Celem pracy jest zbadanie kolektywnego wymiaru zjawiska głuchoty, zaś jej przedmiotem jest analiza zjawiska głuchoty w perspektywie antropologii zaangażowanej. Wskazany powyżej cel implikuje tezę badawczą tej pracy, którą sformułować można w sposób następujący: zjawisko głuchoty ma swój wymiar zarówno indywidualny, jak i kolektywny. Oznacza to, że głuchotę można rozumieć zarówno jako sytuację1, w jakiej znajduje się pojedyncza osoba, jak i jako sytuację, która powstaje w związku z relacjami nawiązywanymi w obrębie grupy osób. Nie przyjmuję jednak a priori powszechnego w obrębie deaf studies rozróżnienia między tym, co medyczne i kulturowe czy szerzej, biologiczne i kulturowe. Przeciwnie, uważam, że obie te perspektywy należy uwzględnić równolegle. After three years in Ihmilton we have an opportunity to look back on the past and share some of the memories with you. Our year in grade nine is probably the most memorable for many of us. Many great things have happened this year. In sports, the Stampeders finally reached the play-offs after 13 years of losing. In fact, they came in second in the minor football league. In volleyball, the senior boys came in first place and the girls, well, better luck next year. Basketball was also a good season for us. The boys captured second while the girls, well, better luck next year. But this year was not all fun and games. It was also a year for learning. We learned the responsibilities involved with leadership, and being leaders in the school. We also tried to show as much enthu­siasm as possible. This came in the way of school spirit. We have also learned many other things which we're sure will be an asset in the future. One of the things that has made our three school years here so enjoyable, is the teachers. Some teachers have shown us wisdom, while others have cried to get us to show responsibility, and yet others have even tried to show us how to be comedians. (Right, Mr. Steen) But, do you remember the time when we didn't even know who the teachers were? That was at the beginning of grade seven. That was a challenging year because we were introduced to homework, essays and, of course, final exams. But, when it was all over I think most of us were looking forward to Grade 8. Grade eight was a whole different year for us. We were not leaders but, still we were not the youngest either. I think that year all of us matured. (Well, most of us.) We felt more comfortable with the school because we knew more about it and understood lamilton better. We hope that now you will understand why it will be hard for us to leave Hamilton. A lot of us did a lot of growing up here and it has become a part of our lives. We'd just like to say thanks, Ihmilton, it's been three terrific years!V A L ED IC TO R Y Well, we've finally reached graduation and when next week comes to an end, we must bid farewell to Hamilton and a small part of our lives.- To Hamilton, we have lost our youth and have discovered new identities and ideals. But, what is Ibmilton? Hamilton is not just a school. It is much more. It has grown as we have, taken on a new shape and identity as new faces came and old ones left. Hamilton has become part of the foundation in our lives, providing us with stability and roots to grow from. Still we have much more than just mathematical formulas and history.
