Sparse Modeling for Image and Vision Processing
In recent years, a large amount of multi-disciplinary research has been
conducted on sparse models and their applications. In statistics and machine
learning, the sparsity principle is used to perform model selection---that is,
automatically selecting a simple model among a large collection of them. In
signal processing, sparse coding consists of representing data with linear
combinations of a few dictionary elements. Subsequently, the corresponding
tools have been widely adopted by several scientific communities such as
neuroscience, bioinformatics, or computer vision. The goal of this monograph is
to offer a self-contained view of sparse modeling for visual recognition and
image processing. More specifically, we focus on applications where the
dictionary is learned and adapted to data, yielding a compact representation
that has been successful in various contexts.Comment: 205 pages, to appear in Foundations and Trends in Computer Graphics

Sparse Representation-Based Framework for Preprocessing Brain MRI
This thesis addresses the use of sparse representations, specifically Dictionary Learning and Sparse Coding, for pre-processing brain MRI, so that the processed image retains the fine details of the original image, to improve the segmentation of brain structures, to assess whether there is any relationship between alterations in brain structures and the behavior of young offenders. Denoising an MRI while keeping fine details is a difficult task; however, the proposed method, based on sparse representations, NLM, and SVD can filter noise while prevents blurring, artifacts, and residual noise. Segmenting an MRI is a non-trivial task; because normally the limits between regions in these images may be neither clear nor well defined, due to the problems which affect MRI. However, this method, from both the label matrix of the segmented MRI and the original image, yields a new improved label matrix in which improves the limits among regions.DoctoradoDoctor en IngenierĂa de Sistemas y ComputaciĂł
Deep learning methods for solving linear inverse problems: Research directions and paradigms
The linear inverse problem is fundamental to the development of various scientific areas. Innumerable attempts have been carried out to solve different variants of the linear inverse problem in different applications. Nowadays, the rapid development of deep learning provides a fresh perspective for solving the linear inverse problem, which has various well-designed network architectures results in state-of-the-art performance in many applications. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the recent progress in the development of deep learning for solving various linear inverse problems. We review how deep learning methods are used in solving different linear inverse problems, and explore the structured neural network architectures that incorporate knowledge used in traditional methods. Furthermore, we identify open challenges and potential future directions along this research line
Structural Similarity based Anatomical and Functional Brain Imaging Fusion
Multimodal medical image fusion helps in combining contrasting features from
two or more input imaging modalities to represent fused information in a single
image. One of the pivotal clinical applications of medical image fusion is the
merging of anatomical and functional modalities for fast diagnosis of malignant
tissues. In this paper, we present a novel end-to-end unsupervised
learning-based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for fusing the high and low
frequency components of MRI-PET grayscale image pairs, publicly available at
ADNI, by exploiting Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) as the loss function
during training. We then apply color coding for the visualization of the fused
image by quantifying the contribution of each input image in terms of the
partial derivatives of the fused image. We find that our fusion and
visualization approach results in better visual perception of the fused image,
while also comparing favorably to previous methods when applying various
quantitative assessment metrics.Comment: Accepted at MICCAI-MBIA 201
Underwater image restoration: super-resolution and deblurring via sparse representation and denoising by means of marine snow removal
Underwater imaging has been widely used as a tool in many fields, however, a major issue is the quality of the resulting images/videos. Due to the light's interaction with water and its constituents, the acquired underwater images/videos often suffer from a significant amount of scatter (blur, haze) and noise. In the light of these issues, this thesis considers problems of low-resolution, blurred and noisy underwater images and proposes several approaches to improve the quality of such images/video frames.
Quantitative and qualitative experiments validate the success of proposed algorithms
