Continuous maintenance and the future – Foundations and technological challenges

    Get PDF
High value and long life products require continuous maintenance throughout their life cycle to achieve required performance with optimum through-life cost. This paper presents foundations and technologies required to offer the maintenance service. Component and system level degradation science, assessment and modelling along with life cycle ‘big data’ analytics are the two most important knowledge and skill base required for the continuous maintenance. Advanced computing and visualisation technologies will improve efficiency of the maintenance and reduce through-life cost of the product. Future of continuous maintenance within the Industry 4.0 context also identifies the role of IoT, standards and cyber security

Augmented Reality Environments in Learning, Communicational and Professional Contexts in Higher Education

This paper explores educational and professional uses of augmented learning environment concerned with issues of training and entertainment. We analyze the state-of-art research of some scenarios based on augmented reality. Some examples for the purpose of education and simulation are described. These applications show that augmented reality can be means of enhancing, motivating and stimulating learners’ understanding of certain events, especially those for which the traditional notion of instructional learning have proven inappropriate or difficult. Furthermore, the students can learn in a quick mode by interacting on the augmented environments

Currently, laptops have become a necessity to most of the people as laptop provides mobility and helps in doing the task that a normal desktop PC can do.However, the malfunction of the laptop hardware will distract the user work and decrease the productivity.By utilizing Augmented Reality (AR) that combine real world and virtual world, a laptop maintenance application can be made in reality. The objective of this paper is to discuss on how to develop Mobile Augmented Reality for Laptop Maintenance (MAR4LM) applications. This AR application specifically develop for smart phones based on the android platform. Therefore, this study presents a way to understand and discuss the process of using this new technology on the android platforms. This application has been proven in increasing the understanding of the users about their laptop and doing maintenance on their own self.In addition, laptop maintenance tasks will become straightforward, easy to use, interactive, and easily available anywhere and anytime

Machining and Dimensional Validation Training Using Augmented Reality for a Lean Process

AbstractQuality control does not concern only to a finished product, nowadays measuring technologies control all the fabrication process in an active way. If product quality does not meet the customer specifications exists the risk of even lose projects. When multiple or complex operations are required in the fabrication process of a part and its dimensional validation is primordial and also happens that the operator has doubts about which step to follow or that the expert supervisor is not at the workshop for some reason, that is why comes the opportunity of implementing Augmented Reality (A.R.) technology in education and in a lean manufacturing process, as support for technician operators of machine-tools and coordinate-measuring machines, with the objective of helping the technician to perform, in a proper and timely manner, the step sequence of the process. It was proved that having A.R. as ally in the technician's education, the mistakes and time required to fulfill the machining and dimensioning of a part can be considerably reduced, as well as eliminate operator's dependency to the experts. At the end of the implementation, savings were found in the three stages analyzed, generating 27.36% savings in lathe process, 26.54% in milling and 45.16% in dimensional validation

A Scoping Review on Virtual Reality-Based Industrial Training

The fourth industrial revolution has forced most companies to technologically evolve, applying new digital tools, so that their workers can have the necessary skills to face changing work environments. This article presents a scoping review of the literature on virtual reality-based training systems. The methodology consisted of four steps, which pose research questions, document search, paper selection, and data extraction. From a total of 350 peer-reviewed database articles, such as SpringerLink, IEEEXplore, MDPI, Scopus, and ACM, 44 were eventually chosen, mostly using the virtual reality haptic glasses and controls from Oculus Rift and HTC VIVE. It was concluded that, among the advantages of using this digital tool in the industry, is the commitment, speed, measurability, preservation of the integrity of the workers, customization, and cost reduction. Even though several research gaps were found, virtual reality is presented as a present and future alternative for the efficient training of human resources in the industrial field. This work was supported by Instituto Superior Tecnológico Victoria Vásconez Cuvi. Benefits and Challenges of Integrating IoT, VR & AR in the BIM-based Facility Management Process: Literature and Case-based Analysis

    Get PDF
With the emerging technologies of the fourth industrial revolution (4th IR), there are more possibilities to enhance the facility management (FM). Despite the increasing tendencies to integrate new technologies in the process of FM, its potentials in enhancing the BIM-based FM decision making process is not yet totally explored and its application is facing many challenges that should be considered. This paper aims to explore the benefits and challenges of integrating the Internet of Things (IoT), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in the Facility Management (FM) process to enhance the decision making; and to conclude a framework for integrating of such technologies in the BIM-based FM Process. The paper adopted a descriptive methodology through a comprehensive literature and case-based review to achieve its objectives. The conclusion shows that integrating the IoT, VR & AR in the FM process and handling its related challenges from the early stages could greatly enhance and support the FM team and the FM related parties in making quick, accurate and effective decisions, saving energy & cost and optimizing the use of resources
