Model Based Information Mining

    Business and engineering knowledge in AEC/FM is captured mainly implicitly in project and corporate document repositories. Even with the increasing integration of model-based systems with project information spaces, a large percentage of the information exchange will further on rely on isolated and rather poorly structured text documents. In this paper we propose an approach enabling the use of product model data as a primary source of engineering knowledge to support information externalisation from relevant construction documents, to provide for domain-specific information retrieval, and to help in re-organising and re-contextualising documents in accordance to the user’s discipline-specific tasks and information needs. Suggested is a retrieval and mining framework combining methods for analysing text documents, filtering product models and reasoning on Bayesian networks to explicitly represent the content of text repositories in personalisable semantic content networks. We describe the proposed basic network that can be realised on short-term using minimal product model information as well as various extensions towards a full-fledged added value integration of document-based and model-based information
